The WNBA has completely mismanaged its biggest star in Caitlin Clark and it’s sad to see. Caitlin Clark didn’t do it alone and there are a number of current and former players who helped pave and maintain the way, but Caitlin Clark has been the primary catalyst for the WNBA’s new media rights deal, new CBA, having to move games to bigger arenas, getting private chartered flights and so much more. Yet when she is targeted in ways on the court that aren’t about basketball, it’s brushed aside as “physicality” or “just the way we play in the W”. No. What Alyssa Thomas did to Caitlin Clark was not about basketball. What Alyssa Thomas did to Angel Reese was not about basketball. It was a cheap shot. It was dirty. It was done on purpose. And it’s hurting the WNBA as a whole. What’s also sad is that because of the mismanagement of Caitlin Clark by the WNBA as a whole, the fact that HISTORICALLY INCREDIBLE BASKETBALL IS BEING PLAYED in the WNBA and it’s not being talked about enough. Marina Mabrey tied the WNBA record for most points in a game with 53 points, 6 Rebs, 2 assists and tied the WNBA record by hitting NINE 3’s for the Toronto Tempo 🤯 Rookie Olivia Miles broke Caitlin Clark and Paige Bueckers’ WNBA record for fastest to score 300 points and have 100 assists. Clark and Bueckers did it in 19 games, so Miles did it in 18. Olivia Miles has also lead the Minnesota Lynx, without star player Napheessa Collier, to the best record in the league and #1 in every major offensive statistic. Angel Reese just became the fastest player to get 1k rebounds. There is so much greatness happening in the WNBA, and it’s being ignored because people don’t want to celebrate it when the league won’t even protect its own players from unnecessary targeted behavior. Some people don’t want to celebrate the WNBA when the league won’t protect its most marketable player that is the driving force behind its increased awareness. But I will say the quiet part out loud. The facts today still show that far too many people are making things in the WNBA about race or sexuality and not the results. Drawing a line in the sand and defending any player’s dirty play just because of the color of their skin is wrong. We shouldn’t be denying the truth of what we see and situating or views of the truth along color lines. Caitlin Clark and every WNBA player wants to compete at the highest level. They are tough and the best female basketball players in the World. They don’t want to be involved in identity politics or race wars. They just want to play basketball. Right & wrong has no color. Alyssa Thomas was wrong for what she did. Caitlin Clark is a phenom, the WNBA has been wrong at so many turns with how they have handled her and the WNBA needs to improve its officiating. Olivia Miles was the right pick for Minnesota and is the runaway Rookie of the Year right now. Marina Mabrey was the right move for the Toronto Tempo. Angel Reese was the right move for the Atlanta Dream. Don’t pick sides based on the color of a player’s skin or their sexuality. Let’s just talk basketball. What Alyssa Thomas did wasn’t about basketball, she is rightfully getting crushed for it and got suspended. But everything doesn’t have to be a race war. It shouldn’t be. Via Outta Pocket with RGIII

Back in January when Megan and I charted out the year, the dream of the Leadville 100 course record was overwhelming. But big dreams should be overwhelming. It was time to get to work. Our plan started from 3 principles: 1. I’d need to be capable of running a 13:xx 5k at altitude, or around sub-4 min mile fitness. 6-minute mile pace would need to be a jog on race day, and that all came from improving my running economy. 2. I had to get stronger to handle the unknown distance, both in terms of threshold climbing and actual muscular strength. 3. I’d have to run every step of the race, including Hope Pass. Most interestingly, none of those goals required lots of training volume. I did 8-12 hours of aerobic training most weeks with very few doubles given life constraints, usually around 60-75 miles of running and 1-2 bike rides (pulsing up and down for adaptations, with some bigger weeks and a longer down period for my accident). You don’t need to do consistent 100+ mile weeks to be good at this sport. I have been building endurance bricks for 18 years, and every brick counts. With that time, we applied 6 ideas: 1. Most weeks had a speed workout (often pacing Allie Ostrander ahead of the Olympic Trials 🔥), culminating in 12 x 400 on short rest in 63-64 seconds at altitude in June 2. I’d do threshold sessions approximately every other week, often on the uphill treadmill at 8% or 15% grade, culminating in a massive 12 x 5 minute session a few weeks before race day 3. I did uphill treadmill runs in Z2 at 20% grade all year, including for 10 min after as many aerobic runs as I could 4. I did 3-4 days of strides every single week. My strength is my speed. 5. I biked once per week in place of a run, often using Zwift races for hard sessions (A+ racing category in Zwift!) 6. Every week, I did Ultra Legs strength + squats and took a rest day, plus did heat training Big takeaway: you don’t need to do wild volume to have success in ultras. Get fast, stay fast year round, spend time in Z2, and stack some fun bricks in the context of your life. The record may have shocked the ultra world. But as Megan said, it only shocked people who haven’t been following my Strava for the last decade 🧡

