Love how they established that Jedi have super speed in this scene, and then no one ever used it again.

Padmé was one of the best characters in Attack of the Clones. Watching her, it’s easy to see the qualities that would later define both Luke and Leia. She also outlasted almost 200 Jedi in the Petranaki Arena. Not bad for a Senator.

Star Wars pioneered so many special effects that we take for granted today. When filming the destruction of Alderaan in Star Wars, the effects team at Industrial Light & Magic used a surprisingly simple practical effect. The planet was a painted sphere suspended in front of a black backdrop. To create the explosion, they rigged the miniature with pyrotechnics and filmed it with high-speed cameras at a faster frame rate so the blast would appear massive and cinematic when slowed down. One interesting detail is that the explosion was partially achieved using gasoline and powdered cement. The cement gave the blast a heavier, planetary look rather than a quick fireball. Because the miniature exploded outward so quickly, the slowed footage helped sell the illusion of an entire planet tearing apart in space. The shot lasts only a few seconds in the final film but became one of the most iconic visual effects moments in cinema history, created years before CGI existed. (Original 1977 footage)

A year ago, Andor completed its final act. Some of the best acting in Star Wars shows happened in these three episodes. In the interrogation scene, Krennic placing his finger on Dedra’s head wasn’t in the Andor S2 script. Ben Mendelsohn improvised it.

Harrison Ford deliberately didn’t memorise Han Solo’s lines for the Death Star intercom conversation in Star Wars. He wanted Han’s frantic excuses to sound genuinely improvised and desperate, helping create one of the film’s funniest and most memorable moments.

According to Mark Hamill, the final scene of The Empire Strikes Back wasn’t filmed during principal photography. It was shot four months later as an additional scene after George Lucas worried the film’s ending was too bleak. With the heroes defeated and Han Solo gone, they wanted to leave audiences with one final moment of hope before the credits rolled.

George Lucas deliberately opened The Empire Strikes Back with the Battle of Hoth because he didn’t want the visual effects to be easy. In space, the black background could hide matte lines, blue-screen artifacts, and compositing flaws. But on a bright white snow-covered planet, every shadow and mismatch in lighting stood out, leaving ILM nowhere to hide mistakes. Lucas wanted to push the effects team to achieve a level of realism that simply wasn’t possible by taking the easy route. The results became some of the most impressive effects ever put on film, and the Battle of Hoth remains one of the most legendary scenes in all of Star Wars.

12-year-old me: “This guy cut off Anakin's hand, he’s evil!” 30-year-old me: “You know, there is great validity in what he says.” Also, it’s funny that Dooku literally told Obi-Wan everything here; the Jedi were just too arrogant to listen.

John Williams’ score for Star Wars: A New Hope is ranked #1 on the American Film Institute’s “100 Years of Film Scores” list, recognising the 25 greatest American film scores. That opening fanfare alone still gives me goosebumps. What’s your favourite piece of music from Star Wars?

If you look closely at Jango Fett before he is killed by Mace Windu, you can see him trying to start his jetpack, which malfunctions, adding to his downfall. The sparks were not there in the theatrical version. George Lucas added them for the DVD release.

It’s probably a good thing this was deleted from The Empire Strikes Back 😂 During the evacuation of Echo Base, this Snowtrooper unknowingly opens a door the Rebels had marked as dangerous, only to be immediately grabbed by the Wampa trapped inside. It’s such a weirdly slapstick moment in the middle of one of the most intense sequences in Star Wars. You can definitely see why they decided it didn’t fit the final cut.

While exploring the Lucasfilm archives for Rogue One, Gareth Edwards discovered cans of original Star Wars footage that had never been fully digitised. Among them were unused 1977 shots of Red Leader and Gold Leader. ILM restored the footage and placed the pilots into the Battle of Scarif nearly 40 years later.
