For all the players (at all ages) that spend their entire batting practice “hooking and pulling” everything… Take a look at the video and then listen carefully to Adam Wainwright Adam Wainwright talk about Castellanos’ approach in BP today… hint… not one pitch pulled… everything backside (oppo). Batting practice is a chance to work your swing and focus on “in game approach.” Wish more young players could learn this and work to apply. Become a complete hitter. Why do we start BP in the opposite field gap? 👀 It allows the ball to travel deeper, helping us maintain connection and direction in our swing. As the game speeds up, if we start out by pulling the ball, we’ll likely end up WAY out front come game time—leading to poor connection and bad direction to the ball. #baseball #baseballlife #BP #gametime #onfield #hitting #batting #coaching

While many of these players are outliers and anomalies in the game (size wise for sure) We can attempt to train THIS and accomplish this This is what we call bat to ball skills and feel - Skinny bats. - Setting up environments to hit balls that we normally wouldn’t. - Being okay with making it feel / look ugly - Quickness (Hit Coach BP and machine more often) Juan Soto controls the zone the BEST in the MLB, most other great hitters are in the middle of the ranking. They believe they can hit everything. They are aggressive. Do we want to control the zone? Yes. But we also want to be the enforcer and aggressor a little bit too. Many times when hitters control the zone too much, they get passive and cautious Coaches would much rather you be a little aggressive rather than a little passive. A great coach told me when he’s training youth players, he takes away the plate and anything between the batters box lines are a GREEN LIGHT. YES YES YES

How the best players really train! Pete Alonso Off Season Cage Work @ Diesel Fitness in Tampa. The best players have specific drills and routines they do when they step in the cage. They don’t just hop in and go right off of live batting practice or machine. They do drills that they know will groom there swing to have success in the game against the highest levels of pitching. I’ve never seen a professional player without some sort of a routine in baseball.

Don Mattingly explaining to practice being short & quick in practice with the focus of hitting line drives opposed to trying to lift & launch in batting practice. If you are hitting low line drives with back spin in practice consistently off of 60 MPH when you take that same swing off of 90+ MPH & just miss slightly below / clip the bottom half. Those turn into Doubles & Home Runs. But when you try and lift off of batting practice & lift in the game. That is when you find tons of swing & miss as well as top spin ground balls.

Yes, but majority of hitters shouldn't be training their swing to be a negative attack angle

A Big problem with many young kickers on kickoffs. A wide angle takes away from linear power and directional control. The tendency coming from the soccer field to kicking a football is to swing across your body. I see too many kickers really wide in their approach and yet they still kick the ball back to the left with the right foot. Notice how NFL kickers when they’re kicking the ball to the right are still not even as wide as some young kids are that are just blindly kicking the ball down the field, and more than likely expecting to pull it to the left. Then when they land on their follow through, they continue to trip over themselves for several steps because their swing is counterproductive to their bodies momentum

A common hitting flaw that is rarely corrected and can exposes certain hitters at higher levels, is “leaking” … the player’s front side is “running away” from contact prematurely. Sometimes also called “spinning off” the ball. This means energy is escaping the swing because of a chain of events that usually begins with the incorrect action of the stride foot. Correctly engaging the stride foot into the ground, called “foot-plant,” allows the body to efficiently sequence. As a result, the swing is shorter and barrel stays in the hitting zone longer. The BIG key is we have to be able to ***control our front knee*** before starting to swing. If a hitter can control their front knee and their front side a hair longer, stay behind contact, and attack the inside of the ball, it creates more whip.…(bat speed) and improves plate coverage. You might need to watch the video a couple times, because there are various ways to stride that allow the hitter to control their front knee. It is not a one size fits all action. And hitters who have sick power and want to pull the ball intentionally might actually “leak and clear” on purpose. But players who like to stay to middle of the field, might want to see what the initial movement into foot plant looks like. **** Remember, what happens to the front foot (stride foot) AFTER contact has little consequence. Often heavy torque causes it to fly open, or roll on side of foot. That’s all ok.

Pitchers are not only throwing harder than ever but they are better than ever at shaping & moving pitches Yet We design practice for hitters to hit the same comfortable speeds in the same comfortable spots I like to challenge our hitters to hit pitch shapes they will see in the game by using our computerized machine throwing fastballs (-6 degrees down), sliders (-10 degrees down), & curveballs (-16 degrees down) This does invite higher rates of failure in practice but carryover to the demands of the game 📈📈 "The war is won before the first battle is ever fought" - Sun Tzu

Tee challenge. Hit 15 balls off the tee down the middle. If I pull the ball or hit the top of the cage, it’s 1 burpee. Great tee work is very important if you want to be a consistent hitter. Every swing should be intentional. Now, I know some of the hits that didn’t count were good hits but I still wanted to focus on line drives only! I may or may not have miscounted how many I hit and how many burpees 🫣 16 balls hit, 10 burpees is the final tally.
