The order interdicts the City from demolishing or interfering with structures on the property, and from preventing access to it, pending a hearing set down for 10h00 on 16 July. The City will be in court and will respect the legal process, as we always do. Our broader work to restore a safe, dignified and lawful inner city for the people of Johannesburg continues. The video below shows one of the many shops that was operating despite a court order stating it should not, using illegal structures. #RebuildingJoburg #InnerCityReclamation

Let me set the record straight. ActionSA did not leave the coalition because Joburg was failing. They left because they demanded 2 MMC positions and wanted me to remove an EFF MMC to make room for them. I said no. Those MMCs are performing, and I will not remove people who are delivering for residents to satisfy anyone's appetite for positions. As the ANC, we will carry on with what we committed to. We will turn this city around, and we are asking for the mandate to finish the job.

During the operation, it was found that Lakewood Hotel owes more than R19 million in electricity bills, and several property encroachments were also uncovered. Initially, city officials faced some resistance upon arriving in Ormonde but managed to gain access and carry out inspections. Further investigations uncovered a water bypass, an electricity bypass, and the lack of approved building plans. The City now plans to move forward with a forensic audit of the property.

Yesterday, we removed illegal structures attached to a church building in Small Street during our by-law enforcement operation. Today, we returned to investigate what was happening inside the building and discovered that shops were operating from the church basement. This demonstrates the level of lawlessness and illegal occupation taking place in parts of our inner city. We will continue to act decisively to enforce by-laws, restore order, and reclaim Johannesburg precinct by precinct. No space in our city can be allowed to operate outside the law.
