🏗️ A major engineering milestone for Mumbai Metro Line 2B! MMRDA has successfully lifted and installed the first 70-tonne back-span pier segment of the Bandra Railway Over Bridge, marking the start of steel superstructure work on one of Mumbai’s most challenging cable-stayed bridges. The 200-metre bridge is being built across the Western Express Highway and Western Railway corridor near Bandra Railway Station — one of Mumbai’s busiest and most complex transport environments. The cable-stayed structure comprises: 🔹 A 104-metre main span, supported by back spans of 43 metres and 53 metres 🔹 49 composite steel segments, including 24 across the back spans and 25 across the main span 🔹 Two 20.1-metre-high pylons, with four of six casting lifts already completed at both locations 🔹 The entire substructure completed, including foundations and piers With the first 70-tonne segment successfully installed, work can now move ahead on the next stage of the steel superstructure. What makes this feat even more significant is where it is being built: across a live railway corridor and one of Mumbai’s busiest highways, with rail and road traffic continuing uninterrupted. Mumbai Moves Forward! The final link of the Santacruz–Chembur Link Road is now open, completing the integrated 10.30-km SCLR network between the Eastern Express Highway and the Western Express Highway. The 1.40-km Bharat Nagar Road (University Area)–Vakola Junction Elevated Corridor, built under SCLR Extension Phase II, marks the final and critical link in a network developed progressively since the original SCLR opened. With the Phase I extensions and the completion of Phase II, the SCLR network now provides end-to-end signal-free east–west connectivity across: EEH → Chembur → Tilak Nagar → Kapadia Nagar → Kurla → Kalina → BKC → Mumbai University → Vakola → WEH The newly opened elevated corridor establishes seamless two-way connectivity between BKC and the WEH. Traffic from BKC will merge directly with the SCLR cable-stayed bridge, while traffic from the WEH will move from the existing Vakola Flyover onto the new elevated corridor. The completed network will help motorists bypass Kalina, Vakola and Kalanagar, with travel time expected to reduce by approximately 35 minutes on key journeys. 🚇 Major Milestone for Metro Line 2B: 252 MT Span Lifted Over Central Railway Tracks in Just Two Hours Between 1 AM and 3 AM on June 14, MMRDA successfully completed the launch of the first composite steel span over the Central Railway corridor between Kurla and Vidyavihar stations on the CSMT–Panvel section. The 54.25-metre-long span, comprising four composite steel girders weighing a massive 252 metric tonnes, was erected within a tight two-hour railway block through meticulous planning and close coordination with Central Railway authorities. The operation involved tandem lifting using two 500 MT hydraulic cranes, backed by a standby crane, and was executed under stringent safety and quality protocols by a dedicated team of 30 engineers and technical staff, along with 100 skilled and unskilled personnel. All statutory approvals and block permissions were secured in advance. From precision fabrication and rigorous quality checks to flawless on-site execution, this achievement reflects MMRDA's commitment to engineering excellence, precision and safety in delivering world-class infrastructure for Mumbai. Major Project Update: Thane Coastal Road hits fast forward In just eight months since construction began, Thane Coastal Road-1 has crossed a major milestone, with over 50% of the foundation work for the elevated viaduct now complete and pier cap and I-girder erection progressing rapidly. 👉 The 13.45 km, six-lane, access-controlled greenfield corridor is being built using cutting-edge engineering. For the first time in India, a greenfield road project is using a single-pile, single-pier system with monopile foundations on land. 👉 Designed as a strategic freight corridor, the project will decongest Ghodbunder Road and improve connectivity between NH-160 (Mumbai–Nashik Highway) and Gaimukh along the Thane Creek coastline, with major stretches on viaducts and bridges to safeguard the sensitive mangrove ecosystem. 👉 At Gaimukh, the road will directly connect with the upcoming Gaimukh–Fountain Hotel Tunnel, enabling seamless Thane–Bhayander connectivity. Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA, along with Addl. MC - 1, Vikram Kumar, IAS, conducted a site inspection at the BKC-Vakola connector of Phase 2 of the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road. He reviewed the ongoing works and gave instructions to contractors, agencies and concerned officials to expedite the work and also maintain safety and quality of construction. The SCLR Phase 2 is nearing completion with 98% physical work already completed. This is the final phase of the SCLR project. MC - 1, Vikram Kumar, IAS, conducted a site inspection at the BKC-Vakola connector of Phase 2 of the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road. A historic chapter in Mumbai’s underground connectivity. TBM-2 ‘Arjuna’ has launched from the Thane side to begin excavation of the second tunnel of the Thane–Borivali Twin Tunnel Project, taking India’s longest and deepest urban road tunnel project another major step forward. MMRDA’s vision of transforming Thane into a major mobility-led economic hub has crossed another crucial milestone, with pile foundation and pier construction work for the creek portion of the Gaimukh–Payegaon Bridge nearing completion. As per the latest update, piling work along the Thane Creek portion is now over 95% complete. Pier erection and pier-cap construction are also progressing rapidly, while work has advanced at both the Gaimukh and Paye–Payegaon ends of the project Overall, around 25% of the project has now been completed. The 6.5-km creek bridge is a key link in the multimodal mobility network being developed by MMRDA to transform connectivity across Thane and the wider region. The network brings together multiple road, metro rail and tunnel projects, planned as part of an integrated approach to regional mobility. The