The original Street Fighter (Capcom, 1987) is historically important and marks the chronological beginning of the franchise's lore. But it's famously clunky and very difficult, and not talked about. It ends at this fight between Ryu and Sagat.👊 ⚠️SPOILERS for 2026 movie follows: Street Fighter 1 arcade game concluded with Ryu defeating Sagat, with the Shoryuken leaving a scar on Sagat's torso. The movie begins with a flashback to 1987, in great 2D hand-drawn animation, showing that event in a serious tone. If you know a bit of Street Fighter lore, it wins you over right there. Live action campiness apart, it'd be a waste to not have more of that animation style telling key parts of the SF lore in the future.

The hype for Street Fighter II on the Super Nintendo/Super Famicom in 1992 was unlike anything the gaming industry had seen before. The "impossible" port: before July 1992, playing a major arcade hit at home usually meant a compromised, stripped-down home port. When Street Fighter II: The World Warrior was announced for the SNES, the idea that an arcade game of that scope could run at home felt like witchcraft. Magazines like EGM built massive anticipation with cover features and deep dives into the 16-megabit cartridge, the largest and most powerful SNES cartridge of its time. Costing US$79.99 at launch (roughly US$175 adjusted for inflation), but millions of players didn't hesitate to pay for it. In fact, it sold over 6.3 million copies on the SNES, becoming Capcom's best-selling single software title for decades and a massive system-seller that convinced many people on my surroundings to buy a Super Nintendo. Sega had no answer to that until September 1993, which was too late for many.

Super Street Fighter II: The New Challengers for arcade (Capcom/1993). The fourth major arcade release in the Street Fighter II sub-series, it introduces Cammy White, also known by the codename Killer Bee, alongside Dee Jay, Fei Long, and T. Hawk, bringing the total roster to 16 characters. Introducing combo, reversal scoring system and new game modes such as Group Battle and Time Challenge, it was well received for its technical leap on Capcom's new CPS-2 hardware, but criticized by competitive players due to its slower pace compared to its predecessor, Street Fighter II: Hyper Fighting.

🎃 Night Slashers for arcade (Data East/1993). Great horror-themed scrolling beat 'em up. Features most of the horror genre tropes and monsters (zombies, mummy, vampire, etc.). Had re-releases/digital ports (some are already delisted) as well as Night Slashers: Remake (by Storm Trident/Forever Entertainment/2024) for the main modern platforms.

Mitsume ga Tōru (The Three-Eyed One) for Famicom (Natsume/Tomy/1992). One of the best action-platformers on the system, making great use of its 8-bit hardware. Featuring responsive Mega Man-style controls, it is based on Osamu Tezuka's classic manga and anime. Hidden gem material.

Alone in the Dark (Infogrames/1992) for MS-DOS PC is widely considered a cult classic and the true father of 3D survival horror, establishing the formula of fixed camera angles and resource management. Pioneered 3D character on pre-rendered backgrounds, influencing Resident Evil, and is praised for its atmospheric Lovecraftian horror and inventive puzzle-solving.

Agartha for the Sega Dreamcast (around 2001/unreleased). It was being developed by No Cliché, the studio founded by Alone in the Dark creator Frédérick Raynal. Planned as a huge survival-horror game, with a planned release around 2001. Then Sega killed the Dreamcast, and all that was left was prototypes and this E3 demo.

Jimmy White's Whirlwind Snooker for the Amiga (1991). Classic snooker simulation designed by the late Archer Maclean and published by Virgin Games. With realistic physics, it accurately calculates ball movement, bounces, and spin. Also remarkably smooth on any hardware - this is recorded through UAE but I remember it being nice and smooth on the Amiga 500 back then.

Nostradamus for arcade (Face/1993). Vertically scrolling arcade shoot-'em-up loosely based on the prophecy of a great leader coming from the sky in July 1999. Overshadowed by classics like Raiden and Aero fighters, still a cult-classic and an underrated gem for fans of vertical shooters. Arcade exclusive, no home ports or modern re-releases as far as I know.

Michael Jackson's Moonwalker for the arcade (Sega/1990). Isometric action game where players control Michael Jackson using magic beam attacks and signature dance moves to defeat enemies. Has charge shot and a clear screen bomb where enemies dance before dying. With great renditions of MJ's music. Mega Drive and Master System home versions are completely different/another game.

Dark Seal (released as Gate of Doom in the West) is a 1990 isometric fantasy arcade action RPG by Data East that plays like a mix of Gauntlet and Diablo. It gained a cult following among fans of isometric, fantasy-themed games. Because of its moderate popularity, Data East eventually produced a sequel in 1992 named Dark Seal II (localized as Wizard Fire), and the original game has since seen modern digital re-releases on platforms like the Nintendo Switch and PC via Ziggurat Interactive

Alien vs. Predator (Capcom/1994) was a major arcade success, both commercially and critically. It's widely celebrated as one of the greatest beat-'em-ups of all time. Despite its massive success, licensing complexities kept it trapped in arcades for decades. Fun fact: Lt. Linn Kurosawa was referenced or made cameos in Street Fighter games.

Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon (Banpresto/Gazelle/1995). Surprisingly fun and well-made beat 'em up based on the manga and anime series. 1st game by Gazelle, formed by ex-Toaplan staff. The series creator supervised the game, and the original anime voice actors provided the character voices.

With impressive features for the time, such as day/night cycle, weather effects (snow and fog), and the loud roar of the engine matching its speed, it was considered the most advanced racer on the console.

🦇Castlevania 40th anniversary: Vampire Killer for the MSX2 (Konami/1986). In Japan, it shares the same name with the 1st Famicom title in the franchise (Akumajō Dracula). It's a exploratory/non-linear take on the original Castlevania, even considered a precursor to the Metroidvania genre, as you go back and forth looking for keys to open doors, among other things. Hardcore MSX enthusiasts argue that this game is superior/deeper than Castlevania/NES, despite being flip-screen. The SCC music mod is amazing (arranged by Jan van Valburg).
