Star Wars pioneered so many special effects that we take for granted today. When filming the destruction of Alderaan in Star Wars, the effects team at Industrial Light & Magic used a surprisingly simple practical effect. The planet was a painted sphere suspended in front of a black backdrop. To create the explosion, they rigged the miniature with pyrotechnics and filmed it with high-speed cameras at a faster frame rate so the blast would appear massive and cinematic when slowed down. One interesting detail is that the explosion was partially achieved using gasoline and powdered cement. The cement gave the blast a heavier, planetary look rather than a quick fireball. Because the miniature exploded outward so quickly, the slowed footage helped sell the illusion of an entire planet tearing apart in space. The shot lasts only a few seconds in the final film but became one of the most iconic visual effects moments in cinema history, created years before CGI existed. (Original 1977 footage)

One of the biggest changes George Lucas made to Star Wars was silencing R2-D2. In the earliest script drafts, R2 spoke fluent English, and he had a notoriously foul mouth. Although his dialogue was removed before filming, many of C-3PO’s horrified reactions were left in, meaning R2 is probably still insulting him… we just hear beeps instead.

Sir Christopher Lee didn’t hesitate when George Lucas offered him the role of Count Dooku. As Lee wrote in his autobiography: “You do not turn down Star Wars unless you’re Harrison Ford and have already done three…” He loved the experience too, calling George Lucas one of the easiest directors he’d ever worked with and saying he “could talk the stars down.”

Knowing they had failed on Geonosis, they open the duel with basic attacks from Ataru and Shien, forms that Dooku’s Makashi easily dismantles. This convinces Dooku that he’s facing the same Jedi he defeated three years earlier. Then they switch. Obi-Wan returns to his impenetrable Soresu, while Anakin unleashes the refined Djem So he mastered during the Clone Wars. Dooku suddenly realizes the opening exchange was a ruse and that Anakin had surpassed power levels he thought were possible.
