LB Search & Destroy Drill - The search and destroy drill is highly effective for linebackers when actions inside the box are cloudy or unclear. - Coaches can choose to have players either shuffle or use a crossover step to move from their starting point to the cone. - A primary emphasis of the drill is to ensure the linebacker keeps their shoulders, hips, and feet square once they reach the cone. - Linebackers must avoid crossing over their feet when making contact with the ball carrier. - The drill should be executed at a thud tempo during the teaching phase so both the linebacker and the ball carrier can feel the movement, with the ball carrier waiting to make a decision until the linebacker reaches the cone. - The drill is excellent for young linebackers to learn how to match the path of the running back and track where he is going, rather than just running blindly through gaps. LB 1-2 Step Tackling Progression - Linebackers should focus on using the near foot and near shoulder when initiating contact with a ball carrier. - Players must overemphasize swinging their arms in an uppercut motion to generate power through the contact point. - A core fundamental is to get a leg and take a leg, which involves squeezing and attempting to lift the opponent's leg during the tackle. - Coaches should look for players to have their face in contact and aimed at the center of the ball carrier's mass. - After making contact, defenders should overemphasize driving their feet for at least five steps to finish the play. - The tackling progression moves systematically from static contact to taking one step into contact and then two steps back to build consistency. DB Box Tackling Drill - The drill is set up using a five-yard spacing box with a popup dummy positioned in the center. - Defensive backs begin the drill in a pedal and must maintain an inside-out relationship to the ball carrier to properly win their leverage. - When a ball carrier cuts back, the defender should aim for a chest-to-chest tackle with eyes positioned below the ball carrier's eyes. - Effective tackling requires maintaining three bends in the body and creating knock-back through overexaggerated leg drive upon contact. - To eliminate cutback lanes, the defender must track the near hip and stay behind the ball carrier rather than getting even or in front of them. - Coaches should emphasize a drive-for-five mentality after contact and encourage defenders to rip at the ball to simulate a takeaway. LB Scrape Spill Tackle Drill - The scrape spill drill integrates movement skills, block destruction, and tackling into a single exercise. - Linebackers should maintain a downhill path with square shoulders while staying tight to the double team pole. - Proper hand placement for the spill technique requires one hand on the blocker's sternum and the other on the outside of the shoulder pad. - Players must plant their outside foot in the ground to quickly redirect and get back vertical toward the ball carrier. - Coaches should emphasize keeping the eyes up during contact to ensure players see what they are hitting rather than ducking their heads. - The ultimate goal of the drill is to avoid going one-for-one by being violent enough to shed the pulling blocker and make the tackle. D-Line Drive Sled Drill - The drive sled drill is designed to develop muscle memory in defensive linemen so they understand the necessity of continuing to drive their feet upon making contact with an opponent. - Players must demonstrate explosive movement by coming out of their hips and shooting their hands directly from the ground to the man to initiate contact. - It is critical for the player to maintain a wide base throughout the duration of the drill while driving the sled. - Coaches should ensure that a player's feet never get too close together during the drive, as keeping them spread allows the athlete to maintain power. - Maintaining full arm extension while driving is a key technical component for defensive linemen to master during this exercise. - The drill concludes, and the player releases from the sled only when the coach blows the whistle. LB Run Fits Drill The video outlines a linebacker drill designed to help players adjust their run fits based on the movement of defensive linemen. Key learning points include: - Dynamic Gap Fitting: Linebackers must be prepared to "make it right" rather than just fitting a pre-assigned gap if the defensive front is compromised. - Drill Setup: The drill utilizes a defensive lineman (represented by a coach with a bag) and a running back to simulate real-game scenarios. - Reacting to Defensive Line Movement: The linebacker must observe where the defensive lineman's head goes, such as a 3-technique getting knocked into an A-gap or a 2-eye getting reached or pushed into a B-gap. - Responding to Ball Carrier Cuts: Linebackers must mirror the running back’s cut and then "thud" him up to finish the tackle. - Redirecting and Filling: Players must practice redirecting their momentum; for example, if a linebacker expects to fill the B-gap but finds it occupied by a teammate, they must quickly jump cut or redirect to fill the new open gap. - Downhill Aggression: The goal of the drill is to train linebackers to see the opening and get downhill quickly to fill the vacant gap.
