Smart Doll Cortex 2 can now be equipped with an AI conversational #M5Stack module, allowing them to speak both English and Chinese. Thanks to their magnetic modular design, all components fit seamlessly inside the body—something not possible with the vinyl version. This Xiao Zhi powered model also features an optional screen that displays readable replies and emoji-based expressions, enhancing interactions with visual feedback. Smart Doll’s quirky responses to misheard inputs often lead to unexpected lols. At first, their replies are unpredictable, adding to their charm and making conversations feel organic and fun. However, they become more accurate over time as they learn from interactions. The AI models powering Smart Doll are trained in Natural Language Understanding, enabling them to grasp context, intent, and nuances in user input for more meaningful responses. They also support context retention across multiple conversation turns, allowing for smooth and continuous dialogue. They adapt and refine their responses as they engage in more conversations, making interactions feel increasingly natural and personalized. We will provide tutorials and #3Dprinting files so folks can build their modules and install AI models such as ChatGPT, DeepSeek, Qwen2.5 72B, etc. This way, owners can tweak their Smart Doll’s voice, accent, and personality to reflect their creativity, ideals, and identity. With the advancement of open-source offline LLMs, local processing ensures your Smart Doll can safeguard the secrets you share—keeping them safe from Skynet. We are also working on integrating robotics and hardware control to broaden the application of #smartdoll as a truly useful companion (instead of just sitting around asking you for more apparel) that can interact with their environment, assist with everyday tasks, and adapt to their owner’s needs—whether that means offering companionship, controlling smart home devices, or even detecting environmental changes for safety. If you’re Team John Connor, no worries! AI components are entirely optional—whether you choose to go DIY or skip them altogether, the decision is yours. At least until Skynet has other plans.

Our Battle Angel Alita cosplay will be on display from tomorrow this weekend at London Comic Con Winter at Olympia, November 16-17. I’ve set her all up to run on an ESP32 microprocessor powering an OLED display that shows the #smartdoll protocol boot sequence. The setup also includes pulsating lights that bring the cyber shell to life. For the past 10 years, whenever folks asked, “What’s so ‘smart’ about Smart Doll?” I’d share the story of how it all started as an April Fools’ joke that went viral. Back then, “Smart Doll” was imagined as a doll that could do your homework and even had built-in flamethrowers. The name stuck—almost as if it chose us—and it became an ongoing challenge to address, given the lack of any “smart” functionality. It’s a question I’ve been inspired to tackle in new ways ever since. ;-) But times have changed. Now, when people ask the same question, I simply reply, “What do you want them to do?” Until now, folks have used the Smart Doll platform to express creativity through our diverse collection of body shapes and skin tones. But Smart Doll is evolving—continuing to be a canvas for imagination while becoming a platform for innovation and limitless possibilities. With Cyber Shell Cortex, we’ve come full circle. Designed as a customizable shell for DIY enthusiasts, it allows folks to pair their Smart Doll with sensors, servo motors, and other modules, transforming them into an IoT-enabled companion capable of connecting to APIs like ChatGPT or IFTTT to control home appliances and more. For the first time, Smart Doll can truly live up to its name, limited only by the physical space inside and the creativity of those who dare to make it their own. There’s still work to do—like redesigning the spine to create more internal space for rechargeable batteries, modules, and servomotors. I’m also exploring motorized body panels that can open automatically—features that require retooling molds. While it’ll take some time before the release, I believe it will be worth the wait. Once the classic body is complete, my next goal is to Cortexify the Pear Body. More photos on the site

I’ve shared this video before, but today it holds extra special significance. Ten years ago today, we began shipping Smart Doll from our home in Meguro, Tokyo - the birthplace of Smart Doll. Reflecting on the past decade, there’s so much I want to share about our journey, the milestones we’ve achieved, and the valuable lessons learned from our failures. It’s challenging to condense all these experiences into a single post, so I’ll save some stories for a rainy day ;-) Our vision has evolved significantly, particularly in our commitment to representing those traditionally overlooked in the doll market. We’ve focused on creating dolls with darker skin tones, plus-sized body shapes, and diverse skin characteristics and medical conditions, while striving to make these products readily available worldwide. It’s becoming increasingly clear that relentless pursuit of sales growth does not equate to happiness. Because of this realization, our approach at Smart Doll may not align with the mass market, and we’ve never aimed to dominate the industry solely for the sake of increasing sales. We believe that time is our most valuable asset, not money, and we uphold this philosophy across our entire team. We strive to ensure that our work environment prioritizes the well-being and life balance of every team member, fostering a culture where everyone can thrive, not just survive. Moving forward, we remain committed to creating products that represent those often overlooked in the industry. We will continue to ensure that our customers are well-informed about alternatives from other manufacturers where our offerings fall short. Additionally, we will continue to innovate, enhancing both the customer experience and our operational efficiency, as exemplified by the recent introduction of the Evolve frame. Although we’ve overcome many challenges from our early days, it still feels like day one as new challenges continue to emerge.
