Raha the Rhino Update! Our intrepid little girl in... blue is doing well. While her journey remains a unique and unprecedented one, we are happy with her progress. Raha is more energetic, eating well (though still reluctant to consume the roughage that makes up a typical black rhino’s diet), and her injured rear end isn’t giving her any major issues at the moment. This isn't a Mouse - it's a Portal. I... remain in my conviction that people in the City are semi-comatose, not noticing things around them. Hell, they don't even look at the sky. This seems crazy as we are hard-wired to notice things around us, to perceive and interpret clues and signals - this necessary for our hunter-gatherer ancestors to survive. The City is a great place for the reason that when you go to or view things 'off the beaten track' things reveal themselves - nature, secrets, and stories. Many of these things are actually in the open but under the radar of the city person. I realised years ago that when I'm down in the London Underground, if I look at the far track for a few minutes, a mouse going about its business is likely to appear. The far track means it is hidden from the people on the crowded platform. Just-wait-long-enough. Sure enough, I filmed for a few seconds and a furry critter appeared to order, like magic. When you open your eyes portals reveal themselves. They take you to another world. It seems even more magical when it's just you viewing it. A world within a world, for your privilege. For a few seconds, in this case, the people on the platform faded into the background and the wild and the oceanic appeared. These portals are the Perfect Moments I talk about.show more

Enkesha found herself a suitor the other day when... a wild bull appeared among the orphans – and set his sights on our uniquely beautiful girl. She's still a little young for a romance, but this chap was insistent, following her through the forest. While the herd scattered, little Lenny was having none of it and stepped up to face the giant – determined to protect his nanny! Eventually the bull gave up, leaving everyone at peace again. Dear Cat Castle Clowder. The decision is made. Whilst... Meggy was snuggled between us and not purring loudly as she always does, we knew it was time. We called the vet and unfortunately they don’t have the option to come to us today due to their busy schedule. We are booked in at 4pm and will bring our baby girl home for the others to say goodbye before our final goodbye at the cremation tomorrow. There are simply not enough words to say thank you. Gather - work in progress what if your notes... app felt more like a physical notebook? you can have pages with your notes, your tasks, your thoughts, your inspiration and organize them in a way that is meaningful to you. each page is a little canvas. it might look a little bit like a gimmick, but once you try it, you might feel differently. when designing Gather, Ajay Sabs and i draw our inspiration more than anything from physical things. we’ve always wanted to try and re-create some of the feelings and romanticism we associate with physical notebooks, books and magazines. we’ve always felt there was something special about how pages have an order and how you’re mind creates visual and spatial connections depending on how things are organized - particularly things that you’ve written, revisit often or have a significance to you. the notebook view is an idea we’ve played with for a very long time. and its a lot more than just swiping between pages. this is just a little peek. we are also working on other views that are optimized for different use-cases and different modes of thinking. we’re excited to share some of those soon.show more

Is your toddler suddenly throwing (or dropping) everything they... get their hands on? Food, toys… you name it. You’re not alone. This week I’ve been introducing play schemas, 9 common patterns that can help to demystify your toddler’s seemingly random behaviors. And you guessed it: this is one. We call it the trajectory schema. If you take nothing else away from this post, let it be this: your little one doesn’t throw things because they are misbehaving or “bad.” Babies throw things because they are babies. And they are learning as they do so. Learning about cause and effect. Learning about gravity. Learning what (and practicing something new) they can do with their bodies. Learning hand-eye coordination. It’s a completely normal part of development. And the fascination won’t last forever. The real question is, how do you manage it? First, be proactive. Expect that anything your little one handles might reasonably be thrown or dropped. So choose wisely, avoiding items that are valuable or might pose a danger to them or others if they suddenly took flight. Second, depending on the age of your child, begin introducing some natural consequences. Put the toy/object away temporarily after it is thrown (if throwing it is dangerous or inappropriate). And involve your child in the subsequent clean-up. You can also redirect. Explain which things are and are not for throwing. Model the correct use of these objects. Finally, lean into it. Recognizing that young children are drawn to throwing, provide items that are safe and acceptable to throw. Soft toys. Socks. Balls. Might be time to give up on Bobcat Company... . When our machine was in the shop, we had them replace the drive belt. First job out today, the drive belt fails. Machine’s now stranded on the customer’s property and completely immobile. We called it in and were told the earliest a tech could come out is next Tuesday. That’s a full week of a machine just sitting, dead in the water. Totally unacceptable and not a good sign of reliability. They charged us for a new belt and pulley, which we’ll now be installing ourselves tomorrow. And they tried to spin it like maybe we did something wrong. We didn’t. At the exact same time, our other machine starts spewing hydraulic fluid from the arm. No obvious cause. Our 2025 has been in the shop 5 times already. The 2019? Even more. I’d understand this stuff if we were slamming these things into trees or neglecting maintenance, but that’s not what’s happening. These are just mechanical issues that keep stacking up. All this is happening while we’re right at the finish line on buying a new T86. Honestly? I’m second guessing it. The guys in service and sales have been great, no complaints there, but the reliability just hasn’t been. We need a third machine, and we need it yesterday. Starting to look hard at the Takeuchi TL12 now. We’ll see what happens.show more

Your little one is egocentric. But not in the... way you might think. We often use the term egocentric to describe adults who behave selfishly, deliberately putting their own needs and desires above those of others. When we speak of egocentrism through the lens of child development, we aren’t describing a character flaw, but rather an inability to understand the world from the perspective of others. Check out this little guy, who’s arrived to pay a visit to his cousin. He knocks on the door, but when a voice from the other side of the door asks “who is it” he answers in true toddler fashion: ME. It’s a lovely example of egocentrism in action. Not yet capable of putting himself in the shoes of the interrogator, our hero fails to recognize that everyone is “me” to themselves and that the answer - while accurate from his perspective - actually fails to provide the information being sought. Responding with his name would have been a more mature response, but it’s one that doesn’t yet occur to him at this tender age. Perspective taking is a skill that develops over time, not emerging with sophistication in many children until 4 or 5 years of age. It is the skill set that underlies the development of empathy. The developmental egocentrism of infants and toddlers is particularly important for parents to keep in mind. When your toddler does or says something you might consider inconsiderate in an older child (or adult), don’t fall into the trap of attributing intention that doesn’t really exist. Toddlers’ egocentric behaviors aren’t deliberately thoughtless… just a reflection of your little one’s developmental stage.
