In this movement, there has been only one name they have called for, and only one transitional leadership the Iranian people have fought for: Reza Pahlavi. Now that doesn’t mean every Iranian is a monarchist, and it doesn’t mean “restoring monarchy” either. If fact, Pahlavi himself has called for a transition to democracy and has only ever called for a transition leadership. Many people are calling for Pahlavi today who did not support the Shah in the past. The world is still talking over them. Instead of listening to the Iranian people, the international media and multiple governments around the world have consistently proposed plan after plan, actively ignoring the will of the Iranian people. They have minimized and in some cases even mocked the Crown Prince, when he and he alone has the ear of the people on the ground. There have been well funded and coordinated efforts against the Crown Prince attempting to cast doubt on his popularity with the Iranian public and to spread rumors that anyone who supports him as a traditional leader is “restoring monarchy”. He has been accused of all sorts of absurdities from being an “Israeli agent” to being asked to answer for political decisions of his father that have nothing to do with him and still he has maintained the respect and support of the Iranian people. A drone strike hit a British air base in Cyprus overnight, causing limited damage and no casualties, Cypriot and British officials said on Monday. Has the regime in Tehran heard of NATO? The UK is a NATO member-state. Several U.S. warplanes crashed this morning in #Kuwait. But all crew members thankfully survived. Iran's regime is trying to widen the conflict to put pressure on the U.S. to curtail the Operation Epic Fury and distract from attacking Iranian soil. But given these attacks, Iran's regime is effectively triggering a coalition of countries to join the U.S. and #Israel or at least support them. This time, the initial driving force has not primarily been cultural or human rights slogans such as "Woman, Life, Freedom" (as in 2022), but rather an economic shock. People are joining the protests because of rapid impoverishment, price increase, and a growing sense that the state has lost control over basic economic rules. The main trigger is a currency collapse. On the "open" (effectively parallel) market in late December, the US dollar was valued at roughly 1.39-1.42 million rials, while inflation in December reached over 40% in some estimates. For ordinary families, this means one simple thing: wages and savings are losing value faster than people can adapt, and basic purchases are becoming increasingly unaffordable. The protests were the largest in Tehran, particularly in commercial districts linked to major markets and urban trade. Notably, a key form of pressure has been not only street demonstrations but also merchants’ strikes - mass shop closures and an effective shutdown of trade. Such actions are harder to neutralize through targeted arrests, as they immediately affect urban life and the economy. Within days, the protest wave started spreading to other cities and reached parts of the university sector as well. Students and young people have taken up economic demands and quickly moved on to political questions about the accountability of those in power. The authorities’ response has been mixed. On the one hand, the government has publicly spoken of readiness for dialogue with representatives of the protesters and the trading community. Even if these groups have not always been at the forefront of political protests, they serve as a sensitive barometer of legitimacy. When the "bazaar" shuts down, it signals not only discontent, but also doubt about the state’s ability to maintain basic order. Alongside the internal crisis, external risks are also mounting. Sanctions continue to narrow Iran’s financial and technological room for maneuver, while signals are emerging in the media about the possibility of a new round of coercive pressure on Iran in 2026 - particularly following discussions within the Israel-US-Iran triangle. ❓ What could come next? Four trajectories appear most realistic, and they may even overlap. ▪️ First, controlled de-escalation: the authorities attempt to "cool things down" through targeted economic measures and negotiations with the trading community. This would work only if the exchange rate and prices stabilize. ▪️ Second, wave-like protests: smaller in scale but more frequent and more radical, with repeated flare-ups across different cities and sectors. ▪️ Third, harsh repression: a tightening of the security apparatus and severe sentences, which may temporarily suppress mobilization but typically accumulate deferred anger. ▪️ Fourth, external escalation: which could either temporarily shift the domestic agenda or, conversely, sharply worsen economic conditions and bring people back onto the streets even faster. ‼️ Iran is one of Russia’s authoritarian partners, which raises a logical question: what consequences could the current crisis have for Russian-Iranian relations? If the situation in Iran deteriorates but the regime as a whole survives, the partnership with Russia is likely to be preserved or even strengthened. For Tehran, Moscow remains one of the few major partners available under sanctions and diplomatic isolation; for Moscow, Iran is an important component of its "anti-sanctions" infrastructure and political rear. In the short term, this is unlikely to significantly weaken Russia’s position. The most critical military component for Russia - the Shahed/Geran drone line - has already been largely integrated into Russian domestic production, meaning that a direct disruption of Iranian supplies would probably not be a turning point. More tangible risks for Russia emerge in the medium term if Iran enters a phase of governance paralysis or prolonged instability that undermines its ability to honor agreements. In that case, logistics and infrastructure projects would be hit first - especially those Russia views as alternative sanction-era routes, including the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) and