CIWS systems can do very little against them Drone... swarms represent such a serious threat to warships that there are very few effective defense options once they are launched. For example, a modern Phalanx CIWS in its latest block carries about 1,500 rounds. A short burst against incoming drones typically consumes 150–200 rounds. This means each CIWS has enough ammunition for roughly 6–8 drones, if everything goes perfectly and no additional bursts are needed. There is no time to reload a second time before the drones begin hitting the ship. We are facing swarms of 100–200 drones or even more, equipped with tandem warheads and highly advanced evasive maneuvering capabilities in Ukraine. 🇮🇷⚔️🇮🇱The situation with Iranian Shahed-136 UAVs used against Israel... is changing. While their use was rare before, now the cases have increased. The main problem is that the Shahed represents a new type of threat for which Israel's air defenses are not prepared. Unlike the predictable Qassams, the drones are low-flying and stealthy, often attacking from unexpected directions. Israel's response has so far been limited, using AH-64 Apache attack helicopters to intercept drones and using air defense missiles sparingly. This is reminiscent of the mistakes of the first months of the war in Ukraine, when drones were shot down using expensive systems. In practice, this means that Iran is testing the capabilities of Israel's air defenses. Each successful drone provides intelligence on the weak points of the defense.
