Though this video might not look like much, it... shows something pretty remarkable. This footage, which we captured this past September on the Kabetogama Peninsula, is the first confirmed observation of lynx kittens in Voyageurs National Park (and one of only a few observations of known lynx reproduction in the Greater Voyageurs Ecosystem). Although lynx have been observed/documented in the park sporadically for several decades, there has never been evidence of kittens in the park (i.e., a breeding population of lynx). As a result, most lynx in and around Voyageurs are likely transitory individuals (predominantly males) roaming large area. From 2000 to 2004, biologists with the National Park Service made a concerted effort to study lynx in the park. They only documented the presence of one male and one female, and concluded “lynx were either transient or present at a low density”. Another study from 2007-2008 in and around Voyageurs National Park using trail cameras and snow tracking did not detect the presence of lynx. However, they noted that there were some sightings of lynx outside of the park with one unconfirmed report of a female lynx with a kitten observed to the west of the park. The researchers concluded that “even though patches of high-density snowshoe hare habitat exist in the Voyageurs National Park area, the low density of snowshoe hares at the landscape level would not support resident lynx”. Based on this research and some subsequent work, researchers with the park concluded in 2015 “it does not appear that there are currently resident lynx”. In fact, the researchers in 2012 concluded: ‘only three confirmed observations of adult lynx have occurred within the boundaries of VNP since 2001”. Obviously, studying these elusive animals in places like Voyageurs has historically been difficult because trail camera technology was not what it is today (or did not exist). However, trail cameras have provided a great tool to observe and understand lynx in places like Voyageurs. Skip forward to today: we now routinely get numerous observations of lynx each year in Voyageurs National Park as well as outside the park. Many observations are likely of the same few individuals wandering around, though, based on physical appearances, it seems we are capturing observations of more than 1 or 2 lynx. That said, in general, our trail camera data generally supports the conclusions of the Voyageurs National Park researchers. Most lynx likely are transient individuals, and certainly lynx are at low densities in and around Voyageurs. Nonetheless, this observation of a lynx with two kittens shows that lynx can reproduce in this area, though such occurrences are likely rare. One observation of reproduction is not evidence of a self-sustaining resident population but it suggests it might be possible. Anyway, this finding just highlights how our trail cameras, which are deployed to study wolves, simultaneously capture rare and valuable data on other wildlife species that have been traditionally difficult to study. Kīlauea Eruption Update — Episode 51 of Kīlauea summit... lava fountaining began at 8:30 a.m. HST today, July 15, and is ongoing. This is the 51st lava fountaining episode in the eruption that began in Kīlauea summit caldera in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park on December 23, 2024. The lava fountain from the north vent is reaching an estimated 100 feet high above the vent. According to the National Weather Service, low-level trade winds below the inversion level (about 8,000-10,000 feet above sea level) will move the lower part of the plume to the southwest and result in tephrafall in that direction (towards the District of Kaʻū). Above the inversion layer, south winds are forecast, which could push parts of the plume to the north and result in ash and Pele’s hair falling in Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park and communities adjacent to it. Fountaining episodes typically last 12 hours or less, but ash can remain in the air for longer depending on wind and weather conditions. This is a HUGE milestone for the ambitious Saving Wildcats (#SWAforLIFE) project that we've supported for many years. One wildcat born here at the zoo, called Margaret, was relocated to Scotland to help with these conservation efforts and went on to have several kittens of her own. I have gained experience over a long period of... time, and based on that, I am sharing this with all of you. Tigers that leave Bandhavgarh and move into territorial forests do not find safe habitat at all in the forests of Shahdol and Anuppur districts. Similarly, tigers coming out of Panna often reach the forests of Sagar and Katni, where they face a major threat to their safety. In the same way, in the Balaghat Territorial Forest Division (both northern and southern ranges) adjoining Kanha Tiger Reserve, there is absolutely no safe habitat for tigers. Nauradehi holds the tag of being the largest tiger reserve, yet tigers are not safe here either. Madhav Tiger Reserve has never been favorable for tigers from the beginning—past experiences in this park have not been good. The route that tigers use while coming from here towards Rajasthan is also unsafe for wild animals. Yes, the arrival of cheetahs has somewhat increased the movement of monitoring teams in this area automatically. We think that tigers have developed the habit of living with humans or amidst villages, but the reality is exactly the opposite, which we are completely ignoring. In the past 3 years alone, 140 tigers have fallen prey to poaching in Madhya Pradesh. And the surprising thing is that Madhya Pradesh is the only state where 380–400 tigers are present