NOAA’s National Weather Service Winter Outlook has been released.... This outlook shows the likely temperature and precipitation the U.S. could experience during meteorological winter (December 1, 2025 through February 28, 2026) and drought conditions through January 31, 2026. Here are the highlights: 🌎La Niña conditions are expected to develop later this fall and will be a factor in the winter outlook. 🌡️A milder-than-average winter is favored across the southern tier of the country and along the Eastern Seaboard. 💧Wetter-than-average conditions for the Ohio Valley and southern Great Lakes region, along with most of Alaska, are also favored. Drier-than-average conditions are forecast in the desert Southwest, along the Gulf Coast, and from Florida to the Carolinas. 🌤️Drought conditions are expected to persist and worsen from southern Texas to California. NOAA’s seasonal outlooks provide the likelihood that average temperature and total precipitation for the three-month period will be above-, near- or below-average and how drought conditions are anticipated to change in the months ahead. Keep In Mind: The outlook does not project seasonal snowfall accumulations as snow forecasts are generally not predictable more than a week in advance, and cold weather can still be experienced in areas that are warmer-than-normal over the course of the season.show more

Happy #WorldOceansDay, everyone! Today is the day for us... to celebrate and honor our oceans. 🌊🐋 Did you know that the ocean covers 71% of the Earth’s surface? It also holds about 96.5% of all Earth's water — that's a volume of 320 million cubic miles! Living in all of this ocean is an unknown number of eukaryotic species, but some studies estimate that a quarter of all eukaryotic life on Earth lives in the ocean. That would imply that there are ∼2.2 million eukaryotic marine species! (All animals, plants, fungi, and many unicellular organisms are eukaryotes) Information provided by Coastal and Marine Hazards and Resources Program / USGS researchshow more

Today, China successfully launched two hyperspectral satellites, "Oriental Smart... Eye" (OSE), using a "Smart Dragon-3" rocket from a sea platform located near the city of Haikou. Equipped with advanced hyperspectral imaging systems and integrated artificial intelligence processors, these satellites can analyze land, water, vegetation, and minerals directly in orbit, reducing data processing time from days to minutes, according to the Chinese state-run news agency "Xinhua." The agency also noted that together, they provide global coverage every five days and will be used for environmental monitoring, agriculture, and emergency management, including crop monitoring projects in Indonesia and Uzbekistan.show more

Mariyam Thuhufaa, Senior Marine Biologist and Scuba Instructor at... Siyam World Maldives, joined the resort ahead of its opening after working as a marine researcher at the Maldives Marine Research Institute. Over the past four years, she has led marine conservation initiatives while introducing guests to the rich underwater ecosystems of the Maldives. She has also been closely involved in the resort's Wreck to Reef project from its earliest planning stages, helping prepare the vessel before it was intentionally submerged and later monitoring how corals, fish and other marine life gradually colonised the artificial reef. According to Thuhu, the project offers a rare opportunity to study artificial reefs in the Maldives, where shipwrecks are common but scientific research on their ecological impact remains limited. She also highlighted the remarkable transformation of Siyam World's house reef since the resort opened. Although the reef was initially recovering from construction, marine life steadily returned, with increasing numbers of fish, sharks and invertebrates. Even after a major coral bleaching event, the reef recovered quickly, strengthening confidence in its growing resilience. Looking ahead, Thuhu hopes initiatives such as Wreck to Reef will expand across the Maldives, raising awareness of marine conservation and encouraging more young people to pursue careers in marine science. She believes collaboration between resorts, local communities and researchers can help protect the nation's reefs, advance scientific understanding and inspire future generations to safeguard the ocean.show more

