Had everything gone according to plan, today we’d have had less or no power cuts & stable prices that wouldn’t jump every time oil prices go crazy. Sri Lanka was positioning itself as a green energy hub, not just consuming but exporting. Imagine how much revenue it could bring.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe offered his audience a brilliant exchange at the 2023 Islands Dialogue. This is quite possibly the zenith of his interviews. His knowledge of the intricacies of the shifting geopolitical arena as well as his intellectual prowess are unparalleled.🇱🇰

One of the first things Ranil Wickremesinghe did in July 2022 was thank the police and tri forces for protecting Parliament. Now three years later, seeing Nepal’s Parliament and Supreme Court set on fire, a woman burned alive, and so much death and destruction, it is hard not to think about what might have happened to Sri Lanka if RW had not stepped in back then. How many more would have dropped dead while standing in queues? How many would have been burned alive, beaten to death and dragged through the streets? What would have become of our economy? Sometimes you only see the value of a person and their decisions when you look at what happened elsewhere and realise it could have happened to you as well, if not for the timely and necessary decisions made while fearlessly risking their own life and home. Oh, so now we’re mad that RW spent time with his wife on her birthday? He was working in the area, and she was there with him. Why does AKD have such a hard time grasping that, in a normal marriage, people don’t keep their partners tucked away from the public? The initiative to grow vegetables was a practical, cost-cutting decision so the staff and all those foreign dignitaries the first couple had to entertain nearly every weekend could have something fresh on the table without the extra expense. She even grew flowers so all the presidential residences could handle the floral arrangements in-house. Efficient, economical—a First Lady setting a sensible example. What’s the problem here? Now, how did AKD travel to Nuwara Eliya for this rally? By helicopter, wasn’t it? And where did he stay while he was there? The presidential bungalow? These bungalows have been around since colonial times. It might be AKD’s first time in one, but it’s puzzling why he finds it magic. Did he expect a broken-down shack lacking the dignity fitting of his office? The funny thing is that Jeppas are shifting from “imported fruits” to “grown in the President’s Bungalow.” Makes you wonder what’ll change next.

it’s refreshing to hear someone speak in complete sentences that actually lead to a coherent argument. if this advice given back in march had been followed, sri lanka might not have weakened its negotiating position or lost the chance to record which countries would and wouldn’t have supported us during the unhrc session in september.

The ideal man for the job! I was just waiting for them to finally start addressing the corruption they claimed had happened. According to Wasantha, of the 833 vehicles belonging to the Presidential Secretariat, 29 are missing, and 253 are being used for external tasks. He also promises to hold accountable those behind the Easter Attacks, the Bond Scam, and the Bar License Scandals, where bar licenses have reportedly been sold for 30-40 million. At the same time, if they could focus on recovering the $10 or $18 billion allegedly belonging to the Rajapaksas, supposedly hidden in Uganda, and bring that money back, we wouldn’t have to rely on anyone for loans.

Doctors say RW is suffering from dehydration. They say he has a rapid heartbeat and low sodium levels in his kidneys, which is why he was immediately moved to the ICU. They say dehydration can cause heat stroke, and if it is not treated promptly and properly, it can lead to kidney failure or even a heart attack. On Aug 22nd Ranil Wickremesinghe went to the CID at 9 in the morning. He was arrested, taken to court in the afternoon and then kept there for more than 10 hours. During that time there was an hours-long power cut. He had not been given anything to eat or even a drop of water. Is this how you treat a man who has done so much for the country? He saved people from dying in queues from heart attacks and heat strokes, yet today he is subjected to the same suffering. Truly shocking and inhumane.

“I proudly represent my motherland, Sri Lanka. I come from a small town called Anuradhapura—the first kingdom of Sri Lanka and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. No one expected that someone from there would be the one to carry that heritage to the world—but that is exactly what I’m doing. Geographically, Sri Lanka is a tiny island you might not even notice on the map. But the hearts, the hopes, the spirit of my people are anything but small—they’re immense. We’ve endured conflict, natural disasters, a pandemic, and economic crisis. Yet my people remained strong, hopeful, and resilient. And I believe it’s that very resilience that has propelled me to where I am today.” Miss World Sri Lanka 2024, Anudi Gunasekara, speaking at the Head-to-Head Challenge | Continental Final – Europe, Asia & Oceania Video courtesy of the Miss World YouTube channel.

Q: Why did you attend a Rajapaksa birthday party and sing “Happy Birthday” when the cake arrived? A: In Sri Lanka, we attend social functions when invited. This was one of the questions on Head to Head on Al Jazeera. This was supposed to be the show’s big comeback, but if only RW had been allowed to speak without constant interruptions from the host, we might have actually learned something about our own country. Then again, should we really expect better from someone who once called people of other faiths “cattle,” said atheists were “people of no intelligence,” and tweeted about making American planes crash? The whole thing felt staged. Loaded questions, cherry-picked audience members, and constant interjections to throw RW off. Yet despite all that, he answered honestly. He spoke about the economic crisis, the Easter attack, the hypocrisy of certain human rights organisations, his equation with the Rajapaksas, the civil war, the final days of the war, the 1983 riots, the Batalanda Commission report, and much more. But of course, most of it was cut from the final edit. Another wasted chance, especially for younger viewers, to hear the full story. Hopefully one day we’ll get an interview where the host actually lets the guest speak instead of pushing for clickbait moments.

166 million?? Already decided misappropriation happened before CID is even done investigating and before trial even starts? Isn’t that contempt of court, prejudicing proceedings and undermining judicial independence? And what’s this anger about his wife being the only one who knows how to use his CPAP machine? Is that what this whole thing is really about? It’s a big question!!

AKD claims from Canada that Sri Lanka’s tourism is all about hotels. He might as well dismiss our Ceylon tea as just hot leaf juice. Also, he’s throwing around random figures about tourist return rates to Sri Lanka, figures he himself admits he’s unsure of. Play all the politics you want, but at least show some respect for your country. The top international rankings Sri Lanka receives clearly contradict AKD’s claims.

When countries like Sri Lanka are given a platform, it is more than symbolic. We are expected to speak for a region, for the Global South. We have done that well in recent years by balancing power blocs, speaking clearly on policy, and never sounding like a client state. From last year.⬇️
