The term “side effect” is a marketing term. It trains people to view adverse effects as minor inconveniences instead of recognizing them as direct effects of taking a prescribed drug. When a drug causes weight gain, sexual dysfunction, emotional numbing, or withdrawal, those are primary effects. To make true choices about whether to start or stop a psychiatric drug, we need to be able to think with straightforward, honest language. This isn’t possible when marketing departments of drug companies distort our capacity to meaningfully understand the potential adverse effects of these drugs.
