O-Line Covered Step Drill - This offensive line drill utilizes the lines on a turf field or painted boxes to simulate old-school board drills. - To maximize individual time, coaches can line up multiple players along every five-yard line to get a high volume of repetitions in a short period. - The first movement, or the power step, is a short step used to transfer weight from the backside big toe to the lead leg to create power. - On the coach's second command, players execute the drive step, which provides the actual movement and force of the block. - Players must ensure their second step lands in front of their first step, driving that foot up the crotch of the defender and upfield. - While players in the drill may fall forward without resistance, in a game scenario, this momentum is used to strike the defender in a proper fit. DB High Shoulder Drill - Coaches should instruct defensive backs to eyeball the receiver's near hip to determine the route's direction. - When a receiver's hip moves toward the defender, it indicates the route is rolling over or through, requiring the defender to close the space and attack the hip. - If the receiver's hip moves away from the defender, it signals a vertical route that the defender must chase to reach the catch point. - Defenders should maintain proper footwork and spacing, utilizing techniques such as the kickstep and punch during the play. - Defensive backs must fight force with force by placing their hands on the receiver if the receiver's hands are on them. - Players should be violent at the reception point to effectively knock the football away from the receiver. QB Pat N Go Screen Drill - Every player in the program should be trained on the screen game, specifically focusing on keeping their eyes on the corner during the fast screen. - Receivers must execute a hard step, catch the ball, and immediately work to the sideline while maintaining a distance of five yards. - The drill follows a specific four-part progression that includes the short fade, hard slant, quick screen, and fast screen to build a rhythm for the offense. - Ball security is critical; players must tuck the ball as fast as possible into the outside arm and keep it high and tight. - For the bubble screen portion, players are coached to gain two to three yards of both width and depth during the route. - This rapid-fire drill is designed to maximize individual instruction time for quarterbacks, allowing them to get a high volume of throws in a short period. O-Line Blunt Drill - Drill Purpose and Utility: This drill is designed to simulate backside gap schemes and can be performed with minimal equipment or defenders. - Gap Responsibility and Squeezing: Players, specifically the tackle, must secure the B gap by squeezing down and holding their spot as the guard pulls. - The Blunt Technique: Rather than a traditional step hinge, the "blunt" involves squeezing down and then reacting to a defender's movement to engage. - Hand Usage and Anchoring: When engaging a defender, players should use a two-handed punch, similar to techniques used in drop-back pass protection, to anchor down and be firm with the blunt. - Reaction to Fold Blocks: The drill also addresses fold blocks against 3-4 fronts, where the center must feel the fold, pop up, and be violent when engaging the defender. DB Mirror Dodge Drill - Defensive backs should focus on maintaining their initial leverage while using proper footwork and hand placement to widen the wide receiver during the release. - Defensive backs must avoid putting their near hand in during an inside release because it locks their directional hip and prevents fluid movement. - Coaches should instruct players not to press or lean into an inside release, as this often causes the defender to fall underneath the route and lose positioning. - When a receiver takes an inside release on a vertical route, the defender must burst to stack the route by fighting to get back on top of the receiver. - Players need to understand their defensive help, such as whether they are in a man-free coverage, to decide how to handle a receiver crossing their leverage. - The primary goal for a defensive back on an inside release vertical is to win the rep from the top side rather than trying to slice back underneath the receiver. Cowboys O-Line Drill - Proper stance is achieved by keeping the feet positioned directly underneath the framework of the body and the armpits. - Placing the hand so it straddles the line is a key component of an effective initial setup. - A player should load the left instep to generate the power necessary to gain ground with the right step. - The initial movement involves a quick pick-up and put-down of the feet to maintain balance and momentum. - On the second step, the backside knee should be directed to split the crotch of the defender. - Sustained movement is created by pounding the arches and driving through the insteps to run off the football. LB Scrape Spill Tackle Drill - The scrape spill drill integrates movement skills, block destruction, and tackling into a single exercise. - Linebackers should maintain a downhill path with square shoulders while staying tight to the double team pole. - Proper hand placement for the spill technique requires one hand on the blocker's sternum and the other on the outside of the shoulder pad. - Players must plant their outside foot in the ground to quickly redirect and get back vertical toward the ball carrier. - Coaches should emphasize keeping the eyes up during contact to ensure players see what they are hitting rather than ducking their heads. - The ultimate goal of the drill is to avoid going one-for-one by being violent enough to shed the pulling blocker and make the tackle. LB Intended Receiver Drill LB Run & Pass Techniques and Drills - Linbackers drop to their zones and then move with the Quarterback. - When they come back, they shuffle and then on the set and transfer, one will catch the ball, the second LB will block the intended receiver. - The off-backer comes around to lead the interceptor up the number. - The interceptor will run outside the number to the sideline to try to score. - Linebackers should be in a shuffle mode when the Quarterback turns his shoulders and until he drops his hand off the ball. - When the QB drops his hand, the LBs break to the ball. D-Line Agile Pad Get-off Drill - They utilize an agile bag drill to practice the defensive line's get-off. - The agile bag is placed right up against the drive leg of the D-Linemen. - The goal is to literally launch off the drive leg to gain ground and get over the agile bag. - The defensive lineman should get their drive leg up against the bag and go off on movement. - You want to see the player jump, leave the ground, and get full extension off that drive leg. - The player should gain ground with a 45-degree shin angle. - The technique involves closing space and gaining ground; the player should avoid being "choppy". - The drill can be a competitive race, or the players can simply focus on getting off. - One variation of the drill involves players racing, where the first one to touch the coach's hands wins, going off on movement.
