🚇 Major Milestone for Metro Line 2B: 252 MT Span Lifted Over Central Railway Tracks in Just Two Hours Between 1 AM and 3 AM on June 14, MMRDA successfully completed the launch of the first composite steel span over the Central Railway corridor between Kurla and Vidyavihar stations on the CSMT–Panvel section. The 54.25-metre-long span, comprising four composite steel girders weighing a massive 252 metric tonnes, was erected within a tight two-hour railway block through meticulous planning and close coordination with Central Railway authorities. The operation involved tandem lifting using two 500 MT hydraulic cranes, backed by a standby crane, and was executed under stringent safety and quality protocols by a dedicated team of 30 engineers and technical staff, along with 100 skilled and unskilled personnel. All statutory approvals and block permissions were secured in advance. From precision fabrication and rigorous quality checks to flawless on-site execution, this achievement reflects MMRDA's commitment to engineering excellence, precision and safety in delivering world-class infrastructure for Mumbai. Big milestone for Mumbai’s Underground Mobility Project: Orange Gate–Marine Drive Tunnel Begins Main Drive The Orange Gate–Marine Drive Road Tunnel, one of India’s most complex urban road tunnelling projects, has reached another historic milestone with the main tunnelling drive now officially underway. This is a pivotal moment for Mumbai’s underground mobility network. Purpose-built for Mumbai’s challenging coastal geology, the Tunnel Boring Machine — India’s largest slurry shield TBM for an urban road tunnel — achieved a crucial breakthrough recently, and has since advanced rapidly, excavating an impressive 70 metres within a few days. Hon’ble Chief Minister Shri Devendra Fadnavis and Hon’ble Deputy Chief Minister & MMRDA Chairman Shri Eknath Shinde had launched the TBM on December 3, 2025. The project involves the construction of twin tunnels spanning over 7 km. The first tunnel, currently under construction, extends 3.45 km, reaching depths of up to 52 metres, while passing beneath the Central and Western Railway corridors and Mumbai Metro Line 3 with exceptional safety and engineering precision. Once complete, the project will reduce travel time between Orange Gate and Marine Drive to just 5 minutes, enabling seamless East-West connectivity, direct integration with the Coastal Road and Atal Setu, and significantly reducing congestion, fuel consumption and emissions. Following the launch, the project has achieved several key milestones, including the lowering of the backup system unit of the TBM and connecting it to the TBM shield, before successful completion of the initial tunnelling drive. It has now commenced the main drive operations. 🏗️ A major engineering milestone for Mumbai Metro Line 2B! MMRDA has successfully lifted and installed the first 70-tonne back-span pier segment of the Bandra Railway Over Bridge, marking the start of steel superstructure work on one of Mumbai’s most challenging cable-stayed bridges. The 200-metre bridge is being built across the Western Express Highway and Western Railway corridor near Bandra Railway Station — one of Mumbai’s busiest and most complex transport environments. The cable-stayed structure comprises: 🔹 A 104-metre main span, supported by back spans of 43 metres and 53 metres 🔹 49 composite steel segments, including 24 across the back spans and 25 across the main span 🔹 Two 20.1-metre-high pylons, with four of six casting lifts already completed at both locations 🔹 The entire substructure completed, including foundations and piers With the first 70-tonne segment successfully installed, work can now move ahead on the next stage of the steel superstructure. What makes this feat even more significant is where it is being built: across a live railway corridor and one of Mumbai’s busiest highways, with rail and road traffic continuing uninterrupted. VIDEO | Kolkata: Reacting to the Murshidabad railway crossing accident, TMC leader Mahua Moitra says, "An incident took place today in Govindapur, Murshidabad, where the railway gate was not lowered when a school van carrying five children was crossing. The children have died. It is a very sad incident. The Railway Ministry must clamp down on this system because anything that depends on human intervention, where a person is responsible for closing a gate, is prone to human error. It is high time we moved to a fully automated system, and I would urge the Railway Minister to treat this as a top priority. Unfortunately, safety issues in India continue to receive very low priority. Even in 2026, we are witnessing deaths like these, where a vehicle crosses a railway track and children lose their lives. We have also seen the KAVACH system. It is supposed to cover the entire railway network, but that has still not happened. While a high-speed railway line worth Rs 1.30 lakh crore has been built between Mumbai and Ahmedabad, the cost of covering the entire Indian Railways network with KAVACH is around Rs 63,000 crore. Yet that has not been completed. We have no objection to high-speed railways, but we believe the Railways' priority should be safety measures, both on the tracks and in situations like this."