its critical segments. In such a scenario, Moscow would lose the Iranian vector for trade and transit and would face a less predictable partner in technology transfers and financial settlements. The most ambiguous scenario is one in which Iran’s deterioration is linked to a new external escalation (strikes or war). The effects for Russia could be mixed: on the one hand, heightened risks in the Persian Gulf often push oil prices higher, potentially boosting Russian oil revenues; on the other hand, war increases the likelihood of tighter sanctions enforcement and maritime controls, complicating both Iranian and Russian sanction-evasion schemes and disrupting logistics. In other words, "deterioration in Iran" does not guarantee a weakening of Russia, but it does increase environmental instability. Moscow may gain from higher energy prices, but lose in terms of partner predictability and transport capacity. ‼️ Russia’s position would weaken most sharply in a scenario where a new leadership in Tehran moves toward normalization with the West or at least distances itself from Moscow. In that case, the entire "anti-sanctions" framework - financial settlements, technological cooperation, and joint projects - would come under pressure, including the North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) and its key Rasht-Astara segment, in which Russia is investing both financially and politically. For Russia, this would mean the loss of an important (though not the only) route and partner infrastructure in the region. The Bengaluru city police in a joint operation with... Puducherry police arrested techie J Kenneth, accused of murdering the parents and sister of his girlfriend Shwetha. Kenneth was spotted by Puducherry police when he was drinking at a wine shop, and on seeing the cops, Kenneth started running. Chasing him for over 200 meters, ASI Ramalingam from Puducherry police department, succeeded in nabbing Kenneth. However, Ramalingam and few other cops were injured as Kenneth assaulted them. From the same place, cops had arrested Shwetha two days back. Both had fled the city after stabbing Shwetha's parents and sister Supriya to death inside the flat of an apartment in Seegehalli, KR Puram. Shwetha is in seven-day-police custody. Police will produce Kenneth before the judge at latter's home-office in National Games Village, Koramangala by evening. The victims were identified as Somasundar (52), his wife Muthulakshmi (48), and their 19-year-old daughter Supriya. According to police, the accused allegedly carried out the murders following a dispute that escalated over financial issues linked to Shwetha's unpaid bank loans, which had reportedly crossed Rs 30 lakh. Investigators believe the financial burden, along with the couple's strained circumstances, played a key role in the incident. Police said Shwetha and Kenneth, both engineering graduates and former classmates, had been in a live-in relationship for over a year, which they had kept hidden from their families. The relationship came under strain after bank recovery notices related to Shwetha's loans began reaching her family's residence in Marathahalli. In the days leading up to the incident, Shwetha's mother reportedly visited the couple's apartment after receiving the notices, followed by her father and younger sister. Police said an argument broke out over the loan issue, which soon escalated into violence inside the apartment. Neighbours reported hearing screams around 10 pm on the night of the incident, after which Somasundar was found bleeding on the staircase. Following the killings, Shwetha allegedly fled the scene, prompting a massive manhunt that led to her arrest earlier. Kenneth's arrest in Puducherry marks another major development in the ongoing investigation. According to Pausanias, “Alexander, the son of Philippos, founded the present city after a dream. Rumour has it he was hunting atop Pagos Hill. On his return from the hunt, he arrived at temple of the Nemesis, and decided to take a nap under a tree that had grown out of the spring in front of it. Nemesis came in a dream and commanded him to build a city here, and relocate the people of Smyrna there.” He then adds, “The Smyrnians sent envoys to Claros (Apollo) to learn what he thought about the situation. This time, God answered, "Those to dwell in Pagos beyond the sacred Meles shall be happy beyond their wildest dreams." Smyrna Agora located in the heart of historical city center of İzmir, Smyrna Agora is one of the world’s largest of its kind. Excavation work on the site first began in 1933. In 2007, Assoc. Prof. Akın Ersoy (of İzmir Katip Çelebi University) and his team of archaeologists revisited the Agora and have remained there ever since – with permission of the Republic of Türkiye Ministry of Culture and Tourism. So far, they have uncovered a west portico, a basilica, a Bouleuterion, a mosaic hall, a roman bath, and a building from the Ottoman era that surrounds its courtyard. It was founded at the end of the 4th Century BC immediately following the reign of Alexander the Great. It served as Smyrna’s administrative, political, and judicial centre, as well as main hub of commerce and trade. Surrounded by porticos, it used to contain monuments meant for important occasions and agreements, altars for pagan religious ceremonies, statues honouring prominent local figures, exedras with marble seat, and both a temple and altar for the city’s patron deity. A major earthquake destroyed the Agora in 178 AD. Shortly thereafter, Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius set about rebuilding it. Nearly all surviving remains belong to that second period. Its overall character only remained intact until 7th Century. Over time, it began to lose its lustre as Smyrna shrank. Its courtyard moreover ended up being used as cemetery during Middle and Late Byzantine alongside Ottoman Empires. Ottomans moreover converted any surrounding buildings into dwellings – a tradition that would last until the end of 20th Century. Smyrna/İzmir has remained a major Mediterranean port city since antiquity.
