What if I told you there is a tiny plant, hidden in the Nilgiri montane grasslands of the Western Ghats, that offers a masterclass in water conservation ? Hedyotis verticillaris is a remarkable plant whose rosette-shaped leaves trap and store water at their centre, creating miniature reservoirs in a landscape shaped by strong winds, mist and seasonal dryness. When summer dries the grasslands, wildlife including gaur, sambar and even the Nilgiri tahr are believed to sip from these tiny water stores. Every species therefore has a purpose. Every ecosystem has its own genius and we must learn to appreciate these wonders. #WorldEnvironmentDay #ClimateAction #NowForClimate Video: Supriya Sahu IAS #TNForest

And the epic journey begins again in all its glory. Three new travellers, Apapang (adult male) orange track, Alang (young female) Yellow track, and Ahu (adult female) Red Track, were satellite-tagged on 11th November 2025 as part of the Manipur Amur Falcon Tracking Project (Phase 2) by Wildlife Institute of India . In just days, Apapang has stunned trackers with an extraordinary non-stop flight, already cutting across central India and now skimming the Arabian Sea, poised for a 3,000 km oceanic crossing to Somalia, one of the most demanding journeys undertaken by any raptor on the planet. From the forests of Manipur to the vast African landscapes that await them, these tiny birds barely 150 grams continue to remind us of the sheer wonder of migration, and why India’s protection of stopover sites has become a global conservation story. What a wonder ! Credits Suresh Kumar #AmurFalcons #BirdMigration

A beautiful elephant family sleeps deep inside the Anamalai Tiger Reserve in Tamil Nadu, an extraordinary moment captured on camera. The young one gently rests its leg on an elder, seeking comfort, security and love. In the world of elephants, family is everything. And around them stands the forest silent, protective, eternal like a cradle holding life itself. On this International Day of Forests, this tender scene reminds us of a simple truth: if forests do not exist, nothing will remain. Nothing at all. Without forests, the world would be poorer, harsher, emptier. For elephants, for wildlife, for rivers, for people forests are life Incredible capture Dhanu Paran #InternationalDayofForest #forestday #InternationalDayofForest

The year ends on a heartwarming note for us at TN Forest Department, as our Foresters united a lost baby elephant with her mother and the herd after rescue in the Anamalai Tiger Reserve at Pollachi. The little calf was found searching for the mother when field teams spotted her. With the help of drones & experienced forest watchers the herd was located and the tiny calf was safely reunited. Teams are still on ground for monitoring. Kudos to Ramasubramanian, CF, Bhargava Teja FD, Range officer Manikantan and the entire team 👍 videos FD TN DIPR Tamil Nadu Forest Department MoEF&CC #elephantcalf

Long message, but trust me, it will be worth your time. Here is a remarkable update from Tamil Nadu’s tagged turtles. Early tracking data shows that some have already travelled to the Sri Lanka Dome, a little known ocean region where marine life gathers in extraordinary numbers. What makes this even more astonishing is that turtles migrating from Odisha are also expected to arrive in the same waters. Species from distant coastlines are converging at one natural marine hotspot shaped entirely by the rhythm of the ocean. The Sri Lanka Dome is created by powerful seasonal ocean processes that bring cool, nutrient-rich waters to the surface. This fuels plankton blooms and attracts turtles, fish, whales, seabirds, and countless other marine species. It is one of the most productive upwelling zones in the world’s oceans, beginning in May, reaching its peak in July, and declining in September. At that time, the turtles move out of the region and begin their return migration once again. These journeys reveal that turtles do not belong to one shoreline or one state. Their lives depend on a CONNECTED ocean, where feeding grounds, migration corridors, and breeding beaches all matter equally. Places like the Sri Lanka Dome remain unknown to most people, yet they are among the most important ecosystems in the Indian Ocean, like hidden engines that sustain marine biodiversity. The message from these turtles is clear. Conservation cannot stop at the beach. It must extend across borders and across seas because wildlife knows no boundaries 🙌🫶 With inputs from Dr Suresh Suresh Kumar

When I first visited the Irula Snake Catchers’ Cooperative Society on the outskirts of Chennai, I was awestruck. I learnt that even though they supply about 80% of India's Antivenom, they never catch snakes during their breeding season.Irulas treat snakes with care, affection, and profound respect . Each snake is released back into the wild carefully after venom extraction. On this World Snake Day, let us honour one of the most misunderstood guardians of our ecosystem, snakes. And let us also celebrate the communities which protect them. We need to replace fear of snakes with facts, myths with science and advance better understanding of snake conservation through trained snake handlers and Snakebite prevention and management #WorldSnakeDay #Irulas #SnakeConservation #OneHealth #Biodiversity #TNForest