Sunday, June 21, 2026 9:31 AM PST / 12:31... PM EDT: A mini heatwave starts Tuesday into Thursday, with temperatures of 100F - 105F and humidity primarily for San Fernando, Simi, and Santa Clarita and Moreno Valleys. This also includes Palmdale, Lancaster, and Barstow. The main 594 DM heat axis will, unfortunately, affect Palm Springs, Coachella Valley, and Imperial. These areas will see temperatures of 115° to 120° during this time, especially on Wednesday and Thursday, which will be the hottest days of this year, and humidity will come in from the southeast, possibly bringing the first real taste of some monsoon moisture into our region. There are also new changes in the last 24 hours of the Baja low axis and embedded early Wednesday morning hints of unstable parameters for Los Angeles to San Diego counties. This includes the high desert communities, something to keep an eye on. Because it’s been so cool along the coastal zones and valleys for the past several months, please make sure to drink plenty of water and wear light clothing. Also, please check on the pets and elderly, as now we are on the first day of summer, and this means that more heat will be in our future. Temperatures in Phoenix will reach 115 to 119° heat by Wednesday and Thursday. This will be the hottest temperature so far this year. If you are traveling on the I-10 or the I-15, please make sure that you are not traveling during peak hours in the sun, as this could cause your automobile to overheat, especially if your radiator is not working properly with its cooling system. This is a real situation that can occur with older cars, and even some newer cars can have issues, as the extreme heat could be very dangerous in the desert communities. Tropics off the coast of Mexico continue to be monitored as more of an uptick in showers and thunderstorms organization falling into more favorable conditions, warmer sea surface temperatures 85.4F to 91.4F already due to ongoing strengthening of El Nino. Another factor is less shearing in the lower levels and mid levels of the atmosphere, giving opportunity for development in the next 2 weeks. Had the honor of launching the weather balloon for... upper air data collection in NOAA Boise NWS Boise. A radiosonde is a battery-powered instrument package attached to a weather balloon that measures atmospheric pressure, temperature, humidity, and wind speed as it ascends. Transmitting real-time data via radio to ground stations. The upper air data is crucial for input into weather models and useful for predicting severe damal dumeels. The radiosonde flight can last for more than two hours. During this time, the balloon can ascend to heights exceeding 35 km and drift over 200 km from the launch point. Throughout the journey, the radiosonde experiences extreme atmospheric conditions, including temperatures as low as -92°C and air pressures that are only a fraction of those at Earth’s surface. When the balloon has expanded beyond its elastic limit (20-25 feet in diameter) and bursts, the radiosonde returns to Earth via a small parachute. This slows its descent, minimizing the danger to life and property.show more

During the last ice age, sea levels were approximately... 400 feet lower than today - and the continental shelves that are now submerged were exposed land. Randall identifies those coastal zones as the optimum location for ancient communities. Access to marine resources and terrestrial resources simultaneously made the coastlines of the ice age world the most productive and habitable environments available. If advanced communities existed in the late Pleistocene, that is almost certainly where they were concentrated. The problem is what happened next. A 400 foot rise in sea level put those coastlines under 400 feet of water - permanently. Any coastal civilization that survived the climatic transition faced an additional and more immediate threat. Ocean impacts are statistically nearly three times more likely than land impacts, and an object striking the ocean generates tsunamis that can reach hundreds of feet in height when they make landfall. Without early warning technology, Randall states plainly - you are toast. The combination of catastrophic sea level rise and the tsunami threat from ocean impacts created conditions that would have systematically destroyed the most densely populated and resource-rich zones of the ancient world, leaving almost nothing for future archaeologists to find. Elon Musk explains how Starlink works? "I think there's... several 1000 satellites in low Earth orbit, and they're moving around 25 times the speed of sound in these zipping around the Earth, basically. And they're at an altitude of about 550 kilometers, which is called generally low earth orbit, because they're at low Earth orbit. Their latency is low because the distances is not that far, compared to Geo stationary satellite, 36,000 kilometers. So you've got 1000s of satellites providing low latency, high speed internet throughout the world, and they are interconnected as well. So there are laser links between the satellites. So it forms sort of a laser mesh, so that if, let's say if cables are damaged or cut, like fiber cables, the satellites can communicate between each other and provide connectivity. For example, when the Red Sea cables were cut, I think a few months ago, the Starlink satellite network, continued to function."show more

