Stop scrolling and just take 20 seconds to read this. Then share it with development coaches! We’ve translated the lip reading from this excellent insight between Argentina manager Lionel Scaloni and central midfielder Leandro Paredes. So many coaches try to control everything. Scaloni does something different. He listens. He includes. Then he manages the situation around what his players see, feel and need on the pitch. In this clip, Paredes explains that he is struggling to progress the ball because the opposition number nine is starting close to him and blocking the passing lanes based on the angles of support Paredes offers from central areas. His solution? He needs an extra centre back so one of them can step forward. That will either allow the centre backs to build the play themselves, or attract the number nine towards them, freeing Paredes to receive in space and take control of the game. He asks Scaloni to introduce an extra centre back to support that build up, believing it is the best way for Argentina to regain and retain control of the game. Scaloni listens, and immediately begins working on the solution. Throughout the World Cup, the cameras repeatedly captured Lionel Messi discussing on field problems with Scaloni and explaining how he believed they could be solved. That is not a weakness in the manager. That is leadership. Empowering others making them feel more attached to the objective. An environment where players are included in the planning. Not robots blindly following instructions. Footballers. THINKERS. DECISION MAKERS. THIS IS FOOTBALL, Decision makers! Develop decision makers. Get instructive control freaks out of development football!! The game is a constant series of problems and decisions. If players are always waiting for answers from the sideline, they will never reach their full potential, individually or collectively. Coach the player. Develop the thinker.

Before stepping away from Uruguay, Marcelo Bielsa sat down for an hour and a half last night to reflect on his time in charge. But one part of what he said is absolutely astonishing. Bielsa claimed that very few people showed any real interest in what he knows. Few, if any, made a genuine attempt to learn from him. Think about that. One of the most influential football minds of the modern era is basically saying that the people around him did not value his knowledge, his ideas, or his methods. It now feels a lot clearer what was really going on. The Uruguay players simply didn’t buy into Bielsa’s beliefs about the game or his approach to training. That is an incredible thing to say, but these are Bielsa’s own words. And when a man like him speaks with that level of honesty, you tend to listen. If true, it points to an astonishing lack of respect. You can know everything, but if the people playing for you don't like you, it's worthless.

WOW. Marcelo Bielsa is 70 years of age, and his parting message to Uruguay carries a lesson every coach should sit with. No group is the same. No individual is the same. Nobody. Bielsa admits he has never tried to be the “friendly” coach. He values order, discipline, seriousness, obsession. That has made him one of the most respected minds in football. But even Bielsa seems to accept something powerful here: That approach does not work for every player. It does not work in every environment. And knowledge alone is never enough. As a coach, you have to find a way to connect. Quote us on this: “You can have all the knowledge in the world, but it is absolutely useless if the people playing don’t like you. Player management and people management might not be on coaching courses, but don’t be kidded by associations. It is the most important quality a coach can have.” Football is about tactics, detail, preparation and standards. But above all, it is about people. So many coaches out there fail to grasp this, they think they can shout their way to development or success, and this day and age you simply can't.

Day one of Roberto De Zerbi at Tottenham Hotspur is in the books, and a couple of small moments already say a lot about how meticulous he is. No matter how minor or major the situation, he coaches what the game presents. The first example came when he approached Dominic Solanke. During a small sided game, Solanke was using constant movement, checking runs and changing direction to create space. When play paused, De Zerbi stepped in to explain that in tight areas, locking/shielding the defender directly can actually create more space surrounding him to receive, without needing movement. It sounds simple, but if it needs coaching, he addresses it immediately and with intent. The moments of when to move vs when to lock on! The second moment highlighted his well known focus on tempo. He urged calm from defenders when they had an overload, encouraging them to slow things down just enough to ensure accurate distribution. That patience also allows the structure ahead of the ball to take shape and for movement to develop, leading to more controlled and progressive possession. When the moment is right tempo speeds up to progress the play! The detail stands out. If it's detail and energy Tottenham wanted, Roberto De Zerbi will 100% bring that.