Mahalaxmi to Get India's First Travellator-Equipped Skywalk Linking Monorail, Metro 3 and Suburban Railway MMRDA has completed approximately 90% of the Mahalaxmi Multimodal Connectivity Project, a landmark initiative that will seamlessly connect Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk Monorail Station, Metro Line 3 and Mahalaxmi Suburban Railway Station through India's first travellator-equipped skywalk, making travel across Mumbai faster, safer and more convenient. Once operational, the integrated interchange will reduce transfer time by approximately 20 minutes, improve access to the Mumbai Monorail from South Mumbai and Worli, and encourage greater use of public transport through seamless multimodal connectivity. Project Highlights: • Approximately 283-metre-long integrated pedestrian bridge • 11-metre-wide structure for smooth passenger movement • Six travellators with a combined length of 176 metres • Two passenger lifts for universal accessibility • Capacity to accommodate approximately 4,500 passengers every hour Built in one of Mumbai's most utility-congested corridors, the project reflects MMRDA's engineering expertise. Seriously, what a sour grape. I've spent the summer in Djibouti, and my observations and conversations with locals contradict everything you've said. While in Djibouti, I stopped at Ali Sabieh station, a minor station along the Addis Ababa-Djibouti railway that serves as a flagship project of China's Belt and Road Initiative and links landlocked Ethiopia with coastal Djibouti. It is Africa's first electrified trans-boundary railway. (Video 1, Picture 2) Manager of the Ali Sabieh passenger station, 32-year-old Souleiman Youssouf Ahmed, told me that the railway has greatly improved the safety and convenience of travel between Djibouti and Ethiopia. (Picture 3) According to Souleiman, Djiboutians flock to the Ethiopian city of Dire Dawa throughout the summer to escape the stifling heat. Minibuses were the only option from Dire Dawa to Ali Sabieh before the railway construction. While only designed to hold ten people, the minibus was frequently crammed with twenty. The minibus shared the road with the freight trucks; accidents were common. "The train cuts travel time by two hours while also providing passengers with the added bonuses of comfort and security. At its peak in the summer, the train has carried as many as 950 passengers in a single day," said Souleiman. Fatouma Houssein Daher, a Djiboutian girl who frequently takes the train to Ethiopia, expressed her appreciation for the railway, saying that it represents the friendship between China and Africa. "Taking the train to Ethiopia is a low-cost and comfortable option. It's lovely that the Chinese have helped us create our railway," she said. She added that she didn't understand why Western nations consistently disparage the railway that has made life easier for Djiboutians. Since it was put into operation in January 2018, the railway has seen 1,824 passenger trains pass through carrying nearly 530,900 people and 6,133 cargo trains with about 7,328,500 tonnes of goods. It has also cut the transportation time for goods from more than three days to less than 20 hours and reduced the cost by at least one third, substantially facilitating imports and exports from Ethiopia, a landlocked country in the Horn of Africa. A huge mobility leap for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. India’s largest and longest urban road tunnel, the Thane–Borivali Twin Tunnel Project, has just crossed a historic milestone. MMRDA has successfully completed the Thane-side portal excavation and lowered the 13.34-metre single-shield Tunnel Boring Machine cutterhead, the largest ever deployed in India for an urban infrastructure project. This milestone signals the start of the actual tunnelling phase of this pathbreaking project. The 11.8-kilometre underground twin tunnel will seamlessly connect Thane’s Ghodbunder Road with the Western Express Highway in Borivali, cutting travel time from 60–90 minutes to just 15 minutes, and redefining how lakhs of Mumbaikars move. Passing beneath the eco-sensitive Sanjay Gandhi National Park, the tunnels are being built using the most advanced TBM technology to ensure safe, efficient and eco-friendly construction with minimal ground disturbance. Each tunnel will feature three lanes, including a dedicated emergency lane, with cross-passages every 300 metres. A huge mobility leap for the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. India’s largest and longest urban road tunnel, the Thane–Borivali Twin Tunnel Project, has just crossed a historic milestone. MMRDA has successfully completed the Thane-side portal excavation and lowered the 13.34-metre single-shield Tunnel Boring Machine cutterhead, the largest ever deployed in India for an urban infrastructure project. This milestone signals the start of the actual tunnelling phase of this pathbreaking project. The 11.8-kilometre underground twin tunnel will seamlessly connect Thane’s Ghodbunder Road with the Western Express Highway in Borivali, cutting travel time from 60–90 minutes to just 15 minutes, and redefining how lakhs of Mumbaikars move. Passing beneath the eco-sensitive Sanjay Gandhi National Park, the tunnels are being built using the most advanced TBM technology to ensure safe, efficient and eco-friendly construction with minimal ground disturbance. Each tunnel will feature three lanes, including a dedicated emergency lane, with cross-passages every 300 metres. Dr. Sanjay Mukherjee, IAS, Metropolitan Commissioner, MMRDA, along with Addl. MC - 1, Vikram Kumar, IAS, conducted a site inspection at the BKC-Vakola connector of Phase 2 of the Santacruz-Chembur Link Road. He reviewed the ongoing works and gave instructions to contractors, agencies and concerned officials to expedite the work and also maintain safety and quality of construction. The SCLR Phase 2 is nearing completion with 98% physical work already completed. This is the final phase of the SCLR project. The SCLR corridor, with its multiple arms, elevated sections and critical interchanges, now stands at the threshold of full operationalisation, marking the transition from piecemeal connectivity to a fully integrated urban mobility system. MMRDA has achieved a major construction milestone on the 13.9-km Elevated Eastern Freeway Extension (EFE), with the successful erection of the two Main Trusses of its Segment Launcher, each 59 metres long and weighing 160 tonnes, on the busy Eastern Express Highway. The entire complex operation was completed within a record 4-hour window, with the actual erection of both trusses taking just 1 hour. The operation was executed through meticulous planning, stringent safety measures and seamless coordination between MMRDA and the Mumbai Traffic Police. So, what happens next? With the Main Trusses now in place, the Segment Launcher will begin erecting 1,632 precast segments, each weighing approximately 90 MT, span by span. These will form the 25-metre-wide single-cell segment superstructure, accelerating viaduct construction and taking the project into its next major phase. And what does this mean for Mumbai? The EFE is a fully elevated, 6-lane high-speed corridor connecting Anand Nagar in Thane with Chheda Nagar in Ghatkopar, designed to create a faster, more reliable route while easing congestion on the Eastern Express Highway, one of Mumbai’s busiest transport corridors.