Tuesday, July 28, 2026 6:15 AM PDT/ 9:15 AM... EDT: This beautifully displayed water vapor satellite shows hurricane Genevieve as a powerful category four storm now starting to be connected with the monsoonal flow as it moves into a westward trajectory with thunderstorms over Phoenix, Arizona this morning. She will bring lots of humidity across Southern California, and high heat will continue. Still, she is not having a direct impact on Southern California or Arizona. Still, she is having a strong peripheral effect, with dangerous rip tides from Pismo Beach to San Diego counties, starting Tuesday at 8 PM through Thursday at 7 PM, and moderate south swells of 5 to 8 feet are projected from Santa Barbara to San Diego coastal zones, so be aware of this if you are going swimming this week. The cause is due to the strong El Niño in tandem with the very warm sea surface temperatures of 86° to 92° currently. These tropical conditions will continue to increase across Arizona, Southern California, and Las Vegas in the next 72 hours. The current positioning of the 594 DM high axis over eastern Kansas and northern Oklahoma will continue move Westward over the course of the week building to possibly a 597 DM to 600 DM over western Utah to Bartsow, California bringing the highest heat of the last three week period to Southern California were many valley and major city communities across Central California and Southern California will be between 107° to 119° in addition to unusually high humidity levels of 55% to 60%. will make the heatwave downright potentially dangerous. PHILIPPINE COAST GUARD CONFIRMS EXTENSIVE MARINE ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE IN... AREAS FREQUENTED BY CHINESE MARITIME MILITIA The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) fully supports and confirms the report released by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Western Command (WESCOM), exposing the severe damage inflicted upon the marine environment and coral reef in the seabed of Rozul Reef and Escoda Shoal. From 09 August 2023 to 11 September 2023, PCG monitored an average presence of approximately Thirty-three (33) CMM vessels at vicinity Rozul Reef and Fifteen (15) CMM vessels in Escoda Shoal. Maritime patrols carried out during the same period by BRP SINDANGAN (MRRV 4407) and BRP CABRA (MRRV 4409) further validated the presence of these CMMs in these West Philippine Sea features. During the same period the PCG launched missions to conduct extensive underwater surveys of the seabed in both Rozul Reef and Escoda Shoal. The results of these surveys showed that the marine ecosystem in the subject WPS features appeared lifeless, with minimal to no signs of life. Moreover, the surveys conducted in Escoda Shoal revealed visible discoloration of its seabed, strongly indicating that deliberate activities may have been undertaken to modify the natural topography of its underwater terrain. The presence of crushed corals strongly suggests a potential act of dumping, possibly involving the same dead corals that were previously processed and cleaned before being returned to the seabed. The continued swarming for an indiscriminate illegal and destructive fishing activities of the Chinese Maritime Militia in Rozul Reef and Escoda Shoal may have directly caused the degradation and destruction of the marine environment in the WPS features. The PCG emphasizes the importance of protecting and preserving our marine environment, which plays a crucial role in sustaining marine life and supporting local communities.show more

USS Abraham Lincoln has arrived at Thailand’s Laem Chabang... Port after reportedly spending 286 days at sea, including an extended deployment during US naval operations involving Iran. Videos show visible rust and corrosion across parts of the carrier. That doesn’t necessarily mean the ship is failing. Constant exposure to saltwater and humidity accelerates corrosion, which is why navies rely on protective coatings, corrosion-control systems and continuous maintenance to protect their ships. On an aircraft carrier, that challenge is enormous. From the hull and flight deck to exposed machinery and thousands of components, everything faces the harsh marine environment. The rust is less a sign of sudden failure and more a reminder of how unforgiving the ocean can be. #USSAbrahamLincoln #usnavy #thailand #aircraftcarrier #iran #IranWarshow more

Monday, July 27, 2026, 5:33 AM PDT/ 8:33 AM... EDT: Hurricane Genevieve has become the most powerful storm on Earth, currently with sustained winds of 160 miles per hour. It is currently located 545 miles south of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, and is moving west-northwest at 13 miles an hour with this latest update. This eastern Pacific hurricane season, many months ago, was warned as a harbinger for major concern due to the strong progressive intensification, strong El Niño, and ongoing marine heat wave, which is a prime example of how the weather conditions were ready for a sudden rapid intensification process from a mere tropical storm to an unforgiving category five in less than 24 hours. Current sea surface temperatures range from 86°F to 94°F for optimal strength and little to no shearing in the mid levels and upper levels of the atmosphere to let the storm continue to plow through the eastern Pacific like an ox. #CAwx #AZwx #Genevieve #Cabo #ElNiñoshow more

