What could happen if war is officially declared instead of a "special military operation" ("SMO")? Today the supporters of the military dictatorship in Sudan,... dressed in military fatigues and chanting a pro-war slogan (جيش واحد شعب واحد), gathered outside Chatham House in London to slander and intimidate a visiting Sudanese politician who opposes them. Some of the protesters even dressed up their children in military fatigues. There was heavy police presence as the protest became unruly. Take note, Counter Terrorism Policing,Metropolitan Police. There is a straight line of continuity between the regime in Sudan today and the previous one that hosted Osama bin Laden for five years, attempted to assassinate Egypt’s president, and waged a 30-year jihad in South Sudan and the Nuba Mountains. On social media, I've seen clear examples of violent incitement by Sudanese residents of the UK. The right to peaceful protest is essential in a democracy; but it’s noteworthy that these protesters chose symbols of violence. The Sudanese people deserve great sympathy and support for their sufferings at the hands of the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary-turned-rebel group that is currently battling the military. I think many in the West would support (or have supported) efforts to end this war and pressure the RSF and its main international sponsor, the United Arab Emirates. But these protesters don't want peace; they want war and more violence, not only in Sudan but even in the streets of Europe, if that helps them to achieve their war aims. Very recently, I wrote that one of the reasons for restricting the internet and social media in Russia is preparation for mobilization. Yes, there is an anti-drone logic behind it, but it seems much more like part of a stricter mobilization model: first, the Russian state suppresses communications and limits access to keep people within a controlled digital environment, and only afterward will it conduct a new wave of mobilization with less chaos and less room for resistance. Russia is preparing for a larger war and a broader mobilization. For the process to go smoothly, the regime needs to reduce information leaks, make summonses digital and unavoidable, and narrow the space for evasion and escape. That's why Russia has already launched electronic summonses - to make it harder for men to avoid conscription. We don't know exactly where the Kremlin will deploy the next wave of cannon fodder. But we do know that Putin is already expanding the army to 1.5 million active personnel, and the Kremlin has openly justified this by citing threats on the Western flank and the need to create new structures in the northwest.show more

Slow Progress is the New Reality of Modern Wars... There are many people commenting on Russian difficulties and coming up with numerous reasons for their alleged collapse. I absolutely do not see any collapse; on the contrary, Russia has already normalized a state of war in Ukraine, which boosts its economic and industrial growth. The difficulties faced by Russia today are the same as at the beginning of the war, with soldiers having to spend up to half of their initial salaries on their own equipment, delays in pensions, and a series of other problems that are mirrored on the Ukrainian side, even with all the support from allies. The war today is much less lethal than it was months ago, and both Russian and Ukrainian losses have significantly decreased during this phase. Lethality has fallen, but Russian advances persist. And why are they slow? Is it a Ukrainian tactic? No. They are slow because they are accompanied by the deployment of communication infrastructure like signal repeaters for drones, the advancement of artillery guided by drones, maneuvers using FAB and more recently ODAB bombs against Ukrainian drone operators' facilities, infiltration by reconnaissance teams, saboteurs, and a series of protocols they have developed. That conventional war with rapid advances no longer exists, and in the context of a battlefield dominated by drones, it is unlikely to return. Modern wars will have slow progress, as seen in the attacks and counter-attacks of the Russians and Ukrainians in this war.
