Yet each time, Konovalets found the strength not only to endure but to support and unite the Ukrainians around him. As a student, he established Prosvita branches and promoted sports among Ukrainian youth. As a commander, he formed effective Ukrainianized units and reformed the army’s leadership. While in captivity, he promoted education and discipline among his fellow soldiers. In exile, he rallied Ukrainian veterans and other emigrants around him. Without engaging directly in politics, the Colonel set one uncompromising condition for politicians: state-centered priorities. As long as the government advanced Ukraine’s interests, it could rely on the steadfast support of the military — regardless of the ministers' party affiliations. But one thing must be made absolutely clear. This is not an allegation against the Muslim community. Many Muslims participated wholeheartedly in India’s freedom struggle and sang Vande Mataram as part of the national movement. Therefore, today’s debate is not against any religion. It is a debate about political positions concerning nationalism. But history also raises another important question. In 1937, political opposition emerged over the use of Vande Mataram. Subsequently, the politics demanding the partition of India became stronger, and ultimately, in 1947, the country was divided. That is why, when in 2026 a position is being taken in Keralam that Vande Mataram need not be sung, a natural question arises: Where will such political compromises take us? What will the state of Keralam’s national consciousness be ten years from now? If we begin making political compromises over one national symbol today, what will prevent similar compromises on other national symbols tomorrow? That is the question Keralam needs to debate today. We have even witnessed situations where a teacher faced serious consequences merely because a question about Veer Savarkar was included in a quiz competition. When a historical figure, an idea, or a national song becomes subject to political pressure, it should concern every democratic society. That is why the BJP is bringing Muhammad Ali Jinnah into this discussion today. This is not a discussion about one individual. It is not a discussion about one religion. Nor is it a discussion against any community. It is a discussion about the future of nationalism. If we want to ensure that history does not repeat itself, we must learn from history. Those who say today that Vande Mataram need not be sung—who can guarantee that tomorrow they will not question another national symbol? If we continue surrendering our national values to political pressure, what we ultimately stand to lose will not merely be the words of a song—it will be our sense of national unity. Therefore, our message to the Chief Minister of Keralam is very clear: Do not surrender nationalism to political pressure. No one needs anyone’s permission to sing Vande Mataram in Keralam. Its roots go back to the early Slavic settlements between the 6th and 9th centuries, when Slavs spread across Central and Eastern Europe. Cabbage was one of the first crops they mastered. It grew in poor soil, survived cold climates, and — once fermented — could feed a family through months of winter. Sauerkraut was not a delicacy. It was strategic survival. Meat entered the pot only after slaughter season, usually late autumn. Nothing was wasted. Smoked pork, bones, fat, and sausages were preserved for months, not taste but necessity. Forest mushrooms — boletus, chanterelles — were gathered, dried, and stored because forests were the Slavs’ first supermarkets. Garlic, onion, peppercorns, caraway, later paprika — all layered slowly into what became kapustnica. By the Middle Ages, this soup was already pan-Slavic. Variants existed from the Carpathians to the Balkans. In Catholic lands it became a Christmas dish after Advent fasting; in Orthodox regions it marked feast days after long abstinence. The logic was the same everywhere: simple ingredients, deep flavor, communal eating. Under empires — Hungarian, Habsburg, Ottoman, Russian — kapustnica stayed local and unchanged. Under communism, when shelves were empty but traditions survived, it remained a fixed point of dignity. One pot. One table. One shared memory. This is why kapustnica still matters. It carries a time when Slavs lived closer to land than to politics. When food wasn’t content, but continuity. When survival created culture — not the other way around. Kapustnica is not nostalgia. “IYALOJA GENERAL” IS ILLEGAL AND UNCONSTITUTIONAL Ever since the... purported “installation” of a new ”Iyaloja” in Edo State by Mrs. Folasade Tinubu-Ojo, who styles herself the Iyaloja-General of Nigeria, I have been inundated with questions asking me to comment. Because of my ongoing investigation into the Edo State vs EuroAfrica CCI $250 Million deal, I initially held back. But after reviewing the Nigerian Constitution and relevant statutory frameworks, it is clear that the very concept and office of an Iyaloja-General is not only alien to Edo culture, but also illegal unconstitutional, and without statutory authority. Consequently, it has no legal power to confer titles in Edo State. Let us break this down carefully: 1. Is “Iyaloja-General” a constituted office? No. There is no federal constitutional or statutory office called “Iyaloja-General.” The 1999 Constitution (as amended) lists federal and state offices, commissions, and authorities. The title “Iyaloja-General” does not appear anywhere. It is a traditional or civil-society designation, not a public office created by law. 2. Do states have market women’s associations? Yes, but these are typically private associations, registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission under the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) 2020. They enjoy legal personality but have no governmental authority. Some states, such as Lagos, have created state-level market councils by law, but this is not universal and is strictly state-specific. 