in the territorial (non-reserve) forests. “This number of tigers is more than double the total tiger population of Rajasthan.” Some of these tigers do move in and out of reserve forests or share boundaries with them, but most of them live entirely outside protected forests, without any security or monitoring. This is an extremely worrying issue. Today, tigers have completely distributed themselves across both the Vindhya and Satpura mountain ranges in Madhya Pradesh. Whatever new initiatives and innovations the state and central governments are bringing for their protection, in reality, they are either insufficient or are not being properly implemented on the ground. If nature has blessed the earth with such a beautiful and powerful creature, then it is the duty of every individual to protect it. This eruption is taking place within Kīlauea summit caldera in Hawai‘i Volcanoes National Park. Precursory lava flows began from the south vent at 2:57 a.m. this morning, May 14, and continued intermittently today from both the north and south vents. Both vents are currently erupting, with low-level activity in the south vent while lava fountains at the north vent are currently about 65 feet (20 meters) high. National Weather Service forecasts low-level tradewinds today, which suggests that volcanic gas emissions and volcanic material may be distributed southwest of Halemaʻumaʻu. Every morning, the Nursery herd heads out to explore... Nairobi National Park. They begin their adventures in the forest abutting the orphanage, which is dotted with open glades and babbling brooks. During the rains, the latter swell and overflow creating endless muddy puddles, which for young elephants like Olomunyak are mini patches of paradise. SANParks has launched an investigation to trace and identify... a man seen in viral social media footage allegedly engaging in dangerous and unlawful driving inside the Kruger National Park. They described the incident as deeply concerning and condemned the driver’s actions as reckless, irresponsible and a serious violation of conservation laws. According to SANParks, the footage shows the individual illegally crossing rivers with a vehicle, driving on roads that had officially been closed, and operating the vehicle recklessly within the protected area. Authorities said the conduct displayed a blatant disregard for public safety, environmental protection measures, conservation regulations and the authority of park management. SANParks stressed that national parks are protected under strict environmental legislation, including the National Environmental Management Act (NEMA) and the National Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act (NEMPAA). These laws prohibit activities that could damage ecosystems, threaten biodiversity, endanger wildlife or compromise visitor safety. The organisation warned that violations could result in criminal charges, substantial fines, imprisonment, civil claims for damages and administrative sanctions. The agency highlighted that driving through rivers and ignoring road closures can severely damage sensitive ecosystems and infrastructure, while also putting both humans and animals at risk. Road closures in the park are often implemented for critical safety reasons, including flooding, poor road conditions and wildlife movement. SANParks confirmed that officials are actively working to identify the suspect and warned that once located, he could face the full might of the law, including fines and a possible ban from all SANParks-managed protected areas. SANParks said, “We are looking for this individual, and he will face the music.” The organisation also confirmed that gate officials allegedly seen in the video encouraging or supporting the conduct will face consequences for violating park regulations and staff conduct rules. Eruptive activity at the summit of Kīlauea volcano on... the Island of Hawaiʻi remains paused as of December 2. However, USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory geologists on a monitoring overflight this morning observed a spattering lava surface deep in both the north and south vents in Halemaʻumaʻu crater. Glow was visible in both vents in webcam imagery last night, as well as weak spattering within the north vent. Based on patterns of ground inflation since the end of episode 37 on November 25, models show that another lava fountaining episode is likely between December 5 and 9. This eruptive activity is confined to the summit of Kīlauea volcano, within Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park. #Kilauea #lavashow more

There’s a turf war in San Francisco. Fighting for... territory? Chihuahuas and labs. These are the two most common dog breeds found in the city, according to detailed data obtained by the Chronicle from San Francisco Animal Care and Control on every dog registered since 2020, a total of 50,000 pups. But depending on which neighborhood you are in, you are much more likely to see one or the other. There are also a few pockets of the city where other dogs dominate. While there’s more than enough data to give us a strong sense of the city’s dog scene, the dataset doesn’t represent every canine in San Francisco. Animal Care and Control estimated in 2018 that the dog population was between 120,000 and 150,000. The department said that not all dogs are licensed because people might not be aware of the law requiring it or don’t want to pay the fee, and there are only 11 officers who patrol the city to look for unlicensed dogs. With this bounty of doggo information, we have anointed this “Dog data week,” in which we will explore a different aspect of San Francisco’s four-pawed population each day.
