EASTERN PROMISES [2007] Directed by David Cronenberg Mortensen and Watts are spectacular together in this film. What I love most about the film is how Cronenberg lets us make our own assumptions about Mortensen's character, and then shows how wrong we were to assume.

CROSS OF IRON [1977] Directed by Sam Peckinpah This is a very underseen WW2 film. Set on the Russian Front in 1943, it's a gritty and realistic affair. James Coburn is excellent, as are James Mason and Maximilian Schell. Peckinpah got his hands on real T-34 tanks, too!
