UPDATE ON THE LA HELICOPTER CRASH It comes down... level and much too fast. When the engine quits, a pilot uses autorotation, letting the air keep the blades spinning so he can set it down. That takes altitude, and this helicopter was under 1,000 feet above the ground. Six days earlier, the FAA warned that an engine flange installed backwards on Airbus AS350s could cut the power going from the engine to the rotor. That bulletin covers more than 4,000 helicopters built before 2023. The NTSB says a warning siren can be heard on the station's own video seconds before the fall, and the sound is consistent with the engine stalling. NOW EVERYONE KNOWSshow more

The NTSB released the security camera video showing the... engine separating from the UPS MD-11 moments before it crashed. The docket also includes the inspection of the engines and in particular, engine two which showed a few performance blips prior to the crash but with recovery to commanded speeds. So, I don't believe there's evidence that debris were ingested into engine 2, instead the performance problems were related to the flames from the wing entering engine 2. Some of the footage appears to support this.show more

A family is cruising their small motorized boat along... the edge of a busy dock. The engine is still running when a sudden miscalculation, or maybe a quick throttle mistake, sends the boat lurching forward. It slams and wedges under the bow of a much larger yacht. Instead of shutting the motor off immediately, the kids rush to the front, trying to push the massive boat away while the engine hums behind them. Honestly, when machinery is involved, panic can make a bad situation worse in seconds. Turning off the engine, securing the boat, and reassessing would likely do more than all the pushing in the world. Sometimes, control starts with one simple action stop. In a moment like that, shouldn’t the first instinct be to cut the motor before anything else?show more

On May 10, 2022, a Cessna 172S experienced a... total loss of engine power during an instructional flight near Traverse City, Michigan. While on a visual approach to the runway, the engine lost power and could not be restarted. The flight instructor declared an emergency and executed a forced landing to a park area about 1 mile north of the runway, where the airplane struck the ground and a perimeter fence. The aircraft sustained substantial damage. No injuries were reported. Postaccident examination revealed a loose “B” nut on the fuel line between the fuel injector and fuel manifold, allowing fuel to leak and air to enter the system. The engine had been installed recently and had flown about 2.7 hours since installation. The NTSB determined the probable cause was the failure of maintenance personnel to properly torque the fuel line “B” nut, which resulted in a total loss of engine power. 📸 runthisshittshow more

Most people who owned a diesel Volvo 850 had... no idea what was under the bonnet. The engine was badged as the D5252T, a designation that sounds entirely Volvo. The engine cover says nothing to contradict that. The service history said Volvo. The dealership said Volvo. It was an Audi engine all along. The 2.5L inline-five turbodiesel or in other words TDI was designed and built by Audi, the same unit that had been fitted to the C4 Audi 100 and A6. Volvo sourced it because they needed a diesel quickly and hadn't developed their own yet. From mid-1995 to the end of 1996, every 850 diesel sold was a Volvo on the outside and an Audi underneath. 140 PS and 290 Nm. Badged entirely as Volvo's own. In 2001 Volvo replaced it with the D5, their first in-house diesel, because the Audi unit couldn't meet incoming emissions standards. The most successfully disguised engine swap in mainstream car history.show more

This is the recent hotfire test of Astra's most... powerful Rocket 4 first stage engine. The quick green flash comes from a special compound called triethylborane (TEB). It's pyrophoric - meaning it spontaneously ignites the moment it touches air. That super-hot green flame then lights the main propellants: kerosene and liquid oxygen. Once ignited, the engine unleashes a roaring orange plume and huge clouds of smoke. These ground tests prove the engine is ready for flight - checking thrust, stability, and performance before it ever leaves the pad. Credits: astraspaceshow more

Enhanced video of the moment AI171 crashed appears on... social media and gives a clearer indication that the aircraft's Ram Air Turbine was deployed shortly after take off from Ahmedabad. The new video is sharper and with better audio than the one widely circulated on the day of the accident. The RAT can clearly be heard at the beginning of the 18 second clip. Aviation experts say the deployment of the ram air turbine (RAT) on the Air India Dreamliner that crashed on June 12 is compelling evidence of a catastrophic dual engine failure. The ram air turbine (RAT) is a last-resort device designed to deploy automatically on aircraft like the Boeing 787 Dreamliner when both engines fail or there is a total loss of electrical or hydraulic power. “It’s not designed for an airplane at 400 or 500 feet to lose all power,” he says. “But it gives you the minimum needed to fly and communicate.”show more

