The privilege of believing that you don’t need to prepare. Not me. By the time I arrive I’ve researched the topics and every person on the panel. I feel strongly about this: journalists have an ethical responsibility to call these election lies what they are. We just stop hiding behind the euphemistic “without proof.” Or democracy is fragile and under assault. Patrician journalistic niceties serve no one is a moment of crisis, not even journalism. We are called to reveal and convey truth. It starts with every interaction. It starts in the moment. It starts to their faces. It feels good to be free to do what I think is right.

Destigmatizing queerness does not lead to gay conversion or recruitment. That is a scare tactic. It actually leads to more honesty, more safety and better health, for individuals and community. No straight person can be recruited into queerness any more than a gay one can become straight. What can happen is that people who have felt pressured and afraid can emerge into their truth, which we should all encourage. Be yourselves people. Be brave. These people are shameless. They will say something one minute and deny they said it the next. If you are not well-researched, an attentive listener and grounded in your own convictions, they will have you doubting reality and thinking you’re losing your mind. This woman clearly “recommended” more force against Iran if negotiations don’t pan out, threatening to “crush them,” then turned on a dime and said that she was not making a recommendation.