SpaceX has introduced a new Space Safety website. "SpaceX... plans to operate up to 100,000 Starlink satellites and up to 1 million Starmind AI satellites to meet the growing demand for broadband and supercompute. We will do this safely and at scale using the industry-leading space safety standards we have developed to date. Responsible operations requires being constantly cognizant of upcoming conjunctions for an operator’s satellites, and taking any necessary steps to mitigate collision risk. For Starlink, this process begins prior to launch, with proactive launch screening constraining launch T0’s to ensure that newly launched satellites don’t get deployed immediately into a high-risk conjunction. In 2026, Starlink encountered conjunctions with about 650 unique maneuvering third-party satellites, with only about half of them actually sharing ephemeris. Some operators don’t share ephemeris out of a concern that sharing upcoming maneuvers gives away proprietary information. In other circumstances, operators are willing to share data, but are unable to receive permission from the government to do so. Such policies are counterproductive, and largely only serve to create preventable collision risk between satellites. Over six months, Starlink observed ~164,000 conjunctions where time of closest approach (TCA) was within four hours after an unannounced maneuver. While not all of these conjunctions were high-risk, they represent cases where Starlink would not have sufficient information to reliably avoid the other vehicle if the other operator’s action created a high-risk conjunction. In many cases, the lack of high-accuracy post-maneuver trajectory information can cause such conjunctions to go unnoticed, giving operators a false sense of confidence and not realizing how much risk their actions are creating." Excited to announce UtilitySat, the world’s first multi-mission geostationary... satellite, that we're launching at the end of this year. This is a first of its kind. And a new product line-- providing on-demand connectivity for disaster relief, bridge capacity, and other missions. We started Astranis to build something new: small communications satellites that provide dedicated broadband capacity for our customers. At the end of this year we’re launching four more of them on a dedicated Falcon 9 rocket, with many more to come after that. That launch of four satellites includes one satellite for Peru, two satellites for in-flight connectivity, and a fourth satellite that had been previously kept under wraps. Until now. Introducing UtilitySat, the Swiss Army Knife of satellites This is a new product— the world’s first multi-mission commercial GEO satellite, capable of conducting multiple fully-operational broadband connectivity missions. And it is just the first of many. We’ll plan to launch many UtilitySats in the years to come. UtilitySat can provide connectivity on standard Ku, Ka, and Q/V bands, and has the flexibility to dial in exact frequencies using Astranis’s proprietary ultra-wideband software-defined radio. It can also relocate dozens of times around the GEO belt over its lifetime. It does this using our unique on-board dual-propulsion architecture, which includes both a chemical monopropellant system and an electric ion thruster. A new mission every year, or every month When we first began development of UtilitySat almost 2 years ago, we had many different missions in mind. UtilitySat can serve as bridge capacity for a customer that is waiting for a dedicated satellite, as an on-orbit spare, or as extra, surge capacity that can be brought in to supplement the broadband service we’re providing to one of our customers. There are acute needs as well — a natural disaster can wipe out terrestrial connectivity over a huge geographic area. One of the top priorities for first responders and during disaster relief is reliable comms on the ground. With multiple UtilitySats on orbit, Astranis can bring in extra capacity on incredibly short notice. Capacity that is compatible with existing, low-cost GEO ground terminals. In initial conversations with customers for UtilitySat, we’ve seen huge demand — these customers often want to lease the entire capacity of the satellite once they learn what UtilitySat can offer. Customers need all the capacity they can get, and new capacity that can be deployed on short notice is a huge deal and a huge departure from traditional GEO satellites. We see a future where customers will be able to call up extra capacity on demand to augment their existing capacity needs, and we’re making that future a reality. US Government applications The first UtilitySat mission will be a commercial one, but we are seeing enormous demand from both from commercial companies and from our government customers. The US Government has unique needs — Combatant Commanders need to be able to task dedicated satellites to specific AORs at a moment’s notice — and surge communications would give them a new tool in their toolbox, helping them win even in a contested environment. And more broadly speaking our military leaders have said the one priority in national security space is to add resiliency to our fleets, using larger numbers of smaller, flexible, and maneuverable satellites so we’re not dependent on just a handful of huge satellites in GEO. UtilitySat shows that Astranis can do just that. Not traditional GEO satellites UtilitySat is only possible because of Astranis’s unique technology — including our proprietary software–defined radio. The flexibility of having on-board digital signal processing allows us to build a standardized satellite design, and move a lot of what used to be done in hardware, into software. UtilitySat uses the standard Astranis MicroGEO platform, adding more frequency bands and some new software capabilities to make maximum use of the available spectrum, no matter where the satellite is on orbit. Traditional geostationary satellites are designed to sit in one orbital slot for up to 20 years, with a set of frequency bands that is hardwired in at the factory. Their single mission must be predetermined many years before they are launched. Astranis does not build traditional GEO satellites. From day one we knew there had to be a better way, and we’re doing it.show more
