Columbo had such a talent for politely threatening people without actually threatening them. He may as well have said "This isn't my first rodeo. I'm onto you, prick. I've got the scent, and I'm not going anywhere." 😂 But that's not Columbo

LAWRENCE OF ARABIA [1962] Directed by David Lean ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Surely, when Omar Sharif signed on for this film, he wasn't aware David Lean would gift him with what might reasonably be considered the greatest character entrance in cinema.

JAWS [1975] At the start of the clip, I absolutely love the excellent bit of filmmaking where Quint looks at the reel when it first clicks, then it clicks a second time and he stops eating his cracker. On the third and fourth clicks, he puts on his harness.

In BEVERLY HILLS COP [1984], Bronson Pinchot is on screen for ninety seconds and gives one of the most memorable performances.

THE SHINING [1980] I consider this to be the point of no return for Jack, when the Overlook seals the deal with him. Jack says "I'd do anything for a drink. I'd give my goddamned soul for a glass of beer." Then Lloyd appears suddenly.

"THE SWIMMER [1968] is a surreal, unsettling, and highly stylized masterpiece, featuring an unforgettable performance by Burt Lancaster, and directed by Frank Perry. It is based on the 1964 short story of the same title by author John Cheever. It follows a man’s delusional journey across suburban pools, which serves as a profound allegory for the decline of the American Dream, personal failure, and the loss of youth. A "suburban odyssey" that blends a dreamy, sunny aesthetic with dark, psychological undercurrents, it acts as a blistering satire of upper-middle class affluence, vanity and denial. The film is known for its dream-like, sometimes disjointed narrative, with some viewers seeing it as an interpretation of the descent into Hell."

IN A VIOLENT NATURE [2024] has made its way into my top ten. It manages to use several tropes without abusing any of them. There's no music. The scariest thing about the killer is how slow and deliberate he is, yet capable. Unflinching violence, not for the squeamish.

This is one of my favorite moments from ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST [1975]. Miloš Forman really captured something special with this cast and source material. I love the relationship between McMurphy and Chief.

EASTERN PROMISES [2007] Directed by David Cronenberg Mortensen and Watts are spectacular together in this film. What I love most about the film is how Cronenberg lets us make our own assumptions about Mortensen's character, and then shows how wrong we were to assume.

CROSS OF IRON [1977] Directed by Sam Peckinpah This is a very underseen WW2 film. Set on the Russian Front in 1943, it's a gritty and realistic affair. James Coburn is excellent, as are James Mason and Maximilian Schell. Peckinpah got his hands on real T-34 tanks, too!

Stanley Kubrick uses his mastery of visual language so effectively in THE SHINING [1980]. Bless Shelley Duvall for having to walk backwards for four consecutive minutes while being berated by Jack Nicholson. I've left this whole scene intact so you can enjoy the tension buildup!

My all-time favorite credit flash for a director is in Sam Peckinpah's THE WILD BUNCH [1969]. William Holden's line and the freeze frame are awesome. It also happens to be my favorite western.

EYES WIDE SHUT [1999] I love Kubrick's choice to cast Sydney Pollack. He doesn't have much screen time, but he's perfect. This "come to Jesus" moment is a great scene. For the patient and thoughtful viewer, there's an embarrassment of riches in this film.

PLATOON [1986] Directed by Oliver Stone Tom Berenger as Staff Sgt Barnes is so unhinged he actually scares me. Did Berenger ever give another performance anywhere close to this good? Sergeant Barnes is the stuff of nightmares.
