SMS Trinity thought, 6 months in. Comparison to BE Meyers MAWL & 3EIR DIR-V I’ve had 2 of the Trinity lasers from SMS for about 6 months now. They have been on my wife’s 11.5, and my 12.5, both of which are our main training rifles. Durability: They’ve been to the range countless times, more than a few thousand rounds with them mounted. They’ve been taken to DARC for force on force training, taken direct hits from sims, been thrown in and out of trucks, dropped, rained on, and left in the sweltering heat. So far I have had no issues, only a sample of two, but still. Mine have held zero just fine. I have heard of others having issues with it. Unless it’s a major shift and happening often, I’m not worried. You should be checking and adjusting zeros often on all your optics. Power: Very powerful lasers and illuminators, but thankfully very adjustable. Many Chinese lasers suffer from overpowered lasers. These can be that bright, but can easily be toned down. Usability and switches: The Trinity does a good job here. The rotary dial has positions for vis, off, laser only etc, but also has two programmable laser/illuminator positions. This allows you to program a high and medium setting for both laser and illuminator independently. I don’t know of many lasers that offer that level of programmability. The divergence slider is ok, I wish it went out wider and didn’t go as narrow on the other end. Just kinda wasted potential there if that divergence was tuned a little better. The diffuser is well designed, robust, and won’t snap off like a peq/ngal. But it’s still a manual diffuser, which sucks to use rapidly. Overall: The trinity is batting so far out of its price bracket it’s insane. For $350 you can buy multiples of them for the price of 1 other laser on the market. Comparison: DIR-V: this used to be the best “affordable” Civ laser. It lacks almost any adjustment, and has a manual diffuser. It has the best form factor of almost any laser, and the lack of adjustment is ok since it’s tuned pretty well as far as power and divergence goes. Hard to recommend it over the Trinity unless the form factor is a big factor for your build. MAWL: the MAWL is better. But it’s 10x the price. You can see in the video the MAWLs Switchology is unmatched, and it simply leads to better, faster results. The Trinity beats it in programmability, but the MAWL is very much tuned to perfection between its modes, and I have never wished for a different option than what’s available. If you have the money, get a MAWL. But you could also just get 10 Trinity’s.. Full power PEQ15/NGAL/full power DBAL/somogear/ etc: in my opinion, ALL of these are outdated and outclassed. Terrible divergence control. Over or under powered. Horrid diffuser designs. No warranties. Expensive. Petri dish illuminators. Just get a Trinity.

But what about passive aiming!? But what about gas masks?! It’s doable, and not that bad. Does having a riser help? Yes. What I’ve come around to, is that the performance trade off is not worth sacrificing control in 90% of my shooting for a small convenience in 10%.

This post raised some questions. So let’s talk about rifles and vehicles, and why I do it this way. Context is everything. If you are just throwing your rifle in your truck to transport it, or because you might want to pop a coyote on your property at a moments notice, this may not apply to you. Do with the information what you will. FWIW, I generally don’t roll around with a rifle in my truck at all. Maybe if I lived in a place with less vehicle break ins, I would. I don’t subscribe to the notion of “using my pistol to fight to my rifle” as a rule of thumb, but there are times where I will roll with more heavy ordinance for various reasons.

Ok first impressions using the Trinity + comparison to MAWL C1+ Power: Very much on par with each other. The Trinity comes with instructions on how to jailbreak it, so it’s not playing by the same FDA rules as the MAWL. It’s slightly more powerful. Switchology: The MAWL still reigns supreme, but not by much. I’m very impressed with the Trinitys ability to switch between wide and narrow illuminator on the fly. While not as dummy proof and instant as the MAWL, it’s still good. I always talk about Switchology with lasers, because in real used it’s incredibly important to be able to manipulate your laser and illuminator to fit your environment. Raw power means nothing if it can’t be used (or more often it hinders you) Durability and zero retention will be something we discover over time. I can say from personal experience the MAWL has been a tank. It’s taken countless impacts, drops, direct impacts with sims, cold, freezing, submersion, extreme heat, and has never once failed or even stuttered. I HIGHLY doubt the trinity will match it, but I can’t expect it to at 1/10th the cost. BE Meyers make an incredible laser, and actually make it here in America. It’s the gold standard for a reason. And I’ll always support that. That being said, for the average prepared citizen, it’s probably worth considering options that are more affordable. We are finally getting lasers that meet a level of acceptable performance at an affordable price point, and that’s exciting.

Land Nav Training: FOR FREE IMO, land nav is an exceptionally important skill to have. Relying solely on GPS and electronic means to navigate is setting yourself up for disaster. I recently found this old Army web game. It lets you: -plot points using MGRS/UTM -Plot azimuths -route plan -determine distance (sorta, it kinda cheats for you) -terrain associate -keep a pace count -validate your map work by actually walking your route and finding points that are scored like an Army land nav course. Also for some reason it lets you drop a PT belt on the ground. IDK why, but that's awesome (SGM will be very upset if you leave your PT belt on the land nav course). This doesnt replace real training. there are so many nuances to actually doing land nav that cant be replicated. But this is a fantastic intro or refresher tool. Link in next post