3. In Benin, what regulates the Iyeki role? The Oba of Benin has made it clear: market leadership in Benin is guided by the Iyeki system, a traditional office. Traders in each market choose their Iyeki, and the Oba’s palace confirms the selection. Iyeki duties are cultural and administrative, rooted in Benin tradition. There is no Edo State statute that overrides this customary process. 4. What authority does an “Iyaloja-General” have in Edo? None. Under the Nigerian Constitution, there is no power for an “Iyaloja-General” to install market leaders in Edo. At best, such an appointment would carry weight only inside her private association, not within Edo’s traditional or legal framework. For context, Lagos State is considering a Market Authority Bill that proposes an advisory council where an Iyaloja-General may be mentioned. But that is Lagos State law, not federal law, and it does not extend to Edo. 5. How much is the Edo State Government backing this? Despite the Oba’s firm rejection of the Iyaloja concept in Benin, the so-called installation was hosted inside the Edo State Government House. Reports confirm that top officials attended: the governor’s sister (who's the "first lady" of Edo State, representing her brother), the Commissioner for Women Affairs, the Commissioner for Health (Dr Cyril Oshiomhole), and several others in Governor Okpebholo’s administration. During the event, promises of “2.5 million votes” for President Tinubu in the 2027 elections were openly made. That raises urgent questions: • Was this really a customary installation, or a political rally disguised as tradition? • Why has the Edo State Governor himself remained silent since? • Why did the state government lend institutional weight to an office that is neither constitutional, nor statutory, nor indigenous to Edo culture? 6. On the ethnic spin Some have tried to frame this as an ethnic quarrel. That is misleading. The Oba of Benin never reduced the matter to who was installed, but to what was being installed. His objection was categorical: the very concept of an Iyaloja-General is alien to Benin tradition. Therefore, even if it had been an Edo woman from Ogbe who was “installed,” it would still be wrong. This is a matter of legality and culture, not ethnicity. My conclusion From a legal perspective, the title “Iyaloja-General of Nigeria” is nonexistent in the Constitution. That’s the key difference—and the reason Western refineries have quietly relied on back-channel networks through places like Dubai for years to keep getting it, even under sanctions. Crude oil isn’t all the same. It’s a mix of hydrocarbons with different molecular weights, and that mix determines how easily it can be turned into the fuels refineries actually sell—like gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and heating oil. The main measure here is API gravity. Higher API means lighter crude that’s easier and cheaper to refine, and it produces more of those high-value fuels. Lower API means heavier crude that takes more energy, more processing, and more expensive equipment, while producing more low-value leftovers. Iranian Light crude sits right in a sweet spot, with an API gravity around 33–36 and moderate sulfur levels. It’s light enough to produce a lot of gasoline and middle distillates without high costs, but not so light that it limits what refineries can make. In industry terms, it’s close to an ideal blend. Now look at the alternatives. Venezuela’s Merey crude is much heavier, with very low API gravity and high sulfur. Refining it profitably requires specialized, expensive equipment like cokers and hydrocrackers. Some refineries are built for that—but it’s not interchangeable with Iranian crude. It’s a completely different type of input. On the other end, US West Texas Intermediate is very light and low in sulfur. Sounds perfect in theory, but in practice it’s almost too light. Many refineries—especially in Europe and Asia—are designed for medium-grade crude, so they can’t just switch to WTI. They often have to blend it with heavier oils to make it work. That’s where Iranian crude stands out. It fits right into the middle of the system. It doesn’t need the heavy-duty processing of Venezuelan oil or the blending adjustments required for ultra-light US shale. That balance is why it’s consistently in demand and often priced at a premium. It also explains why countries like India kept buying it despite sanctions, and why those complex trading networks through Dubai existed in the first place. The Strait of Hormuz isn’t just a route for oil—it’s a route for this specific kind of oil that global refineries are optimized to process. If that flow gets disrupted, it’s not just about losing supply. It’s about losing the type of crude the system runs most efficiently on, forcing refineries to adapt with less suitable alternatives.