bridge will connect Gaimukh on Ghodbunder Road with Chinchoti and Payegaon, creating a more direct connection to Bhiwandi, Vasai and the northern parts of the MMR. Ghodbunder Road is already one of Thane’s busiest transport corridors, carrying traffic between the city, Mumbai’s western suburbs, Mira-Bhayandar and the Mumbai–Ahmedabad Highway. At present, commuters travelling from Thane towards Chinchoti, Payegaon or Vasai have to cross the ghat section at Ghodbunder, where traffic is further affected by the movement of heavy vehicles. The creek bridge will allow this ghat section to be bypassed completely, creating a faster and more direct route for commuters and freight movement. Mahalaxmi to Get India's First Travellator-Equipped Skywalk Linking Monorail, Metro 3 and Suburban Railway MMRDA has completed approximately 90% of the Mahalaxmi Multimodal Connectivity Project, a landmark initiative that will seamlessly connect Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk Monorail Station, Metro Line 3 and Mahalaxmi Suburban Railway Station through India's first travellator-equipped skywalk, making travel across Mumbai faster, safer and more convenient. Once operational, the integrated interchange will reduce transfer time by approximately 20 minutes, improve access to the Mumbai Monorail from South Mumbai and Worli, and encourage greater use of public transport through seamless multimodal connectivity. Project Highlights: • Approximately 283-metre-long integrated pedestrian bridge • 11-metre-wide structure for smooth passenger movement • Six travellators with a combined length of 176 metres • Two passenger lifts for universal accessibility • Capacity to accommodate approximately 4,500 passengers every hour Built in one of Mumbai's most utility-congested corridors, the project reflects MMRDA's engineering expertise. A 1,800 mm diameter storm water drain was safely relocated before foundation works began, while adjacent water supply and sewer pipelines remained undisturbed, ensuring uninterrupted civic services throughout construction. A huge mobility leap for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. India’s largest and longest urban road tunnel, the Thane–Borivali Twin Tunnel Project, has just crossed a historic milestone. MMRDA has successfully completed the Thane-side portal excavation and lowered the 13.34-metre single-shield Tunnel Boring Machine cutterhead, the largest ever deployed in India for an urban infrastructure project. This milestone signals the start of the actual tunnelling phase of this pathbreaking project. The 11.8-kilometre underground twin tunnel will seamlessly connect Thane’s Ghodbunder Road with the Western Express Highway in Borivali, cutting travel time from 60–90 minutes to just 15 minutes, and redefining how lakhs of Mumbaikars move. Passing beneath the eco-sensitive Sanjay Gandhi National Park, the tunnels are being built using the most advanced TBM technology to ensure safe, efficient and eco-friendly construction with minimal ground disturbance. Each tunnel will feature three lanes, including a dedicated emergency lane, with cross-passages every 300 metres. A huge mobility leap for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. India’s largest and longest urban road tunnel, the Thane–Borivali Twin Tunnel Project, has just crossed a historic milestone. MMRDA has successfully completed the Thane-side portal excavation and lowered the 13.34-metre single-shield Tunnel Boring Machine cutterhead, the largest ever deployed in India for an urban infrastructure project. This milestone signals the start of the actual tunnelling phase of this pathbreaking project. The 11.8-kilometre underground twin tunnel will seamlessly connect Thane’s Ghodbunder Road with the Western Express Highway in Borivali, cutting travel time from 60–90 minutes to just 15 minutes, and redefining how lakhs of Mumbaikars move. Passing beneath the eco-sensitive Sanjay Gandhi National Park, the tunnels are being built using the most advanced TBM technology to ensure safe, efficient and eco-friendly construction with minimal ground disturbance. Each tunnel will feature three lanes, including a dedicated emergency lane, with cross-passages every 300 metres. The tunnels will be equipped with advanced ventilation systems, modern firefighting equipment, smoke detectors and illuminated LED signboards. Once completed, this landmark project will drastically reduce travel time, ease congestion, lower emissions and deliver a faster, cleaner and smarter commute for citizens. The successful lowering of the TBM cutterhead is not just an engineering achievement. It is proof that Mumbai is ready to take on the most complex underground mobility challenges, head-on. A 120-km coastal corridor that will transform how Mumbai moves. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region is set for its biggest mobility leap yet — a high-speed coastal corridor that will supercharge the region’s growth. The Government of Maharashtra has cleared the Uttan–Virar Sea Link and its extension to Vadhavan Port, unlocking a 120-km, fully access-controlled coastal expressway that will connect South Mumbai to Vasai, Virar, Palghar and India’s upcoming largest deep-sea port. The Mumbai–Vadhavan Expressway Corridor (MVEC) will not only bring Mumbai closer to its far suburbs, but also serve as a new gateway to India’s growth, integrating major expressways, coastal roads and future national corridors into one seamless, high-speed network for people, freight and industry. At its core is the 24.35 km Uttan–Virar Sea Link, set to become India’s longest sea bridge. With 30+ km of connectors, 6 lanes, emergency lanes, navigational spans and a full Intelligent Transport System, this sea link is designed for speed, safety and smart mobility. Once completed, MVEC will: ✔️ ease congestion on WEH, SV Road and Link Road ✔️cut travel time across the region ✔️ reduce emissions ✔️boost affordable housing, tourism and port-led development ✔️ and create thousands of jobs It will also unlock land along the Uttan–Bhayandar, Vasai and Virar belt, opening new avenues of growth for local communities.
