This is real gun camera footage from a P-51... Mustang, chasing a German Bf 109 down to the treetops until it goes down in flames. The American pilot flying it, Lt John Kirla, shot down five enemy planes in a single day, becoming an ace in one mission. This footage captures one of his victories over a Bf 109. This is his story.. From Trainee to the Yoxford Boys John Kirla was not a born fighter ace. He was an ordinary young American who had come up through flight training in Texas, graduating at the start of 1944. He learned his trade on trainers, moved up to fighters, and got just 15 hours in the P-51 Mustang before being sent to England as a replacement pilot. He joined the 362nd Fighter Squadron of the 357th Fighter Group, a unit based at Leiston that was already becoming a legend. The 357th was the first group in the Eighth Air Force fully equipped with the Mustang, and it would go on to produce more aces than any other fighter group in the Eighth, including Chuck Yeager and Bud Anderson. Kirla was the newest pilot in a squadron already filled with experienced aces. His job was to escort American bombers deep into Germany and protect them from the Luftwaffe. On November 27 1944, he got the day that would define him. Five Victories in One Mission That morning the 357th ran headlong into a massive swarm of German fighters trying to get at the bombers. Kirla's flight dropped their fuel tanks and dived straight into the middle of it. Almost immediately, the fight became a swirling, low-level brawl of Mustangs, Messerschmitts, and Focke-Wulfs twisting across the sky. Kirla picked out his first target and opened fire, and from that moment he did not stop hunting. In his own account, he spotted a Bf 109 that was attacking an American bomber. He went after it, closed to just 30 yards, and when the German threw his fighter into a tight barrel roll straight down toward the ground, Kirla stayed glued to his tail and, in his words, clobbered him all over until he went down. An Ace in a Day He kept finding more. Again and again through that wild, sprawling fight, Kirla latched onto an enemy aircraft and did not let go. At one point he watched a German fighter shoot down one of his fellow Mustang pilots right in front of him, and closed in for revenge. As he described it afterward, he opened fire, saw pieces start to fly off the enemy aircraft, and watched it fall out of the sky like a leaf drifting to the ground. Rather than breaking away and climbing back to safety, Kirla chased his targets down low, following them almost to the ground, the fighters weaving over villages and treetops until the enemy aircraft finally went down. By the time the fight was over, John Kirla had shot down five German aircraft in a single mission. He had become an ace in a day, one of the relatively few American fighter pilots to achieve that in a single mission. The Mustang That Changed the Air War The Mustang was the aircraft that made days like Kirla's possible. The P-51 combined long range, high speed, and deadly firepower, and it could follow the bombers all the way to their targets and fight the German fighters on equal or better terms. By the end of the war, P-51 groups had claimed close to 5,000 enemy aircraft shot down, about half of all American air-to-air kills in the European theater. Kirla's own group, the 357th, became the top-scoring Mustang group in the Eighth Air Force. Flying one of the finest escort fighters of the war, men like Kirla helped turn the tide of the air war over Germany. Managed to get out of Dubai. The following is... my personal opinion & experience 🇦🇪 Everything went quite seamless. Careem cabs operate normally. The airport is extremely well organized, considering the circumstances. The world has changed since Saturday and unfortunately, the country I moved to 3 years ago has been under heavy attacks. Why? No one really knows. However, I find it extremely disturbing that most media - including our beloved CT - exploits that serious situation to take cheap shots at Dubai and people who moved here. There are real families and hard working people affected. Most are scared or feel extremely uncomfortable. It's a traumatizing experience to hear missile interceptions right above your house. Nothing I wish for any human to ever experience, no matter if you pay 0% or 50% taxes. I don't even know what the link between those two things should be?? If anything, it proves that the UAE cares about their people and is able to protect its residents. Even at 0% income tax. Dubai was not known for it's strong military. It was always portrayed to be bling-bling golden steaks and influencers. But the UAE has shown the entire world that it can defend 1,000+ drones and 