Three new travellers, Apapang (adult male) orange track, Alang (young female) Yellow track, and Ahu (adult female) Red Track, were satellite-tagged on 11th November 2025 as part of the Manipur Amur Falcon Tracking Project (Phase 2) by Wildlife Institute of India . In just days, Apapang has stunned trackers with an extraordinary non-stop flight, already cutting across central India and now skimming the Arabian Sea, poised for a 3,000 km oceanic crossing to Somalia,one of the most demanding journeys undertaken by any raptor on the planet. From the forests of Manipur to the vast African landscapes that await them, these tiny birds barely 150 grams continue to remind us of the sheer wonder of migration, and why India’s protection of stopover sites has become a global conservation story. The year ends on a heartwarming note for us at TN Forest Department, as our Foresters united a lost baby elephant with her mother and the herd after rescue in the Anamalai Tiger Reserve at Pollachi. The little calf was found searching for the mother when field teams spotted her. With the help of drones & experienced forest watchers the herd was located and the tiny calf was safely reunited. Teams are still on ground for monitoring. When I first visited the Irula Snake Catchers’ Cooperative Society on the outskirts of Chennai, I was awestruck. I learnt that even though they supply about 80% of India's Antivenom, they never catch snakes during their breeding season.Irulas treat snakes with care, affection, and profound respect . Each snake is released back into the wild carefully after venom extraction. On this World Snake Day, let us honour one of the most misunderstood guardians of our ecosystem, snakes. And let us also celebrate the communities which protect them. The AI based surveillance mechanism set up by TN Forest Dept has started recording elephant movements on Railway tracks in pilot project mode in Madhukkarai at Coimbatore. The surveillance system has 12 towers fitted with both thermal and normal cameras, installed at strategic locations along the railway track for early detection of animal movement. The sensed data is automatically transferred to the control room set up on the site that processes the data collected from the field on real time basis and alerts loco pilots through calls and SMS. This area has seen several tragic elephant deaths due to collision with trains on these tracks. We are trying our best to prevent these collissions through use of modern technology which can be a big boon in preventing elephant deaths in such areas. Look ! Indian Elephants have finally arrived in New York. Titled as the 'Great Elephant Migration' a travelling herd of 100 stunning life size elephant sculptures have reached NYC. These elephant sculptures have been made by local tribal artisans from Gudalur in Nilgiris, Tamil Nadu, from the invasive lantana species. The 'Great Elephant Migration' is travelling around the world spreading the message of coexistence & creating awareness about the need to remove invasives like lantana camara from forests to save wildlife. Each elephant has been created by the Coexistence Collective, a community of 200 indigenous artisans from Bettakurumba, Paniya, Kattunayakan and Soliga communities of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, Tamil Nadu. Early tracking data shows that some have already travelled to the Sri Lanka Dome, a little known ocean region where marine life gathers in extraordinary numbers. What makes this even more astonishing is that turtles migrating from Odisha are also expected to arrive in the same waters. Species from distant coastlines are converging at one natural marine hotspot shaped entirely by the rhythm of the ocean. The Sri Lanka Dome is created by powerful seasonal ocean processes that bring cool, nutrient-rich waters to the surface. This fuels plankton blooms and attracts turtles, fish, whales, seabirds, and countless other marine species. Some fascinating news on species recovery from Tamil Nadu’s mountains. Nilgiri Tahr numbers are rising. The latest synchronized survey has estimated 1,364 Tahrs in Tamil Nadu, up from 1,303 in 2025 and 1,031 in 2024, a powerful sign that conservation and habitat restoration efforts across the Western Ghats are working. Over four days, 858 field personnel surveyed 177 habitat blocks across 14 forest divisions, trekking more than 3,200 km through rugged mountain terrain. For the first time, the Varudai mobile app was used, bringing technology and science together for more effective monitoring. Fifteen mahouts and cavadies from the Mudumalai