I have gained experience over a long period of... time, and based on that, I am sharing this with all of you. Tigers that leave Bandhavgarh and move into territorial forests do not find safe habitat at all in the forests of Shahdol and Anuppur districts. Similarly, tigers coming out of Panna often reach the forests of Sagar and Katni, where they face a major threat to their safety. In the same way, in the Balaghat Territorial Forest Division (both northern and southern ranges) adjoining Kanha Tiger Reserve, there is absolutely no safe habitat for tigers. Nauradehi holds the tag of being the largest tiger reserve, yet tigers are not safe here either. Madhav Tiger Reserve has never been favorable for tigers from the beginning—past experiences in this park have not been good. The route that tigers use while coming from here towards Rajasthan is also unsafe for wild animals. Yes, the arrival of cheetahs has somewhat increased the movement of monitoring teams in this area automatically. We think that tigers have developed the habit of living with humans or amidst villages, but the reality is exactly the opposite, which we are completely ignoring. In the past 3 years alone, 140 tigers have fallen prey to poaching in Madhya Pradesh. And the surprising thing is that Madhya Pradesh is the only state where 380–400 tigers are present in the territorial (non-reserve) forests. “This number of tigers is more than double the total tiger population of Rajasthan.” Some of these tigers do move in and out of reserve forests or share boundaries with them, but most of them live entirely outside protected forests, without any security or monitoring. This is an extremely worrying issue. Today, tigers have completely distributed themselves across both the Vindhya and Satpura mountain ranges in Madhya Pradesh. Whatever new initiatives and innovations the state and central governments are bringing for their protection, in reality, they are either insufficient or are not being properly implemented on the ground. In the video, it is clearly visible that saliva is dripping from the tiger’s mouth and it is in a very weak condition. However, locating a tiger in dense forest especially when it is injured or sick is an extremely difficult task because during such times the tiger’s movement becomes restricted to a limited area. As for its fate, the video surfaced yesterday evening, and the Forest Department confirmed the presence of Mahavir Mail. This morning, a patrolling team found it dead. That said, we cannot blame anyone here because this is nature’s rule the strong will survive and return, while the weak will merge back into nature. The post-mortem report also cited lung infection and the inability to hunt as the cause of death. But in reality, this tiger had so much strength and courage that it could have easily ruled the Kisli zone for the next 6-7 years. Unfortunately, destiny had other plans. The northern sector of Tsavo had been scarred by decades of poaching and limited water resources, and as a result, wild elephants gave it a wide berth. Over the years, working in partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service, we helped secure Ithumba and nurtured it into a safe, sustainable habitat. Slowly but surely, the elephants returned. I’ve been testing the current v0-based implementation in a small devnet with the help of some testers who run nodes and miners with me. The DK work can be thought of as split into two parts: (1) implementing the actual protocol and (2) wiring it up and using it. The testing and development over the last month has been focused on (2). Obviously, DK is a consensus change for selecting parents. What’s not so obvious is that such a change affects DAA, coinbase, IBD, pruning and a lot more. Each of these areas is very sensitive and requires proper understanding to wire correctly. An important consideration and difference from GD is that DK does not focus on maximizing a property like blue work. So to maintain topological properties of blue work, an independent (free) GD implementation is kept running specifically for maintaining blue work. This allows us to keep using the property for topology. Coloring and blue score use the megachain induced by DK. The wiring around DK as of this posting is in a working state, but still needs to be reviewed. Next efforts will be focused on protocol specific components, particularly Tie-Breaking and incremental UMC. Attached are some captures from the internal devnet. Yellow jackets, which usually nest underground and are often... disturbed by a lawn mower or chainsaw, are one of the most dangerous and aggressive insects around. (Haven’t done an Entomology post lately so figured I’d throw one on) Why are they so dangerous? Because they can rapidly and repeatedly sting. This is a video I took of one who had attacked a katydid. As you can see, even as the yellow jacket begins to feed on the katydid, he continues to rapidly “pop” the prey with his stinger, pumping the paralyzing venom into the katydid. I count around 10 full stings of the prey. When a person is stung by a yellow jacket the first time, it releases an “alert pheromone”, which signals to most of the other colony members that danger is present. A major swarm of yellow jackets will then proceed out of the nest and attack the person (or animal). It takes around 1500 stings to kill a grown adult and 300-400 to kill a child. These numbers are achieved quickly with 100-200 yellow jackets swarming. If a person is allergic, they can go into anaphylactic shock with just one sting. I’m all about “saving the bees” because of their pollination factor…but Yellowjackets are one species of insect that I would gladly eliminate because of their danger. If you see them flying around the ground, or a tree stump or some rail road ties in the landscape, avoid them at all costs.show more
