IN A VIOLENT NATURE [2024] has made its way into my top ten. It manages to use several tropes without abusing any of them. There's no music. The scariest thing about the killer is how slow and deliberate he is, yet capable. Unflinching violence, not for the squeamish.

CROSS OF IRON [1977] Directed by Sam Peckinpah This is a very underseen WW2 film. Set on the Russian Front in 1943, it's a gritty and realistic affair. James Coburn is excellent, as are James Mason and Maximilian Schell. Peckinpah got his hands on real T-34 tanks, too!

EYES WIDE SHUT [1999] I love Kubrick's choice to cast Sydney Pollack. He doesn't have much screen time, but he's perfect. This "come to Jesus" moment is a great scene. For the patient and thoughtful viewer, there's an embarrassment of riches in this film.
