I can’t really dismiss a sequence like this as “automated” gameplay since it’s essentially a teaching moment for the player. “This is what happens when Sonic applies a ton of speed to a ramp, now use that inertia to collect all these rings by *platforming* on the enemies”.

Meanwhile here's Mark Cerny and Shinobu Toyoda telling a story that actually matches reality. SOA hated the design not because it was too edgy, but because it was too cutesy/Japanime for the West. Until they saw a playable demo, they considered the character "unsalvagable".

Even a tiny detail like Amy not yelping anymore when she gets kindapped stands out. Just makes the moment feel a lot more limp and passive. I wonder what they were thinking with that 🤷

It’s been said before but it bears repeating: why can MARIO roll better than Sonic lmao 😂 If the next 3D game can give us roll physics this clean, I’ll give Sega such massive props. Sonic’s insane speed would make it SO much sweeter.

Sonic Origins has lots of little flaws, but most of them aren't the end of the world. Sonic 1, 2 and CD are mostly just fine. Its biggest screw-up by far imo is how they ruined this beauitful scene.

Sonic CD and 8-bit Sonic 2 being composed simultaneously is actually not surprising at all if you listen real close 🎵

Most people think these Mega CD cutcenes are ass, but there's something super gorgeous to me about replicating such complex cel animation with detailed sprites. They even improved certain things like the quartz crystals and Amy's dress 👌

I really love how You Can Do Anything sort of became Sonic's unofficial theme song back in the 90's after Sega of Japan lost the Masato Nakamura tracks. They even sneakily fused it with "It Doesn't Matter" for the Invincibility theme of Sonic Adventure.

Cool thing is we don't even have to speculate, we already have a perfect template for what a Sonic CD Movie could sound like:

There’s a very specific reason CD is so conducive to infinite rad gameplay clips. This here is the best explanation I’ve ever come across of what the game’s level design gets so right compared to other platformers. And it’s from a video with less than 300 views 😅

Unrelated but also hilarious: SEGA actually does have the Sonic OVA master and wanted to let Discotek do a full HD restoration/re-release. But sadly they've lost the paperwork for the music and voices, so it can basically never happen until they find them 😂

There's something I deeply love about animated films that are unabashedly sweet and childlike, while at the same time being quite dark, moody and tonal. Its that old Don Bluth idea of "showing children darkness helps them appreciate the light".

As a guy who's seen thousands of cartoons, I think its fair to say Sonic CD's intro is one of THE finest pieces of 2D animation ever made. It isn't just the insane production quality, but also how perfectly timed each moment is to the music. The guitar-riff at 0:37 SLAYS me 🔥
