A tricky LLM interview question: You're serving a reasoning model on vLLM, and it keeps running out of GPU memory on long traces. So you add KV cache compression and evict 90% of the cached tokens. VRAM usage stays as is and GPU still runs out of memory. Why? (answer below) Evicting 90% of the KV cache can free almost none of the memory it was using. This sounds counterintuitive, but it follows directly from how production servers store the cache today. The KV cache grows with every token a model generates. Each token appends its key and value vectors across every layer, and nothing is freed while generation continues. This is the dominant memory cost for reasoning models. If a 32K-token CoT caches ~32K tokens of KV vectors, a Qwen3-32B with 4-bit weights will run out-of-memory around 24K tokens on a 24GB GPU. One obvious solution is to keep the important tokens and drop the rest, since attention is sparse enough to allow it. But this does not solve the memory problem yet. The reason is paged attention, which is the memory manager behind vLLM and most production servers. Under the hood, it splits GPU memory into fixed physical blocks, each one holds the KV for about 16 tokens. This block returns to the allocator only when every slot inside it is empty. Since the eviction logic selects tokens by importance, and such tokens are scattered across blocks... ...so despite eviction, almost every block is left with at least some survivor tokens. For instance, if the logic evicts 14k of 16k tokens across 1,000 blocks, most likely every block will still have a token. This means the allocator frees almost nothing. Placing the new tokens into those freed slots is not ideal because it breaks the cache's layout. Say token 16,001 arrives, and it's placed in the slot the 40th token used to hold. The cache now reads position 38, then 16,001, then 41, so the cache is no longer in token order. Attention can still compute the right answer from that, but only if every slot now carries a separate note recording which position it actually holds. This introduces another bookkeeping cost that an in-order layout inherently avoids. So the cache is logically 90% smaller and still physically the same size. Many compression results miss this because they measure on pre-allocated contiguous tensors rather than a paged server. There's another problem. Eviction methods pick which tokens to keep by looking at the attention scores themselves (as expected). But fast attention kernels used in production, like FlashAttention, never save those scores. They compute attention in small pieces and throw the full score grid away as they go, which is also why they're fast. So the exact signal eviction methods need isn't available in memory. The workaround is to fall back to eager attention and build the full matrix, which gives up the speed FlashAttention was there to provide. NVIDIA published a method called TriAttention to solve both these problems. It never needs attention scores. Instead, it scores tokens from the geometry of the model's key and query vectors before RoPE is applied, where those vectors sit in stable clusters. For the memory problem, it runs a compaction pass every 128 decoded tokens. The surviving tokens slide forward to close the holes eviction creates, so whole blocks empty out and return to the allocator while the cache stays in token order. On long reasoning traces, the approach matches full-attention accuracy while decoding 2.5x faster and using 10.7x less KV memory. KV cache compression is a big infrastructure problem. The number that decides whether it works is the count of freed blocks, not the count of evicted tokens. The Concorde could fly London to New York in ~3.5 hours (half the time of a normal airliner). In operation from 1976 to 2003, the plane was a technical marvel and faster than the speed of sound. But it had poor business economics. Let’s start with the insane specs: ▫️Got as high as 10k miles ▫️Flew around earth in 30 hours ▫️Mach 2.04 speed (more than 2x speed of sound) ▫️Arrived in New York at earlier time than it left London (banker folk loved this) ▫️Delta wings and nose tip that could point down (so pilots could see runway, because it had to land at specific angle) Jointly run by British Airways and Air France, there were only 14 Concordes put to work (flew 50,000 total flights). What was wrong with the business model? ▫️SMALL MARKET: The thin aerodynamic design could only seat 109, so tickets were very expensive: $11k (a Boeing 747 can do >800 passengers) ▫️HUGE MAINTENANCE: Planes got so hot at the max height (110 degrees), that they expanded 30cm and sealant for fuel hardened. It took 28 hours to turnaround the plane (a normal one can do <2 hours). ▫️OUTRAGEOUS FUEL NEEDS: Each flight required 28,000 litres, for max 109 passengers. Commmercial planes needed 4x less fuel on a per passenger basis. ▫️NOISE RESTRICTIONS: Many cities wouldn’t allow the Concorde to fly because of how glass-shatteringly long it is on take-off, which limited destinations. *** Development of the Concorde — it had an “e” to placate the French — cost $2.8B and was paid for by the UK and French governments. The airlines were actually able to fly profitably for a number of years. But the economics were warped because the planes were given to them for free and the airlines didn’t have to capitalize costs. The business ultimately shuttered in 2003 following a tragic crash in 2000 and industry-wide slowdown post-9/11. Will we ever have sub-4 hour flights from London to NY again? A batch of sonic plane startups could make it happen by the end of this decade.

WHY YOU SHOULD HATE OBSESSION? HERE'S WHY. Iactually concept is good But my main issue is that almost every character is unbelievably dumb, and it completely ruined the movie for me. I understand that the main guy (Bear) is somewhat a bad person especially after the scene where he knew the real Nikki was trapped and was basically being tortured, he was still incredibly selfish cuz part of him enjoyed the attention and obsession. Fine. But some of the decisions in this movie were very very frustrating. 1. Why did he never think about using the one wish sooner? The store owner literally told him it was rare, and even after that insane phone call he still didn’t consider it. 2. Why did nobody react to her behavior during the boys night? She was acting completely unhinged and started hurting herself and everyone just moved on like nothing happened. 3. I actually liked the taped door scene, but nothing came from it. He never talks to anyone about it and it never develops 4. How did Bear not tell anyone about the memorial she made for his cat or the fact that she literally cooked it? Sarah was right there and still nothing?? 5. Why does nobody acknowledge how creepy her constant staring at Bear is? 6. Why would Bear ever agree to meet Sarah after what happened at boys night and after Nikki acknowledged that she is jealous of Sarah? That was painfully obvious. 7. After EVERYTHING that happened, Bear still refuses to properly explain things to anyone. And when he finally talks to Ian, he does the worst job imaginable. He doesn’t show proof, doesn’t explain that she killed Sarah, and somehow expects Ian to believe him. Then Ian gets the billion dollars, still doesn’t believe him, and immediately runs to the house screaming (even after Bear warned him not to) that the wish came true when bear was literally right there? How did Bear never once call the cops or a mental hospital throughout the entire movie? After everything that happened, any normal person would’ve done that immediately. It honestly would’ve been more interesting if the cops showed up and *he* ended up looking insane. In the final scene, after all that chaos, instead of calming her down and immediately getting her to make a wish, his first priority is “we need to clean up”? Another problem is that most of the twists become incredibly predictable because the characters are written so irrationally. Half the suspense disappears because you can see every bad decision coming from a mile away. The movie had so much potential, but the writing of the characters completely ruined it for me.. PEOPLE WHO HYPE SUCH MOVIES ARE DUMB. THAT'S IT.
