One of the best ways to hit the ball... straighter is by focusing on the extension of your right arm through the strike. When the trail arm straightens, it delivers the club squarely and helps your body release its stored energy in the right direction. Too many golfers collapse the right arm early or “chicken wing” the left, which causes pulls, slices, and inconsistency. Instead, think of the right arm extending down the target line after impact—just like Hogan, Snead, and so many classic swingers did. That extension keeps the clubface square, compresses the ball, and sends it flying on a rope. Work on this move and you’ll be amazed how much straighter your shots become.show more

A hallmark of Lee Trevino’s swing was right arm... extension. I studied this move with Tim Brantley, and it completely changed the way I think about the release. Here I’m working on allowing my right hand to thrust the handle forward and around through impact rather than trying to “hit” at the ball. It’s a great feel to try because it encourages the club to release naturally while maintaining lag and compression. This is true of most all the better throwers, especially those with quick transfers. WHAT THE BEST DO 1) They make 1st contact close to full extension with the glove retreating into scap load as they are catching the pitch. This makes for a more rhythmic & tension free load. They do not catch the ball deep close to their chest protector. 2) The ball & glove separation occurs at the sternum or slightly below. 3) The ball is deflected/dropped/exchanged down out of the glove in to an open & supinated hand & not ripped up out out of the glove to a position behind the head.show more

Man in the Middle A simple drill that goes back to childhood. 2 passers, 15 ft apart. No overhead passes. Defender must slap the ball to start each on-ball rep. If they force a deflection, errant pass, or movement from the receiver → passer is in the middle on defense. #3. Fake Game 1v1 with only 1 or 0 dribbles. Forces defenders to pressure and disrupt without getting blown by. If they sag too much, they give space for an easier shot or downhill free dribble. If they pressure, they learn to force wide and force tough shots. We call it HEAT. Every defender's heat is different, but everyone needs to impact the ball in some way. A 62 year old man comes to OPD with... a simple complaint. Doctor, my left hand does not stay still. I watch him quietly before examining him. When his left hand rests on the chair, there is a slow, coarse tremor. When he stretches his arms forward, the tremor continues. When he is asked to touch his nose, the tremor markedly increases as the finger approaches the target. This is not a single tremor. This is rest, postural, and intention tremor together. Then comes the old history that changes everything. Eight months ago, he had a right thalamic hemorrhage. There was weakness initially, which slightly improved. The tremor appeared only months later. I had the chipping / pitching yips for a few years and was a complete mess. Head moving down & leaning back to the right shifts the low point of the club to an earlier spot. Club hits the ground too early. When you look at great pitchers they are usually shifting a little left, and slightly extending up after impact. Not dipping down and back. Imagine standing side on to the target and tossing to the landing spot with your trail arm. The dip down and knee buckle is completely at odds with how you would move. But we had a very interesting little discussion in China about something that nobody in the west thinks exists in China: competition!