and Anamalai Tiger Reserves in Tamil Nadu have boarded their first-ever international flight to the Thai Elephant Conservation Center (TECC) in Lampang, Thailand. The objective of this visit is to learn and exchange best practices in elephant management and welfare. This marks the second batch to undertake this transformative journey, following the first group of 13 who visited TECC in 2023. This unique initiative is part of the Tamil Nadu Forest Department’s broader vision to professionalise elephant care by blending the traditional tribal wisdom of our mahouts with modern global standards. The visiting team comprises mahouts, cavadies, veterinary experts, forest rangers, and department officials. A big shout out to the Coimbatore Forest Division team,Tamil Nadu which worked 24*7 to revive a sick wild Female elephant found lying in lateral recumbency position unable to get up. It was heartbreaking to see her 3 months old baby roaming around her in distress. The team has lifted the elephant with a crane to make her stand and provided all necessary treatment. Mother elephant is doing well and her baby is happily feeding. Though the elephant is doing well,we need to watch out for her health. From despair to hope and from struggle to triumph, this is the incredible story of a wild elephant mother's fight for survival backed by a dedicated and professional team of foresters and vets from Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu Forest Department .The mother elephant was found sick and lying on ground with her 3 months old baby roaming around her in confusion and distress.The team consulted experts and vets and successfully lifted her with the help of a crane. She was kept supported by the crane for three days while being treated by Vets. Her baby joined the herd and other siblings roaming in the nearby forests visiting the mother in the night. Thanks to the treatment,she gained enough strength and was released to freedom in the wild today. We are monitoring her to keep an eye on her well being. “ ஓடுங்க ஓடுங்க தங்கப்பிள்ளை...” ( Run, run, golden child ) These are the affectionate words of a fisherman as he calls out in Tamil while gently releasing a juvenile dugong, accidentally caught in his fishing net, back into the sea in Pudukkottai, Tamil Nadu. What makes this beautiful moment truly unforgettable is the story behind it. Years of sustained awareness, engagement and trust-building with local fisherfolk, supported by incentive mechanisms introduced with the help of District Collectors, is encouraging communities to actively participate in conservation. From 2023 till date 21 Dugongs have been rescued. The restoration of approximately 3 acres of seagrass the lifeline of dugongs is further strengthening their habitat. This goes to show that the future of conservation will ultimately depend on how meaningfully local communities are involved in protecting wildlife and the ecosystems they share. An 800-kg wild gaur walked more than 300 km across Tamil Nadu, from the forests of Trichy to the shores of Pamban. What followed was one of the most complex wildlife operations undertaken in the state. After a month of tracking the animal through human-dominated landscapes, and when all efforts to guide it back to suitable habitat failed, the Tamil Nadu Forest Department carried out the state’s first long-distance gaur translocation. Nearly 100 personnel, including expert veterinarians and trackers, worked in challenging coastal terrain to safely tranquilize, transport and release the animal in a Reserve Forest in Dindigul after a 13-hour capture operation and a 9-hour journey. Translocating a gaur is among the most challenging wildlife management tasks. This successful operation marks a significant milestone in conflict mitigation and wildlife management, while providing valuable lessons for future human-wildlife conflict situations. As a beautiful family of elephants crosses the railway track at Madukkarai in Coimbatore, an AI-powered early warning system by the Tamil Nadu Forest Department ensures their safe passage, a sight that fills the heart with warmth. Hello Chennai here comes your third Mangrove Magic ! Along the Buckingham Canal, the Chennai Forest Division has planted 20,000 mangrove seedlings across 20 hectares during 2025–26. What you see here is the fishbone structure to support healthy tidal flow. 8 main fishbone canals have been created with 8 feeder canals and 186 distribution channels. This is supported by Team ICICI Bank under their CSR initiative This effort builds on the earlier phases wherein 12,500 mangrove