Our son's teacher used to call us weekly with... complaints. Last Friday during his parent/teacher check-in, she asked what we did to transform him. The answer: Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ). It all started with him not being able to burn his additional energy. Our kid was and still is hyperactive, couldn't fall asleep before 12am/1am, fidgeted through every school lesson, constantly snappy with us and his teachers. Some of our friends were calling him the duracell bunny (in reference to the battery ad) and we were genuinely worried this was just who he was. We tried a few different sports as our idea was that he didn't have any activity that involved burning his energy. Football, swimming, running him around the park until dark. He'd come home exhausted but his mind would still be racing at bedtime. The energy was there, but nothing seemed to actually settle him. My brother has been training and coaching kids BJJ since he was young. He kept telling us to bring our son. Tbh, we were skeptical - how would a combat sport help a kid who already couldn't sit still? But we were desperate as school was getting worse and the nightly battles were exhausting everyone. So at 5 years old, we signed him up. The first 6 months, he started falling asleep faster and not just because he was tired (he'd been tired before), but because BJJ teaches you to control your body and your mind simultaneously. He was learning to actually settle himself. The 11pm bedtime battles turned into peaceful 9pm nights. But what really caught us off guard was the respect. Every single class - bow when you enter/when you leave, wait your turn, shake hands with your opponent, listen to your coach. It gets drilled in through pure repetition. Not lectures, not punishment..just practice. 100 times per class, every class, for years. His teachers also noticed the change. He could finally sit through lessons, pay attention, actually remember what was discussed. Homework became manageable because he'd developed the patience to learn. He was less snappy and more willing to listen. The hardest part were in the first couple of years as he wanted to quit constantly. The usual kids reasons - i'm tired of BJJ, I don't want to train anymore etc. There were nights we genuinely questioned if we were pushing him too hard, if we were doing the right thing. But we kept him going. My brother being his coach helped, but honestly it was just us trusting that something would click eventually. And then in year 4, it did. He found his training partner, made real friends at the gym. Suddenly he was asking when his next class was. Going to support his teammates at competitions even when he wasn't competing himself. This year, the transformation was complete. His teacher went from calling us weekly to pulling us aside asking what we did. The fidgety, unfocused kid who couldn't sit still was competing in tournaments, winning medals, excelling at school, and genuinely looking forward to training. Here's what we got wrong for years: we kept trying to calm him down. Turns out, he didn't need calming.. he needed somewhere to put that energy. Other sports just tired him out. BJJ gave him an outlet that required both physical exhaustion and mental focus. And here's the thing few people talk about: BJJ is teaching him to lose. Not avoid failure but to face it. He still gets frustrated sometimes, still has moments where the tears come after a tough roll or a competition loss. But he's getting better at it. He processes it faster now, gets back up quicker. Most kids' activities try to avoid failure or sugarcoat it. BJJ makes you face it every single class and there's no hiding from it. That resilience is slowly building, and it's showing up everywhere. Homework frustrations don't spiral like they used to. Mistakes are becoming learning opportunities instead of total meltdowns. And he's even getting better at maths due to his concentration levels improving. If your kid can't sit still, can't focus, struggles with sleep, and school is calling home weekly do give BJJ a shot before assuming it's just who they are. Not for the discipline but for the outlet. Yesterday my dog, Fischer, died suddenly and unexpectedly. I’m... still in shock, blindsided by it all. He was as central a member of my family as any person. I’d like to tell you his story, briefly. 8 years ago, my 12-year old dog, Bandit, died after a long battle with kidney disease. A week later on a fishing trip, my brother encountered an abandoned, starving dog that swam out to his boat. When no owner could be found, I reluctantly took the dog in, and named him Fischer. I’m so glad I did. Along with his older sister, Daisy, he was my pandemic dog, my hiking buddy, and my left armrest while watching tv or gaming. He loved pawing at Red XIII (which we jokingly called him, the counterpart to my other dog, a Torgal lookalike), and he loved play fighting me while I tried to make my bed after he would crawl in it during the night. He loved playing fetch, and especially curling up against me for safety during storms. He was 90 pounds of rambunctious devotion. And God he loved me. We unknowingly spent his final morning on a hike. He chased and ran and played like usual. It was a perfect last memory with him, doing what we loved doing together most. He was “a fine hound,” and one of my favorite blessings. We’re going to miss him so much, but are so thankful for his life. That’s the thing about gratitude. It commingles with grief in such a way that both can breathe. And in that way, I guess I can breathe, too. At least, that’s what I’m trying to practice. Every gasp of sadness is met with an exhale of gratitude. I know many of you loved seeing him on stream. The couch behind me may have a Red XIII-sized hole now, but I’ll always cherish the memories of us in that room. Maybe we’ll do a Fischer stream and talk about grief soon, but I’ll need a minute. Yesterday or indeed today is not a time to... gloat over the horrific accident that nearly claimed the life of international boxing icon Anthony Joshua Joshua. Tragically, it did take the lives of his associates and possibly the driver involved. Their deaths must not be reduced to mere footnotes in the survival of a celebrity. Yet, because Anthony Joshua Joshua is a global figure, this incident has attracted massive attention. We must not allow this moment to pass without confronting our collective responsibility. These kinds of fatal accidents are the daily, naked reality of a nation that has failed failed in small things and in big ones alike. A country where road safety agencies and the police cannot provide even the most basic first aid. Where there are no stretchers, no functional ambulances, and certainly no air ambulances. Where people die not only from accidents, but from institutional neglect. This is why we must work sincerely and relentlessly toward a revolution one rooted in dignity, competence, and the sanctity of human life. I spoke frankly to Anthony Joshua years ago about the danger of aligning with Nigeria’s rotten leadership. It was an unpopular warning at the time, and many dismissed it. Last night I had one of the worst panic... attacks I’ve had in years. Thats a part of suffering from depression and I wanted to share that mainly to explain what it feels like so others can benefit. 🏃‍♂️ It started after a run last night. I knew I was on the edge of exhaustion for weeks. The room started spinning, I wanted to puke and my heart felt like it was going to explode. I put it down to exercise at first but it was a full on panic attack 🛌 After leaving a cafe in a hurry I had to lay down. It took 3 hours to pass. During all of that time I thought I could die. It’s this extreme fear that is the panic attack. Even if you’ve had loads of them you still struggle to get through it. 🦷 During and after it my jaw tensed up. Today my muscles ache. I’ve been tired and irritable for weeks. There’s been a fog. Indecision creeps in. Self doubt. A feeling of worthlessness. Imposter syndrome. Extreme exhaustion. 😖Anxiety and depression is no joke. I write this so as others can hopefully see it and think “ah good I’m not the only one feeling this” Like so many people you could look at me and think everything is perfect. I spend my days with dogs, I get constant nice comments, I’ve loads of followers, I wrote a book and been on TV etc. Many of the things people dream of and I feel blessed to get to do what I do. But more importantly I’m not ashamed to say I’m the guy who had to run out on a Saturday night on a friend back to my bed to do deep breathing and manage a crippling panic attack. I’m the person who often has to look at their feet instead of making eye contact as the anxiety is eating me up inside. For anybody out there just remember there are sports stars, CEOs, Lawyers, Singers, Movie stars and people from every walk of life who suffer like this. There’s absolutely no shame in it. Your sister, son or elderly parent might be struggling and trying to hide it. I know mine has come from losing 4 dogs recently and the pressure on my shoulders. I won’t lie I did look at the bar with the football on last night and think “2 quick beers will fix this”. But then I thought of Billy, Cindy, Eve and all the other dogs who rely on me.