200+ missiles from a direct neighbor. That is impressive, whether you love or hate the UAE. Many countries would likely not be able to absorb that. So, if anything: Dubai and the UAE have demonstrated that the system works. I have lived in multiple countries around the world and the UAE is by far the most capable of handling crisis. Why did I leave Dubai then? Because it's not a situation I want to be in. Missile interceptions and drone explosions are no joke. Besides the danger that debris could hit your roof, there's an incredible intensity in the air. Most describe it as "intense calmness". While the Government managed to keep everyone from panicking, it's impossible for everyone to stay fully calm. And you can feel that in the day to day. The first night I got virtually no sleep. The night of my departure neither. I haven't left my house at all after the attacks started. But I'm out now. I really hope that leaving the country wasn't necessary, and that I will be able to come back to Dubai as soon as possible. And no, I'm not paid to say this, nor did I sign anything. Maybe part of the truth why no one who lives in Dubai has bad things to say about it is because it's one of the rare places on earth where people actually trust the Government and respect them? Not only for creating wealth and understanding business, but for caring and communicating in a way most other countries are simply incapable of. Anyways, I guess the point of this post is to 1) Tell everyone in Dubai that it's possible to leave right now. I know many people are very scared and want to get out. Be persistent with the airline if they cancel your flight and push hard to get rebooked on the next available one. And maybe choose a destination that isn't Europe, considering most of these flights are overbooked already and impossible to get on. 2) Dubai's self defense is impressive and we should acknowledge that. At least this one time, let's not derail into irrelevant discussions but show respect to the leaders + express empathy for those affected. 3) As an expat living in Dubai, I can still feel proud of my home country and do not have to choose. This isn't a black and white situation. Dubai is a melting pot of cultures and great place for Business. Other countries have better nature, social life or other things. It's also up to individual preference. 4) If you hate Dubai, yalla you don't need to live here, visit nor speak about it. Enjoy the place you live in and focus on your own. No need to feel triggered and take cheap shots at hard working people and families that are currently under heavy missile attacks. One final thing that really became clear to me this week is that after all, safety, health and living in freedom are absolutely priceless. The genial sanctions! For those who said that factories... like the Chinese ones exist in the West, no, they don't. The Chinese are using full-cycle automation in factories that even lack basic lighting. And this is working for cars as well as for missiles, as I have shown here before. Now comes the most interesting part. A large portion of the automation machinery is still European, but this dependence has been decreasing, and today it’s less than 40%. The West used to dominate the market for Chinese chips, industrial machinery, aviation, and various other sectors. What was the big idea? Impose sanctions on the Chinese and force them to develop all these technologies so they no longer need to buy from the West. Genius, don’t you think? Today, the Chinese are developing four commercial aviation engines simultaneously, with at least one already flying in testing phase, and three other engine projects for cargo aviation based on Russian models. This was a market that was entirely owned by the West. Another issue that will need to be addressed sooner or later is whether there will be tariffs on products coming from fully roboticized factories. Some might say this is punishing efficiency. But what’s the point of efficiency if no one has a job and can spend? An extremely efficient model that creates unemployment beyond its borders? The great-circle route pulls us toward Greenland’s 🇬🇱 ice and the far northern reaches of Canada 🇨🇦, places so vast and sparsely inhabited that distance still feels absolute. Town names like Iqualuit, Yellow Knife, and Crazy Woman, all part of this northern adventure. From altitude, the scale is humbling: ice, rock, forest, and very little else. There’s method behind today’s routing though. Over the North Atlantic, aircraft don’t simply choose a line and go. We fly along daily-published “roads in the sky”, tracks that are repositioned every 24 hours to account for the atmosphere’s moving parts. Eastbound traffic rides the