Thomas Hearns spent most of the eighties chasing a rematch with Sugar Ray Leonard and it’s cruel that he was denied the victory he craved. Yet their second fight – at Las Vegas’ Caesars Palace in 1989 – was a two-way thriller and not quite the outrageous robbery that some now label it. Indisputable, though, was Hearns’ excellent performance. Coming into the bout after an unimpressive display against James Kinchen and, on fight day, hearing the news that his younger brother had been charged with murder, the “Hit Man” went about business like a man possessed. He scored two knockdowns, in rounds three and 11, and survived under severe Leonard pressure in the fifth and 12th. The crowd chanted “Bulls**t” after the result – a draw – was announced. The day before the fight, Hearns accused Leonard of using steroids. The claims were laughed off by Sugar Ray and his team. At the time, the Nevada State Athletic Commission tested both fighters for ‘other drugs’ but did not test for PED use.

Augustus' unorthodox style made him far better than his 22-16-4 record suggested at the time. 'Pretty Boy', despite winning inside the distance, was full of respect for the Chicago native. "I'm going to rate Emanuel Augustus first compared to all the guys that I've faced," Mayweather said in 2012 on a conference call with various reporters. "He didn't have the best record in the sport of boxing, he has never won a world title, but he came to fight."