seedlings were planted near Kazhipattur along the Buckingham Canal in 2024–25, with 2,500 associate coastal species, followed by 5,000 mangroves planted at the Battle of Adyar Island estuary. The year ends on a heartwarming note for us at TN Forest Department, as our Foresters united a lost baby elephant with her mother and the herd after rescue in the Anamalai Tiger Reserve at Pollachi. The little calf was found searching for the mother when field teams spotted her. With the help of drones & experienced forest watchers the herd was located and the tiny calf was safely reunited. Teams are still on ground for monitoring. The recent AI Impact Summit hosted by India recently brings focus on practical applications of AI. At Madukkarai in Tamil Nadu, a simple AI-based Elephant Detection System has enabled 8,679 safe elephant crossings in a little more than 2 years. Incidently it has also recorded 100 leopard alerts, 560 wild gaur alerts, and captured 14,888 deer alerts across two vulnerable railway stretches, protecting precious wildlife. In Gudalur in the Nilgiris, another AI system is working at the landscape level to generate real-time alerts for the local community, and in Hosur too, an AI system is helping elephants. These systems may not be perfect, no system ever is, but the foremost goal is protection. A big shout-out to Loco Pilot Das and Assistant Loco Pilot Umesh Kumar of the 15959 Kamrup Express for their swift and heroic action on 16th October in saving a herd of about 60 elephants crossing the railway tracks between Habaipur and Lamsakhang by applying emergency brakes. Pilots were alerted through a Artificial Intelligence based Detection System which comprehensively covers the track. This incident spotlights the importance of technology to prevent such near-misses. Tamil Nadu’s AI-based surveillance system implemented by us in Madukkarai, Coimbatore has also successfully prevented elephant-train collisions through 24/7 monitoring with thermal cameras and real-time alerts. Implementing similar solutions across vulnerable tracks can significantly reduce fatalities and enhance coexistence between wildlife and human infrastructure. Along the coast of Tamil Nadu, in the waters of Ramanathapuram, particularly around Pamban, Keelakarai and Ervadi over 300 traditionally skilled fisherwomen dive into the sea everyday to earn for their families. Setting out in groups of eight to ten by boat before sunrise, they skin-dive up to depths of 4–5 metres, hand-picking seaweed from the seabed and gathering it in mesh bags known locally as kacha. By the time they return to shore around 1 p.m., each woman brings back 10–12 bags of seaweed, with each bag weighing 20–25 kilograms. Their labour sustains their families supporting children’s education, and household needs. Government of Tamil Nadu, under the TN-SHORE Project, is designing a Village Enterprise Model working with them to strengthen their enterprise, build value chains and empower them economically. Our satellite-tagged Olive Ridley turtle Kayal, released at Besant Nagar, has returned not once, but three times to nest along the Chennai coast, laying 389 eggs in a single season. She travelled south and then chose Chennai again. Another turtle, Megalai, returned twice, laying 211 eggs. Science now confirms what we long believed, nesting-site fidelity is real. The Tamil Nadu Forest Department has established 49 turtle hatcheries across 10 coastal districts. So far, 1,150 nests have been secured, protecting 1,35,304 eggs, and 477 hatchlings have safely made their way to the sea. Yes, challenges remain. We are monitoring the coastline 24×7 through our State-level Turtle Task Force. Elephants, gaurs, deer and countless other species are returning to areas once overrun by invasive plants as the TN Forest Department, GOTN continues one of India’s largest ecosystem restoration efforts. More than 40,000 hectares of Forests have been restored, including nearly 31,000 hectares cleared of lantana. The true measure of success, however, is not the number of hectares cleared but the return of life. Landscapes once choked by invasive species are witnessing the revival of native habitats, with large mammals and ground-nesting birds reclaiming these restored spaces. The removed biomass is converted into briquettes. Around 120 MT of briquettes have been supplied to local tea factories creating a circular climate solution This pioneering initiative advances two global goals simultaneously: biodiversity recovery through ecosystem restoration and climate action through sustainable carbon management.