jet stream’s tailwinds for speed and efficiency; westbound flights step away from that river of air, trading distance for fewer headwinds and a smoother, more economical crossing. The sky itself is the variable, and the routes adapt to it. It’s a reminder that aviation is less about conquering nature and more about cooperating with it, listening to the winds, respecting geography, and letting physics do its quiet work. After 4 years, I travelled by air with Saudia.... Honestly, after my personal tragedy I was not willing for travelling or flying. But Saudia made it easier, step by step. From boarding, the crew greeted us with dates, nuts & Zamzam - that small touch of warmth matters a lot. Then came blankets, pillows, headphones… and I was amazed to find WiFi at 35,000 ft. It made the journey less heavy on my heart. Landed at Jeddah Airport and the staff were extra kind to Pakistanis. The airport felt spotless, travel-friendly, full of international brands on sale and yummy food options everywhere. I saw mostly foreigners on transit flights. Sitting so close to “Makkah”, I quietly prayed: Ya Allah, call me here for Umrah and Hajj. In Hajj season, only hujjaj can go to Makkah and Madina. My next flight to Paris was in Saudia’s big Boeing - comfortable, clean, great hospitality. I was impressed again. Riyadh Air has also launched recently. I’m a fan of Saudi Hawks and now super excited to see the new induction of planes with Riyadh Air. Wish them all the best - great to see Saudi aviation growing. Riyadh & Jeddah airports felt women-friendly and safe - that gave me so much peace of mind as a female traveler. I’m off again this morning from London Heathrow Airport to Delhi, flying the Airbus A350 east into a long winter’s day. It’s a blustery start in London, the kind of wind that keeps crews alert and aircraft honest. At the other end, Delhi may wake under fog, the sort that doesn’t just reduce visibility, but reshapes decisions hours before arrival. This is the part of flying few people ever see. Airline pilots aren’t just drivers of machines; we are risk managers and practiced decision makers. Before a single engine turns, we assess weather trends, probabilities, alternates, fuel burn, holding times, and the quiet “what ifs” that sit between forecast and reality. Fuel isn’t just about getting there… it’s about resilience. Options. Time. Margin. Add a little more for contingency. Plan for what might be waiting. Hope to use none of it. At 35,000 feet the aircraft will look serene, slicing cleanly through the sky, but every smooth arrival is usually the result of decisions made long before pushback; calm, deliberate, and sometimes deliberately conservative. SPACEX’S STARLINK As a B787 pilot, it pains me... when posts about aviation are this wrong on every detail & every conclusion. Starlink is the best option for airliners. Amazon is a distant second. ♦️ BEST-IN-CLASS Starlink Aviation already uses proven flat phased-array antennas — no gimbals, no moving parts. Amazon’s is the same tech, not different or better. ♦️ TWO > ONE The speed claims are way off. Starlink’s real-world performance on airlines already beats Amazon’s unproven promises. There is no 250 Mbps cap. And one larger antenna isn’t automatically superior — its wider profile creates more aerodynamic drag than Starlink’s two smaller inline antennas. Two antennas also give dispatch reliability: if one fails, Wi-Fi still works. Starlink installs are famously quick and reliable. ♦️ GLOBAL SERVICE Major airlines are global operations, I cross 80 time zones every month — the size of the constellation is the differentiator. Coverage dead zones mean I don’t get real-time updated turbulence plots or full-storm radar maps in the flight deck. Saying the antenna is THE bottleneck doesn’t make it true. A Wi-Fi antenna with no signal from satellites is just useless dead weight. Check out the gaps on the Amazon constellation below. ♦️ MARKETING HYPE The AWS private interconnect is a marketing bullet, but nothing an airliner actually needs. Compute for the plane sits on the plane. Operational data exchange is heavily regulated and runs on dedicated satcom datalinks (ACARS and CPDLC). Looping AWS in adds zero safety benefit and simply creates another potential hacker entry point. As for analytics — airlines already excel at that on the ground where it belongs. ♦️ LOCKED-IN? Long-term lock-in to a single cloud provider is a disadvantage to many. Delta clearly got a discount on the AWS today to bundle in the promise of Wi-Fi tomorrow. But what happens once the introductory discounts disappear and Delta gave up all leverage? Starlink is delivering today at global scale. Amazon is still selling PowerPoint slides.
