When her own life was falling apart, she became a safe place for animals with nowhere else to go. 14 years ago, Ganga Maa was going through a painful separation from her husband, who drank and beat her. Then a tiny kitten fell from her terrace. She rescued her. Her children, Ridham and Ridhima, grew deeply attached to her. When the cat died, another stray dog came into their lives. He was just 3–4 years old, injured, bleeding and trapped at the bottom of an abandoned well in Bahandei village, Dhenkanal, Odisha. But he wasn’t left there. As soon as the elephant was spotted, the Dhenkanal Forest Division’s Rapid Response Team rushed in. Forest staff, Fire Division personnel and local villagers joined hands to bring him out safely. Veterinary personnel immediately provided primary treatment before the young elephant was shifted to the Elephant Rescue Centre for further care and observation. One frightened animal. One dangerous situation. And an entire community that chose to step up.
