This is the largest monastic library on Earth. It’s... hidden in an Austrian mountain valley and is believed to have inspired the design of the iconic library in Disney’s Beauty and the Beast, but you’ve probably never even heard of it... Completed in 1776 within the Benedictine monastery Admont Abbey, the library was designed by architect Josef Hueber as the intellectual crown of the abbey. It is 70 metres long, lit by 48 windows, and lined with white-and-gold bookcases that hold 70,000 volumes. Across the entire abbey, the collection runs to roughly 200,000 books and 1,400 medieval manuscripts. Hueber designed the room to embody the philosophy of his era. "Like our understanding, spaces too should be filled with light," he said. The walls are white. The shelves are gilded. Sunlight pours through the windows and reflects off the gold leaf until the entire hall seems to glow from inside. The ceiling holds seven frescoes painted by Bartolomeo Altomonte in the summers of 1775 and 1776. He was almost eighty years old. Each fresco depicts a stage of human understanding, beginning with the sciences and rising, dome by dome, toward Divine Revelation in the central cupola. In 1865, a fire tore through the monastery. It destroyed the church, the dormitories, the workshops, almost everything. But the library survived untouched. Two and a half centuries after it was completed, it is still called the eighth wonder of the world... -- -- -- If you enjoyed this, I write a weekly newsletter read by over 50,000 people who love rediscovering the beauty of the past. In Philippines A Nigerian student, identified as Ikem, was allegedly brutally murdered by a group of Chinese in the Republic of the Philippines. The PUNCH reports that an ally to the deceased, identified as Michael Ojuola, made this known via his X handle on Sunday. Ojuola wrote, "A friend of mine, a Nigerian medical student named Ikem studying in the Republic of Philippines, was brvtally mvrdered by a group of Chinese. "They tied his hands up, covered and tied his mouth, and he was beaten blue-black until he gave up the gh*st. I can’t even think straight at the moment because of the horrific videos I’m getting right now from the hospital." In a separate post on his X handle, Ojuola shared videos of the remains of the deceased. His caption read, "RIP Ikem! No one deserves to go through this. No arrest has been made yet, as I write. We rescued her in September 2025 after her mother was killed by lions. She had been hiding alone for days, slipping in to drink at a water trough and disappearing again. Pips is in esteemed company. The first giraffe we raised to the wild was Kiko, rescued in 2015 and now continuing his rewilding at Lewa. Twiggy, another, joined the wild around the time Pips turned up, and has been seen in the company of a boyfriend. Pips is still at the beginning of her journey. 🔥"It is unbearable for people to live in fear...People... who are VIOLENT are just let back on the street again and again and are CHARGED WITH NOTHING... The legal system is a JOKE. It doesn't SERVE THE PEOPLE.” - NYC Vigilante Bernie Goetz 1984 You could write the same thing today & it would be just as relevant. Goetz was acquitted and NYer’s called the NYPD in record levels of support of his actions. After Dinkins the Democrat took after Koch murders hit an all time high of 2250 in 1990. Rudy Giuliani came in SAVED OUR NYC in 1994 with his “Broken Windows” policy. Rudy W. Giuliani made Manhattan the NEW ROME & yet here we stand at the precipice again. When Goetz stood up to being mugged he was labeled by people like Al Sharpton a racist..it failed…when Daniel Penny saved people on the subway at his of his own life..he was labeled a racist..and it failed.. As we breath that young woman was stabbed to death by a HEATHEN that shouldn’t have been on the streets and our MEDIA THAT IS THE ENEMY OF THE REPUBLIC REFUSES TO REPORT ON IT. There's Kaikai who discovered a love for mudbaths, Kipekee who is universally adored by the herd, and Wamata who is a real foodie. There's even a rhino in our care, Tytan whose best friends with a zebra. Safe in our care, these babies will follow in the footsteps of generations of orphans now living wild in Kenya's Tsavo Conservation Area. Whoever you choose, your recipient will virtually 'unwrap' their gift on a date of your choosing and receive monthly updates, exclusive photos, and content from the field for a full year. So stop last-minute panic buying, and give a gift that makes a real difference. Set up a gift adoption now:show more

