In June, Sam Asante and I launched Typeahead, the first product from our new company. Today we're releasing our next Mac app. It's called Beam, and we're live on Product Hunt. I've got Macs all over my house doing different work. Some run agents and local models. Others handle builds. When I want to use one app on another Mac, I usually end up navigating a whole second desktop through Screen Sharing. Beam brings that app's window onto the Mac I'm using. It gets its own Dock icon and shows up in ⌘Tab. I can type into it and resize it while everything keeps running on the other Mac. Sam has put a lot of care into making this feel natural. The video shows it better than I can explain it. Live on Product Hunt →

Been working with Sam Asante on a new company. Today we’re releasing our first product. It’s called Typeahead and we’re live on Product Hunt. You type and inline suggestions appear right in the text field. Tab to accept the full suggestion or right arrow for one word at a time. It learns how you actually write. Everything runs locally on your Mac, works offline, and you pay once. $79 and you own it forever. If you write a lot on a Mac, check it out and let us know what you think. I almost never build software because I personally want it. Historically, I’ve preferred starting with customers. Before investing months in a product, I want to understand the struggle and see what people are already trying to do. Part of that bias was practical. Software was expensive to build. Beam started differently. We build Mac apps, so development and QA happen across a bunch of machines. We kept running into moments when something we needed was open on another one, sometimes for only a few minutes. The usual answer was Screen Sharing. You climb into the other computer, find what you need, do the work, then climb back out. Sam Asante built the first version around a simpler idea. If a window was running on that Mac, it should be able to live on this one. That became Beam. Building the first version was cheap enough that the product itself could become the research. We put it in front of people. I asked people on X about their weird multi-Mac setups. More than 100 people replied and 42 filled out a baseline form. They described use cases we hadn’t considered and gave us better language for the product than we had ourselves. We used a Grok Bot to research the same behavior across X. It found more people already living with the problem and surfaced places where our assumptions were wrong. The next step is bringing those early users together in a small X group chat. They’ll get Beam free while we learn how it fits into the setups they already have. I still believe customers eventually matter more than your own intuition. They outnumber you. The difference now is sequencing. Scratch your own itch. Ship it. Then find out how many other people are scratching the same place.

Today Sam Asante and I are releasing Typeahead 2.0 on Product Hunt. Sam and I started this company because we think local AI software is going to become a much bigger part of how people use their computers. Typeahead is the first product from that thesis. The first version made the idea clear. AI autocomplete should work in the apps where writing already happens. Since then, we have been shipping toward the product that idea deserves. The app feels faster and more natural. Suggestions are easier to control. The experience is more native to the Mac. It's getting better at staying out of the way until the exact moment it can help. That matters because writing is personal. The best AI writing help keeps you in the sentence. You stay in flow and keep your voice. The machine helps without taking over. Typeahead works across your Mac, runs locally, works offline, and is built to feel like software you own. We’re live on Product Hunt today.

One week ago, we launched Typeahead. The product is already meaningfully better. We’ve shipped new features, Typeahead 2.0 is almost ready, and we’re already planning 3.0. 3.0 is going to be big. That pace is part of the point. Sam Asante and I started a new company together because we wanted to see how far we could push local AI software. Typeahead is the first thing we shipped. It is a local AI writing app for Mac. You type, suggestions appear inline, and it learns how you actually write. It works offline. You pay once. $79 and you own it. The product is intentionally simple. The thesis behind it is bigger. We think local models are going to create a new class of software. Fast, private and offline. By default. Personal without being creepy. Useful without turning everything into a subscription. Most AI products today assume the model lives in the cloud. That will not be the only path. The machines we already own are getting powerful enough. The models are getting small enough. And the experience can start to feel less like chatting with a remote service and more like using software that belongs on your computer. We have already built a few fully local experiments together. Typeahead felt right because the value is immediate. A few people have asked me how this fits with Crazy Egg. Crazy Egg is still my main work. This is a focused company with Sam, built around a thesis we both believe in. I’ve learned that the people I work with shape the work more than almost anything else. Sam was already on my short list of people I wanted to build with. Typeahead is the first public proof of the thesis. Watch the video. Get it here:

Before you build your AI product, ask one question: would anyone switch from ChatGPT for this?

Brian Chesky on watching Rocket Internet clone Airbnb, live in-person. Devs and designers had two monitors open. - On the left: Airbnb's website. - On the right: Wimdu, aka "Airbnb for Europe". Rocket didn't hide their copycat playbook. So I dug deeper and broke it down below:
