Overhead shrugs might be my favourite way to train... traps, that isn't doing RDL's or pulls. It's a movement that gets away from a depressed scapula which is common in bodybuilding exercise selection. Overhead shrugs can contribute to shoulder stability, making your shoulder joints more resilient to stress and injury. It forms part of my shoulder health plans. Additionally the upper play a role in neck strength and stability. Strengthening these muscles can help reduce the risk of neck pain and discomfort. Which is why I started reintroducing it as part of complete neck training protocol. Also mere diversity and novel stimulus make this a worthwhile entry, grab an empty bar and go!show more

Baseball is a sport that relies heavily on being powerful, and efficient in the frontal and transverse plane. "You should train until you can't lift your arms!"... Your training session destroyed you so thoroughly that you've lost basic motor function? Congratulations, you've confused stimulus with trauma. Effective training stimulates adaptation with minimal recovery cost. What you're doing is maximising recovery cost while making adaptation optional. In my opinion, you should have a MINIMUM of... 3 yardages with each wedge in your bag (PW can be 2 yardages) LW - 3 Yardages SW - 3 Yardages GW - 3 Yardages PW - 2 Yardages With each wedge, I like to have my lead arm stop opposite different parts of my body in the backswing... 1. Hip high (ish) 2. Chest high 3. Shoulder high With a PW, I will only really use chest high & shoulder high With all clubs, I could also hit a full shot that I'd consider a 100% speed shot, that essentially gives me 4 yardages (3 with PW) That's a total of 11-12 yardages inside of 100-120y... you should be able to laser the flag & hit darts! 👊 For simplicity, hip high, chest high, shoulder high. Coaches HATE TO SEE IT. Athletes get visibly uncomfortable.... It takes maturity to handle it correctly. It's the REST INTERVAL. Too often we conflate activity with achievement. But when we're training for real speed, real power, or real strength? The session should be a lot more standing around than working. Because the prescribed work is to go at 100% - and that takes recovery time. So rest when the training rx demands it.show more

Some thoughts while training this morning: 1) I actually... don’t like getting up to train at 6am. But I do what needs to be done, and with a young family I want to spend time with I’d rather take time away from myself and train while they sleep 2) See your training as a meeting with yourself; this is an idea you might have seen thrown about. This is one of the greatest feelings a hitter... will ever experience… and most players never learn it. This drill has nothing to do with mechanics. It has everything to do with execution. The pitcher mixes fastballs and slow balls. Your only two rules: ⚾ Slow pitch or spin? Don’t roll it over. ⚾ Fastball? Don’t pull it. Now you’re forced to recognize speed instead of guessing. You’re training your eyes, your timing, and your approach—not just your swing. This is one of my favorite two-strike drills because it teaches hitters to trust what they see instead of committing too early. A great swing is important. Knowing when to use it is what separates hitters. Train with an expert, not an influencer.show more

Grip a club in your lead hand. Observe how... twisting your forearm changes the angle of the face. This is largely what controls where your ball flies. Small differences in this angle lead to huge changes in shot direction. This precision is not being trained in the gym with “golf exercises”. Poor control of this face angle is what leads to a whole host of swing issues. More so than physical limitations. For example, it is far more likely you come over the top in an effort to stop the ball going right because your face is wide open and you’ve seen the ball go right the last 5000 times than it is you lack hip or shoulder mobility. It would be beneficial for me as a trainer to say otherwise, but I just don’t believe it to be true. Use the gym to work on your physical capabilities. Improve your mobility, strength, and power. These are the things you are losing as you age. Leave the swing mechanics for your practice and golf lessons. If you try to “fix your swing in the gym” you will likely do a poor job of training your swing and your body.show more

Every golfer in the world has 2 choices when... he hits a golf ball… Choice 1….Address the ball in a manner that puts your right arm in a closed pack position of your humeroulnar joint Choice 2….Address the ball in a manner that puts your left arm in the closed pack position… Choice 1 forces you to supinate your right forearm on your takeaway and pronate your left forearm on your downswing… Choice 2 forces you to pronate your left forearm on your takeway and supinate your left forearm on your downswing… The arthrokinematics of your shoulder joint could care less about your swing thoughts, training tools, or tempo. Ryan Fox goes with choice 1 resulting in a left shoulder that adducts/flexes/externally rotates as he goes from zero to contact…. He achieves this using the muscles of motor tract 5 on his left side and motor tract 1 on his right side.show more
