My first day at Nickelodeon Animation they put me in a conference room and handed me a VHS tape. They said “watch this, it’s our next series” That video was “Help Wanted” I remember laughing out loud when I watched it Today is the anniversary of the premiere of that pilot in 1999

Today marks the 26th anniversary of the opening of CARTOON NETWORK STUDIOS (2000). We didn’t realize at the time what the future held, but we knew we were going to break the traditional studio model and forge our own path - and we did. Here’s a CN spot from our opening year…

MAY THE 4TH — Clone Wars was one of the very, very few times the studio produced a program based on an existing IP. but it was a BIG IP - so how could we say no. Besides, Lucas personally wanted Genndy for this and the results show why. It was also the first ever “micro-series”…

True story! In the season 2 episode “Dexter and Computress Get Mandark!" (1998) Genndy received an audio cassette of a young man telling his own DEXTER episode idea. Genndy loved the imaginative charm and we used it as the track for this episode in a childlike design style.

We didn’t produce EEE at the studio, but this spot from 1999 is a good example of how different the marketing was on CN vs NICK. Nothing about this screams KIDS as Nick did. Also, this spot actually aired on Nick as ad buy from CN. There was a time when we’d advertise on Nick and they’d do the same on CN. it could be done through local ad buys. Also, you have to love the focus on the animation through these incredible walk cycles.

By the time I arrived as head of production for Nickelodeon, ANGRY BEAVERS (1997) had already premiered. I will say, despite the tension between the production team and the network, the show was one of the best quality series coming out of the studio. From a technical side, it was a wonder to behold. Some of which you can see in this main title.

Yet another incredible PPG spot from 1999. Just making interesting stuff to get people’s attention- and it did. That was the same approach to the programs - do things that bring people in. We couldn’t follow, we had to lead. No one was doing this stuff. No one else could take these risks.

OVER THE GARDEN WALL premiered 10 years ago today. Here’s the original promo. At that time there was a negotiation going on with a cable provider that actually prevented the series from being seen in many homes. It took another month before it was widely broadcast. Also, here’s a piece of original art by Nick Cross art director for the series. This piece was part of an OTGW art show we did at the studio 10 years ago…

30 Years ago we wrapped production on the Saturday morning version of SONIC at DIC. It was such a unique time to be producing both a syndicated and network version of the same series in very different styles. Here’s the main title of the Saturday morning version. If I recall correctly, the cost of this main title was likely 5X the cost per minute of the series animation. That was traditionally the case.
