Bunting for a hit is extremely valuable. It’s a weapon. I’ve always believed that players who can consistently bunt for hits can raise their batting average by 50–100 points over the course of a season, get on base more, and score more runs. Here, I share the purpose and techniques behind the push bunt (one of the easiest to execute if you know how to do it the right way). #DoingDirtWork

Every player on the planet needs to hear this — over and over again: Remove all the “stuff” — results, expectations, distractions — and just compete. Compete. Compete. Compete. At the end of the day, it all comes down to becoming the ultimate competitor. Breathe. Center your thoughts. Lay it on the line and compete.

Controlled aggression and purpose behind every swing. Don’t just push the ball around the field. But don’t swing max effort trying to hit pull-side home runs every round of BP either. MLB hitters are the strongest and most physical players in the game. They could launch balls out all day if they wanted to. Yet the great ones understand that batting practice is about building a swing that performs in games. Watch hitters like Miguel Cabrera. Sure, they hit some out, but they aren’t constantly hooking and top-spinning balls to the pull side. They’re hunting backspin and driving the baseball with authority. Controlled aggression and driving the ball to the opposite-field gap helps hitters stay on fastballs to all fields, avoid pulling off, and buy time to adjust to off-speed pitches and breaking balls. Many amateur hitters struggle with both because they train their swing to look good in BP, not perform in games. They become one-dimensional. Be a mature hitter. Train for game performance, not batting practice applause.

“The Ozzie Drill.” Back in 1998, I watched an ESPN interview with Ozzie Smith where he talked about one of his favorite drills — one he used to “improve, polish, and trust his glove instincts.” In the drill, Ozzie got on his knees while a coach peppered him from short distance. The goal was to let the hands work freely to pick or press short hops and in-between hops. No thinking. Just react and trust. Because thinking is slow. I stayed up at night trying to figure out how to adapt this drill for a full group of infielders. One night, I woke up out of a dead sleep with the answer — a way to make the drill simple, repeatable, and predictable for teaching purposes. Once players mastered the foundation, we could expand the drill, make it unpredictable, and challenge instincts at a much higher level. -Trent Mongero

Winning baseball. Check the box ✅ A guy with 23 home runs and 73 RBI lays down a safety squeeze in the College World Series to score a huge run. That’s winning baseball. How many tools are in your toolbox? How many different ways can you impact the game and hurt the opponent? Or are you one-dimensional? Or worse… selfish? “I don’t bunt, I hit bombs.” Championship teams and championship players can do it all. Team-first mentality. Beautiful. Refreshing.

A couple keys on the *press* glove action when dealing with the extremely tough short in between hop that often eats infielders up… Dirt Bro instructor, Taber Mongero, explains the common flaw of wasted time/space when using the press glove action, and how it should be eliminated. Following this explanation, you can see Taber execute the press glove action at game speed on a play where it was extremely necessary. The reason why he is using the press glove action on this play is to turn a tricky short in between hop into a much more manageable short hop by pressing forward through the ball before bringing the ball back to his mid line center line and throwing to first for the out. #DoingDirtWork
