This is a wonderful season to be in Baku,... as the city is filled with lights and decorations welcoming the new year. As a Christian, today I am celebrating Christmas (Orthodox calendar), together with the 250,000 members of the Christian community here, which enjoys freedom of faith and worship. Two weeks ago I celebrated Hanukkah with the Jewish community, which is the one of the biggest in the Muslim world. They also enjoy full religious freedom, and they feel safer practicing their faith here in Azerbaijan than in most European capitals, especially as antisemitism is on the rise these days. Last week we celebrated the New Year, Novi God, together with all the citizens of Azerbaijan, regardless of their ethnicity or religion.