The AI based surveillance mechanism set up by TN Forest Dept has started recording elephant movements on Railway tracks in pilot project mode in Madhukkarai at Coimbatore. The surveillance system has 12 towers fitted with both thermal and normal cameras, installed at strategic locations along the railway track for early detection of animal movement. The sensed data is automatically transferred to the control room set up on the site that processes the data collected from the field on real time basis and alerts loco pilots through calls and SMS. This area has seen several tragic elephant deaths due to collision with trains on these tracks. We are trying our best to prevent these collissions through use of modern technology which can be a big boon in preventing elephant deaths in such areas. Bird orchestra at its finest! 🎶 And hidden in this chatter is a beautiful life lesson. 🙌 At the foothills of the Anamalai Tiger Reserve, thousands of Chestnut-headed Bee-eaters paint the sky before coming together to roost. They gather for safety, stay connected through constant musical calls, and hunt more effectively as a group. Found along forest edges and open spaces, these vibrant birds also play an important ecological role by controlling insect populations. A perfect reminder that there is strength in togetherness. Incredible capture by Sriram Murali #TNForest

How many of us realise that above our heads exists an ancient living superhighway older than human memory ? Let that sink in Every year, the Bar-headed Goose flies from Central Asia to Tamil Nadu across the Himalayas at altitudes above 7,000 metres through air too thin for most living beings to survive. Often called the “Ballerina of the Skies”, the rare sighting of the Demoiselle Crane arriving from the Eurasian steppes at the Nemmeli Salt Pans in Tamil Nadu marked an important migratory record this year. Along the same Central Asian Flyway, Osprey return from Europe and coastal Asia, while Montagu’s Harrier travel from Russia and Kazakhstan to South India. The transcontinental, nonstop journey of three satellite-tagged Amur Falcon, Apapang, Alang and Ahu has filled us with wonder and awe. No borders. No maps. Yet they return to the same water bodies, grasslands and coasts with astonishing precision every season On this World Migratory Bird Day, these journeys remind us why protecting migratory habitats matters #WorldMigratoryBirdDay #CentralAsianFlyway #TamilNadu #MigratoryBirds courtesy Suresh Kumar Raveendran Natrajan, Karthick Ayappan, Baranidharan S

The Government of Tamil Nadu has declared snakebite a “Notifiable Disease” under the Tamil Nadu Public Health Act of 1939. Effective from November 6, 2024, all hospitals including private must report snakebite cases to improve data collection and resource allocation. This move aims to enhance treatment, infrastructure, and availability of Anti Snake Venom, reducing snakebite-related mortality, especially in rural areas following a One Health Approach. This aligns with National & WHO’s global strategy to halve snakebite deaths by 2030. Snakebite envenoming poses a serious global health risk, affecting 5.8 billion people, with 81,000-138,000 fatalities annually. Recognized by WHO as a neglected tropical disease, this will need efforts to focus on community education, prevention, conservation, and improved treatment Video Irular snake catchers Cooperative

A journey of a lifetime begins today! Fifteen mahouts and cavadies from the Mudumalai and Anamalai Tiger Reserves in Tamil Nadu have boarded their first-ever international flight to the Thai Elephant Conservation Center (TECC) in Lampang, Thailand. The objective of this visit is to learn and exchange best practices in elephant management and welfare. This marks the second batch to undertake this transformative journey, following the first group of 13 who visited TECC in 2023. This unique initiative is part of the Tamil Nadu Forest Department’s broader vision to professionalise elephant care by blending the traditional tribal wisdom of our mahouts with modern global standards. The visiting team comprises mahouts, cavadies, veterinary experts, forest rangers, and department officials. We wish our team a meaningful and empowering experience. #MahoutsOfTamilNadu #WildlifeConservation #Theppakadu #Kozhikamuthi #TNForest

Even in a bustling metropolis like Chennai, we see a beautiful miracle unfolding every year. Olive Ridley turtles come to Chennai beaches to nest every single year. This season, Chennai became Tamil Nadu’s largest nesting hub, protecting 74,143 eggs. What does it tell us ! The message is clear, wildlife can thrive in cities too, provided conservation is prioritised. This year across Tamil Nadu, 1,986 nests were protected, 2,29,668 eggs were conserved and 1,91,615 hatchlings were released into the sea through 52 hatcheries along the coast. Cuddalore protected 55,348 eggs and Nagapattinam 30,499, making this one of the strongest Olive Ridley conservation seasons in recent years. Most encouragingly, turtle mortality declined sharply from 1,575 last year to 786 this year a reduction of nearly 50 percent. Behind these numbers lies an extraordinary partnership. Forest frontline staff, the Students Sea Turtle Conservation Network, Wildlife Institute of India, researchers, volunteers, NGOs, the Fisheries Department, Indian Coast Guard, Marine Police and, most importantly, fishing communities worked together to protect these marine visitors. Conservation efforts included the distribution of 2,663 Turtle Excluder Devices (TEDs), 172 joint sea patrols, beach monitoring through the Turtle Guardian App, nest protection, clean-up drives and awareness programmes that reached over 23,000 fishermen. Satellite tagging of turtles has also helped us better understand their remarkable journeys. As this nesting season comes to a close, we bid farewell to these ancient travellers. The hatchlings released from our shores will now travel across vast oceans, only to return years later to the very same beaches where they were born. #WorldEnvironmentDay #Turtles #TNForest