Dangerous Military Escalation and Systematic Attempts to Drag the... Region into War Since dawn today, the areas of Deir Hafer, Maskanah, and Tishreen Dam have been witnessing continuous military escalation, amid an intense aggression carried out by Damascus factions, in parallel with escalating attacks by Turkish unmanned aerial vehicles ( Bayraktar) , which warns of increasing risks to the security of civilians and vital facilities in the region. During the early morning hours, Damascus government factions launched repeated attacks on the surroundings of Tishreen Dam, using suicide drones, artillery shells, and mortars. The number of attacks exceeded 12 strikes, which also targeted the villages of Al-Mahshiyah, Sheikh Hassan, and the villages of Qishlah. The shelling is still ongoing around the dam at the time of preparing this report. The Damascus factions also escalated their targeting of infrastructure and service facilities in the town of Deir Hafer, where the Deir Hafer Post Office building was shelled using artillery and suicide drones without casualties, while the civilian Deir Hafer bakery was targeted by a suicide drone, leading to the disruption of service and a direct threat to the population’s food security. These attacks were accompanied by clear attempts to paralyze daily life by targeting any movement in the area, including preventing farmers from accessing their lands and work, which negatively affected the civilians’ living conditions. On the ground, our forces repelled an infiltration attempt carried out by Damascus government factions on the axis of the village of Zubaidah in the southern countryside of Deir Hafer city. The attempt failed, and the attackers were forced to flee, despite it being carried out under the cover of drones and the use of machine guns. In parallel, the area witnessed intensive flights of Turkish (Bayraktar) drones, where a ( Bayraktar) Turkish drone targeted a military point belonging to our forces in the city of Maskanah without casualties، this being the second strike on the same day. Another point was also targeted in the village of Al Bu‘asi in the countryside of Tabqah. The Turkish drones( Bayraktar) continued to target the city of Maskanah for the fourth time since the start of the escalation, a clear indication of the rising pace of aerial attacks in the region. This simultaneous escalation since dawn today comes amid the continuation of military operations up to the present moment, which heightens expectations of an expansion of the scope of confrontations and their serious repercussions on civilians, infrastructure, and vital facilities. The Damascus factions bear full responsibility for this escalation and the resulting humanitarian and security consequences in the region. SDF Media Centre January 14, 2026show more

The story goes that when Paolina Bonaparte, sister of... Napoleon, was asked whether it had been uncomfortable to pose nearly naked for Antonio Canova, she answered with a line that has been repeated ever since: "All veils may fall before Canova." She had married into one of the great noble families of Rome, the Borghese, in 1803. Two years later, her husband Camillo commissioned the most celebrated sculptor in Europe to portray her in marble. Canova carved her between 1805 and 1808 as Venus Victrix — Venus the Victorious — reclining on a couch, semi-nude, holding the golden apple given to the goddess in the Judgement of Paris, when she was named the most beautiful of all the goddesses of Olympus. It scandalised Rome. Aristocratic women, especially the sister of an emperor, were not portrayed without drapery. The gossip was relentless, and the reply attributed to her became just as famous as the scandal itself... Canova carved her in white marble so finely that the mattress beneath her appears to give under her weight, and the surface of her skin glows in the light as though the stone were alive. She reclines today in the Galleria Borghese in Rome, where she has not moved in nearly two hundred years. "I can't read or write," Canova used to say, holding up his hammer and chisel, "but with these I can create poetry." The common dream of Russians is a speedy, "one... big victory" in the war against Ukraine, Sergey Kiriyenko, Putin's first deputy chief of staff, said. An absolutely cynical statement. Members of parliament from Russia, European countries, and the Global South held a prayer service for the peaceful resolution of conflicts in Ukraine, the Gaza Strip, and other hotspots on the sidelines of the 2nd international "BRICS-Europe" symposium, TASS reported. "We gathered here to pray because we share a common goal - the goal of peace, the goal of interreligious dialogue, and the goal of bringing together people who are outside politics yet seek better mutual understanding and friendship between people," said Pierre de Gaulle, President of the De Gaulle Foundation for Peace and Friendship Between Peoples. "We are also here to pray for fundamental values, especially in the Eastern world, where these values are honored and preserved. We are here to remind ourselves of human purpose and to restore the understanding that there is meaning connected with God in every action we take. Day by day, we must remember our human nature and that we are in God’s hands." Member of the European Parliament Fernand Kartheiser, in his prayer, called for people not to see enemies in one another, but only friends.show more

The first word my daughter learned to speak was... ‘book’. With wide eyes, she would point at a book and say ‘boo’ in a voice full of glee. We began taking her to a nearby Crossword bookshop (in Aundh, Pune) when she could barely walk. Our trips soon became a cherished daddy-daughter tradition, where we would visit once every month and buy three books for her. She chose two and I chose one. A friendly employee once told me, his face beaming with pride, that this was the biggest Crossword in India! Four floors full of books felt like a heaven. But then they converted one floor into a kids play area. Another surrendered to a toy shop. Then cafes. Then stationery. Then an event space. The book shelves, once brimming with finely curated collections, became crowded with cheap campus romance and badly written historical fiction. Yet, we continued our tradition. 3 books a month! Yesterday, we went there to find the doors shut. A man on a ladder was ripping out the Crossword sign. Slowly. Methodically. As he pulled out one letter after another, I felt a physical sensation of pain. My daughter had tears in her eyes. A glowing light somewhere was snuffed out, and the world became slightly darker. And some of my faith in humanity died forever! A society that does not read is a society that does not know itself. We used to turn pages and paint stories with our imagination. Now we endlessly stab screens till our thumbs hurt, our minds numbed by the dopamine drip of likes and reels. We have become slaves to our devices, consuming whatever they decide for us, our thoughts hijacked by algorithms, our souls starved for meaning. If you want your children to read, don’t tell them. Show them. Children hate listening to adults, but they love imitating them. Pick up a book yourself, and they will do the same! P.S.: I verified the claim. The largest store of India’s most beloved chain of bookshops has indeed shut down.show more
