The Ka-27 uses a complex coaxial rotor system to eliminate the need for a tail rotor. It has two three-bladed rotors mounted on the same axis. They rotate in opposite directions, so their torque reactions largely cancel. But both rotors still need collective and cyclic pitch control. Automatic Helicopter Landings on Naval Ships Landing a helicopter on a moving naval ship is one of the most demanding tasks in aviation. The flight deck continuously changes its position, attitude, and velocity with the sea, requiring precise relative positioning throughout the approach. Composite manufacturing is gradually changing that approach by producing larger integrated structures with fewer joints. Thermoplastic composites can be reheated and welded after manufacturing, allowing large fuselage sections to be joined without relying entirely on rivets or adhesive bonding. The objective is not simply to replace aluminium. It is to reduce assembly time, simplify manufacturing, and support higher production rates while maintaining structural performance. The demonstrator shown here measures approximately 8 metres long and was built to evaluate automated manufacturing, welding, inspection, and assembly of large thermoplastic composite aircraft structures. The demonstrator was developed under the Airbus-led Multifunctional Fuselage Demonstrator (MFFD) programme by a European aerospace consortium.
