From International Space Station, we have a unique vantage... point to observe lightning storms from directly above them. Much like from the ground, they appear as rapid, intense flashes that are over as quickly as they started. But, with the help of handheld cameras and a bit of practice (and, admittedly, some luck), we can capture these intense flashes with a very high frame rate then slow them down to see how the lightning propagates. It's lightning, in slow motion. This is one that occurred over Indonesia on 6/28. I shot it for a half second at 1/120 frame rate, so, 60 separate frames. I then compiled those frames into two videos: the first, in real-time, and the second, slowed down so that each frame is a half second to highlight the progression of the flash. Note the incredible burst of light in one frame, which includes what is likely a TLE on the upper left. A TLE, or Transient Luminous Event, is an electrical discharge that happens in the upper atmosphere above lightning storms (if you haven’t seen Nichole “Vapor” Ayers TLE photo from last week, head over to her page). As their name implies, these are transient, or short lived, phenomena – it appeared in only one frame of the sequence, lasting for no more than 1/120th of a second. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day feature the most impressive... severe thunderstorm setup I’ve seen along the California coastline in at least a decade. The first round of isolated severe thunderstorms will come ashore tonight, bringing the threat of a isolated tornado and severe wind gusts over 60 mph from the Central Coast up to Humboldt County. The severe weather threat then expands into the Central Valley during the afternoon, California’s tornado alley, with the potential for isolated tornadoes, damaging winds, and even large hail. The threat then shifts south into Southern California tomorrow, where isolated severe wind gusts and a brief tornado will be possible. However, Christmas Eve into Christmas morning features the most potent severe weather environment of the week and could lead to a severe thunderstorm outbreak along the coastline from the Central Coast up to the North Coast. The combination of strong low-level and deep-layer shear with sufficient instability is rarely seen in this part of the world. I seriously cannot recall seeing Significant Tornado Parameter (STP) values exceed 3 along the California coastline. The peak threat window appears to be from 10 PM Thursday to 8 AM Friday. It would not be out of the question to see a Severe Thunderstorm Watch issued Christmas Eve night with the potential for a couple tornadoes and scattered severe wind gusts. I also believe this may be the first time on record that San Francisco has been placed under a Marginal Risk for severe thunderstorms in the Day 1–3 NWS Storm Prediction Center Convective Outlooks.show more

Yamuna River Floods near Noida !! The Yamuna River... near Noida flooding across wide stretches of flat terrain. Because the river flows through the plains of North India, when heavy rainfall occurs in its upper catchment (Haryana, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh), the water spreads out over a vast low-lying area, inundating farmland, villages, and even parts of urban settlements. The flat topography gives the floodwaters no quick outlet, so the waterlogging lasts longer and causes severe disruption to people’s lives. By contrast, South Indian rivers such as the Kaveri, Krishna, and Godavari flow mostly through undulating or hilly terrain in their upper and middle reaches. Floods there are usually swift and forceful but tend to recede faster because the steeper gradients allow water to drain quickly into reservoirs or the sea. Thus, while northern rivers like the Yamuna create widespread and prolonged flooding on flat alluvial plains, southern rivers typically cause short-lived but intense floods in narrower valleys. Both situations bring their own challenges, but in terms of area submerged, the Yamuna’s floods near Noida cover a much broader expanse. 🎥Arav Kolishow more