The VR6 engine was born out of a packaging... problem. VW's engineers needed a six-cylinder that could fit transversely in a front-wheel drive Golf engine bay. Something a conventional V6 with cylinder banks spread 90 degrees could never do. The solution was a narrow-angle 15-degree configuration with a single cylinder head shared across all six cylinders, making it barely wider than a four cylinder. The MK3 Golf VR6 was the first car to receive it in the Golf family 2.8L, 174 HP, 235 Nm, 0-100 km/h in around 7 seconds, and a sound unlike anything else in a hatchback body. Not the fastest car of its era. The most characterful one in its class without question. That engine went on to power the Corrado, the Passat, and eventually the Phaeton and even some Porsche models. This example here is the GTI VR6 and the VR6 produces 201 hp, looks like a lot of fun.show more

The N47 is the most documented diesel engine failure... in BMW's modern history. For some reason the timing chain sits at the rear of the engine pressed against the bulkhead behind the transmission. BMW placed it there because they considered it a lifetime component that would never need servicing. They were wrong. The chain stretches. The tensioner loses control of it. The rattle you hear on cold start, from the rear of the engine, near the windscreen is the warning. Most owners don't recognise it. When the chain jumps on an interference engine, pistons meet valves. The repair is engine removal, gearbox separation, and full rebuild. Cost: €3,500 to €7,000. Some workshops simply replace the engine. The worst-affected production window is March 2007 to January 2009 when the engine came with a manufacturing defect. The Crankshaft Sprocket Defect or the Chain Guillotine: Because the chain wraps tightly around this sprocket, these sharp teeth acted like a saw blade under load accelerating wear dramatically. The E61 520d falls directly within it. BMW issued revised parts in 2009 and again in 2011. They never formally acknowledged the issue in UK and European markets. Verdict: Avoid pre-2009 cars entirely or just avoid the N47 entirely if you want to sleep at night.show more

We got a call to pick up this precious... baby from a location in Oyo State, the client clearly stated the car was in a pretty bad condition and that he wanted to refurbish the car for his Dad. Arrangements were made for pick up and shortly after the driver passed Ibadan, the engine was overheating, and there were oil droplets on the road from the engine, he waited for a while and allowed the engine to cool off and topped up the water in the radiator, he had not driven for 10 minutes before the engine overheated again, I contacted our client and I told him the best option was to tow the car because there was no way that car would get to Inside Òṣogbo , he said we should go ahead and he was going to cover the cost. The car arrived our workshop Doromecho Automobile Solutions Ltd. Inside Òṣogbo safely. We informed our client and gave him the update, it was indeed going to be a total and complete Overhaul and refurbishment but of course, we were up to it.show more

**Traditional Engine Order Telegraphs:** The bridge unit and the... engine-room unit are connected by two chains (or wire cables) that run through conduits over sprockets, forming a continuous loop. When the bridge officer moves the handle, it turns a sprocket that pulls the chain, which in turn turns the corresponding sprocket and pointer in the engine room. This classic system does not require electricity; it relies on a direct physical linkage, ensuring that both dials always mirror each other. Here’s a typical sequence of operations: The bridge officer grabs the handle and swings it to the command position, for example, "Half Ahead." This movement not only moves the engine-room pointer but also rings a bell or gong to alert the engineers. The engineers then adjust their own handle to match the position indicated by the bridge officer; this movement serves as an acknowledgment and rings the bell back on the bridge, confirming that the order has been received and understood. Only after this acknowledgment do the engineers work the throttle and reversing gear to carry out the order. It is common practice to first execute a full sweep of the handle, moving it all the way to one extreme and back before settling on the actual command position. This exaggerated motion serves two purposes: it rings the gong loudly and unmistakably, ensuring everyone is aware that a new order is coming, and it checks that the mechanism and chains are not stuck or slack. On some ships, this full sweep also signifies an important or urgent change (such as switching from ahead to astern), emphasizing to the crew that they need to pay attention because the situation is critical. After completing this sweep, the handle is adjusted to the desired position. This telegraph is from the Steamship Shieldhall (video credit as well). Go check her out onshow more

Details on Michigan MiG-23 Fighter Jet Crash At approximately... 4:15 PM local times a MiG-23 fighter jet lost control as the two pilots ejected during the 'Thunder over Michigan' airshow demonstration at Willow Run Airport. Details: - "The pilot and backseater successfully ejected from the aircraft before the crash," Wayne County Airport Authority stated. "While it did not appear they sustained any significant injuries, first responders transported the pair to a nearby hospital as a precaution." - The aircraft then went on to crash, as seen in the video, into vehicles at the Waverly on the Lake Apartments in Belleville. No one was inside the vehicles. - It looked as if the engine experienced a compressor backfire before it went down, which could possibly be related to a bird in the engine. - The airshow was halted due to the incident.