Amazing insights here with thanks to West Ham United. 🚨 New boss Nuno Espírito Santo is already making his mark on the training ground 👀⚒️ A few key takeaways from his early session: ✅ Building an open environment where players feel comfortable sharing input. ✅ Emphasizing forward thinking play by introducing a constraint that passes back to the goalkeeper during small-sided games are not allowed more than once (Futsal Style) ✅ Bringing energy and positivity, his encouraging style and constant communication are infectious. Big question: is Nuno the man to spark a turnaround at West Ham? 🔥⚽️

Want to see Pep Guardiola lose it? 😡 Then disrespect the rondo. To some, it’s just a warm-up — a bit of pre-training fun ⚽ To Pep, it’s simply 🙏 A non-negotiable standard. He’ll pull coaches aside and break it down — coaching the coaches, demanding perfection, and expecting them to then demand it to 👀 He often personally oversees the rondos to make sure the levels are as high as possible 🔍 📹 This clip from a recent Man City session says it all… Just look at the ball speed 💨 The technique 🎯 The intensity 🔥 Frightening stuff!! Meet 18 year old Moussa Jacky Toure, who sent this video our way all the way from the Ivory Coast. Take a second to look at the surface he’s training on… uneven, unpredictable, far from ideal. Now look at the touches, the control, the ability to adapt. That’s not luck, that’s dedication! Moussa has dreams of finding an opportunity in the game at a professional level, and what stood out most to us was his commitment to finding a way, not an excuse. There’s something in that every footballer can learn from. If you love the game, you find a way. Here’s hoping Moussa finds his.

All coaches, take note. Rayan Cherki was filmed by Keepitonthedeck at the St Kevins Academy Cup ten years ago. Back then not once in that entire tournament was he met with shouts of pass the ball. Not once was he taken off for attempting tricks or flicks. No one barked at him to run aimlessly. What we saw was a young player given true freedom. At twelve years of age, playing against thirteen year olds, his ability was not just impressive, it was joyful to watch. It made people smile and at times even laugh at how effortlessly he played. Comfortable on both feet at that age as well. What stood out most was not just his skill, but the environment around him. He was allowed to express himself and grow, without being restricted by a coach or confined by a system. We even witnessed him lead and take entire team warm ups, given ownership of a team with players older than him. Coaches are there to help talent, not destroy them. Both types of coaches exist, so careful which ones you play under! As Cherki said himself, “If we don't play with pleasure, you can't play better, you can't show what you want.”

Spain Used This Possession Setup in training yesterday ahead of a huge fixture vs Uruguay in the early hours of Saturday (UK Time) In Variation 1, teams keep possession and look to score with a one touch finish into the mini goals. A direct one touch finish is worth one point, while a one touch finish after a bounce pass off an end line neutral is worth two points. In Variation 2, the team in possession must first get two players onto each flank before they can score. This encourages width, quick circulation, and then fast counter pressing when the ball is lost. Follow us for more like this and join our website for instant access to more content.

Roberto De Zerbi Positional Rondo working with Tottenham Hotspur yesterday morning Real purpose behind it from a game principles perspective! ⚽ 4v2 positional rondo variation ⚽ Tight 8x6 yard space to increase pressure ⚽ Players fixed in position to maintain structure ⚽ No freedom to drift The objective was centered around recognizing the moments in possession 💡 When to take touches 💡 When to play quickly 💡 When to invite pressure Key coaching detail QUOTE "The opposition decides the speed we play" What did he mean by that?? = 🔥 Aggressive press = Quick play with good support angles. 🔥 Passive press = More touches and composure on the ball to invite pressure and then break it. Tottenham Hotspur training this morning. Lots of people asking about the practice from Roberto De Zerbi today, so here it is. The first place you'll find this animated to explain, before other pages see it then make it also. Three zones. Five v two running in the active end zones. Split by a central zone. Out of possession, the pressers in the central zone can press wide players or look to intercept direct transfers. Focus on patience in possession. Move it, wait, then find the right moment to turn and progress, either wide or straight through. 🔴 Manchester United 9v9+2 Compact Units Setup 📏 Played from just outside 18 yard box to 18 yard box ⚽ 9v9 + 2 neutrals 🎯 Target goals positioned to encourage central passes. The focus was on compact defensive shape, protecting the middle, and moving together as a unit up and down the pitch. Players were coached to defend central overloads first and force the ball wide. This wasn’t random. United’s win over City was no fluke. Credit to Michael Carrick and his staff for delivering the exact tactical messages the game demanded. There is nothing wrong with giving people credit where credit is due. It's not getting over excited, it's praising a good job done! Simple ideas. Clear structure. Match winning details. 📥 More training ideas available here:
