We looked back at the Romney vs. Obama and Bush vs. Gore presidential debates... Sometimes, when we share content reflecting on more respectful political moments, we're seen as naive, or engaging in trivial "kumbaya" messaging or tone policing. But insults and dehumanizing language aren’t just words. They’re symptoms — and contributors — to more dangerous outcomes. Jim Taylor wrote this piece in 2009 about how, as he saw it, “civility was dead.” (again, 2009!): “Civility is about something far more important than how people comport themselves with others. Rather, civility is an expression of a fundamental understanding and respect for the laws, rules, and norms (written and implicit) that guide its citizens in understanding what is acceptable and unacceptable behavior… For a society to function, people must be willing to accept those strictures. Though still in the distance, the loss of civility is a step toward anarchy, where anything goes; you can say or do anything, regardless of their consequences.” And we’d add that insults and threats are often used to stoke fear and anger across the political spectrum, which can ultimately lead to restrictions on freedoms and unconstitutional actions. The words we choose matter more than we realize. They’re powerful tools that can either promote healthier, more constructive engagement — or erode the very norms that hold us together.

Just as exhausting is the gridlock among the leaders we’ve elected, and the absence of real solutions to improve our society. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Depolarization once felt impossible. But our community members—and the way they’re showing up in their families, workplaces, and neighborhoods—prove it’s not. We see Builders every day expanding their mindsets, finding common ground, and modeling what’s possible. We see the demand for honest conversations, shared purpose, and creative solutions. We’re building a new culture—one rooted in curiosity, courage, compassion, and creativity. This isn’t just a moment. It’s a movement. Join us.

“Why I, as a Black man, attend KKK rallies.” Before you comment, no, we’re not suggesting you befriend a KKK member. Daryl Davis's work is an extreme example of the power of conversation, but the message behind it rings true for all of us. For over 40 years, he has been sitting down with white supremacists to have conversations that some might say are impossible. These conversations are based on five core values: love, respect, the need to be heard, fairness, and truthfulness. What Daryl has done is clearly not easy; it’s something few of us have the strength, ability, or motivation to do. But his work serves as an example of how, when we are able to transcend hate and anger, we can accomplish things that many see as miraculous. Daryl has shown us that dialogue, even with those whose views are repugnant and dangerous, is where real change happens. Daryl’s work teaches us that change doesn’t come from fighting; it comes from the courage to sit down, listen, and speak with respect. What would happen if we all tried a little more of that?