You guys asked for a deeper sim and that's what 2.9 is. Submitted. Rebuilt Avatars: Player avatars completely redone. 14 hairstyles, 8 skin tones, 6 hair colors, beard options, all at higher resolution. Over 50,000 combinations across the 4,700+ players the game generates. Coach avatars got the same revamp. Player Cards: Cards rebuilt from scratch to feel like a broadcast graphic. Team-color gradient hero that pulls each program's actual colors, oversized OVR display, archetype line, headline stat strip, and tabs for stats, ratings, game logs, and bio. Coaching Systems: Biggest gameplay shift in this build. You pick an offensive scheme and a defensive scheme and they change how your team plays. 6 offensive options (Run & Gun, Motion, Pick & Roll, Princeton, Post-Centric, Balanced) and 6 defensive options (Man, 2-3, 3-2, 1-3-1, Press/Trap, Pack Line). Run & Gun teams shoot more threes and turn the ball over more. Pack Line teams give up fewer paint points but allow more open looks. Same modifiers run in live games and background sims so your scheme matters either way. Scout Cards: Tap any team and you can now see their offensive and defensive playstyle laid out in full. Real game-planning is finally possible. Facing a Press team, you can scheme around it. Facing a 2-3 zone, you can prep your shooters. Pull up an opponent before tipoff and actually know what you're up against. Recruiting Pipelines: Recruit generation now mirrors real basketball geography. Top talent clusters in real hotbeds. Class rank, position rank, and state rank show on every recruit. All-American badges flag elite prospects and State Player of the Year badges call out standouts in smaller states, but neither is an auto cheat code. An All-American is a strong prospect on paper, development still matters, and not every one pans out. State POY varies a lot by state. The real edge is taking a job in a strong pipeline state. Better states produce better players more often, and coaching in a hotbed gives you home state advantage on recruits everyone else is fighting over. Smarter Rankings + Bug Fixes: Rankings rebuilt to reflect who's actually playing the best. Quality wins matter, strength of schedule matters, bad losses hurt. Plus a long list of bug fixes from your Discord reports. If you posted a bug, it's been looked at even if I didn't reply directly. Android: Thank you for everyone who has been testing! We have finally got aversion that is ready for release and I am submitting it right now! I will keep you guys updated on when it drops❤️

[New] from a16z speedrun: The Outsider founders are winning the AI B2B race we used to say founder x market fit was everything but in this AI wave, Outsider founders who are AI native are outmaneuvering their industry veteran competitors just look at Tennr (healthcare), (finance), (logistics), Eve (legal) & Decagon (customer support)..... these are all Outsider founders w/ no prior experience in the verticals they now sell into so why is this? #1 - right now, AI technical excellency trumps industry expertise --> These founders combine AI fluency w/ exceptional problem solving skills to quickly map the inner workings of a vertical from an Outsiders perspective and how AI can automate that work --> many will bring on a "board of Insider advisors" early to help validate their approaches and leverage their rolodex #2 - new verticals w/out a scaled SaaS player are now in play --> Agentic AI products don’t just help workers become more efficient, they can take action and complete work autonomously --> Therefore companies can spend way more for these products as they don't just tap into IT budgets, they actually displace labor spend --> That means that offline verticals w/ historically small IT budgets and no vertical SaaS winners are now ripe for a venture scaled vertical AI disruptor = from food distribution to car dealerships to home services to agriculture, it will be Outsiders who will come in and automate the backoffice functions for these verticals #3 - the barriers for Outsiders to sell into the enterprise have dropped dramatically --> most companies have a tops-down mandate and dedicated budget to explore AI initiatives. They’re actively pulling new solutions into their organizations and open to experimenting with pilot partners --> for some products, where PLG and bottoms-up adoption makes sense, Outsiders can let their product and marketing strategies be their ticket into their buyer so, today, founder - market fit should be based on required skillsets to win in a space, not simply on tenure & domain expertise in a vertical here at speedrun we’ve invested in teams of exceptional Outsiders such as Artifact AI (accounting), Anchr (food distribution), Bead (SOX compliance) + many more if you’re a team of Outsiders primed to disrupt a boring business, head to sr [dot] a16z [dot] com to apply for speedrun
