A new paper shows that AI does make your writing more homogenous—and it'll do the same even if you just ask it to edit your writing. Even weirder: it's not like it'll push you toward the voice of an average human, it'll push you toward a kind of AI-optimized... show more

LinkedIn just started hiding AI-written posts. And their system catches them 94 percent of the time. But the answer is NOT to stop using AI. They announced this in May. If your post sounds like everyone else's, it doesn't get deleted. It just stops spreading. Your followers see it. Nobody new ever does. They're even flagging the way AI writes. Sentences like "it's not this, it's that"? Flagged. But most people missed one line in that announcement: using AI to HELP you write is totally fine. You just have to make it sound like you. Here are 2 things you can do: One, give your AI your own stuff. Upload your old posts, your client results, your stories, your data, your transcripts. Now instead of pulling generic advice off the internet, it's writing from YOUR experience. In your voice. Two, write about what people care about RIGHT NOW. I check AnswerThePublic to see the exact questions my audience is typing in this week then I write about those. The more you sound like yourself and talk about real problems people face, the more people will want to hear what you have to say.

99% of people use AI chatbots wrong. The problem isn't the AI. It's the way most people are prompting it. Matt Wolfe explains exactly why your AI outputs feel average: "AI is the average of the internet. Everything you're going to get is just going to be that middle ground average." "If you steer it, give it your ideas, push it towards the smarter ideas, it's going to help uncover more of that stuff."

The danger of AI is not just the slop, but what we lose in the process. Michael Pollan explains: "We're moving into this time where we're gonna sub out writing to AI. And AI can write our papers, and professors are dealing with this everywhere now. But what is lost is a way of thinking. Writing does something to your brain. It gives you access to things you can't know just walking around or thinking or planning or outlining. If you were just transcribing what was in your head, it would be kind of onerous. But it really is what you learn in the course of a day spent writing, things you didn't know, ideas that you didn't expect. And that's the thrill of it."

Martin Casado on the AI product evolution before Grok Bot really got it right: "We've, as an industry, gone through multiple realizations for how AI enters our lives. Very early on, you add AI to a product and it's like a search bar. And then you do chat with it, and it chats back." "Then OpenClaw showed up... it'll be an extension of you, and it'll share your keys, and it'll know your passwords, and it'll just kind of do stuff that you would do." "What Grok Bot got really right is, how about it's just actually an employee?... It has its own computer, and it has its own browser, and because these are the smartest models in the world, it can do whatever an employee can do." "Now, actually, if I want something done, my first thing I think is like, 'Well, can Grok Bot do it for me?' And often the answer is yes, even if it's something you wouldn't expect." "For example, I'll have it read through my email and do triage. I don't tell it how to do that, but it will know to check with me before actually doing the triage. These things are sophisticated enough that you can give it relatively high-level tasks, and it'll do sophisticated things as a result." martin_casado

Cursor CEO Michael Truell on the future of writing code: "Our goal with Cursor is to invent a new type of programming." "It looks like a world where you have a representation of the logic of your software that does look more like English." "You can imagine kind of an evolution of programming language towards pseudocode. You have written down the logic of the software, and you can edit that at a high level." "It won't be the impenetrable millions of lines of code, it'll instead be something that's much terser and easier to understand and easier to navigate." Morgan Housel will never use AI to write. To him, it defeats the whole purpose of writing. "The process of writing is what gets the author thinking. When they write a book, they didn't have all that knowledge in their head. They started out with one brave sentence, and then that taught them something. If you're using any kind of LLM to do any of the broad structure for you, you're not actually thinking. You stripped out everything that was good about writing." He'll use it for research, as a "Google on steroids." But even then he argues that the research process is different: "When you're doing the reps of research, it's gonna hit you in a different way."

The Strait of Hormuz isn't either open or closed. It's been more like my dog going in and out of the house all day.⁣ ⁣ The danger isn't just that the door closes. It's that shippers stop trusting it'll stay open long enough to make plans. That uncertainty alone could push oil back toward $100, even before anything actually happens.

One of the best skills to install right now is my friend Peter Yang's no AI slop skill. It's an editor. It hunts for the patterns that make writing feel AI generated and strips them out, while trying to preserve your actual voice. The second part is the hard one. Most writing tools make you cleaner and sand off the interesting parts, so everyone ends up sounding the same. You already know the smell. The grammar is fine, the syntax is fine, and it still reads like a keynote from a fake SaaS conference. It writes "it's not x but it's y." It uses "quietly" a lot. Here's how I run it: 1) Install it: npx skills add, then the GitHub link. 2) Write a rough draft yourself. An outline is fine, messy is fine. 3) Get your real points down, the ones only you would make 4) Ask the skill to remove the AI patterns and keep your voice. Step 4 only works if step 2 is real. If you ask AI to write the whole thing, there's no voice left to preserve. If you're building products, you're writing constantly. Tweets, landing pages, cold emails, launch posts, product updates, onboarding copy, investor updates. Nobody replies to say "this was written by AI." They just trust you less and keep scrolling. Write the messy draft, run the skill, then post it.

ELON: AI HAS DRAINED HUMAN KNOWLEDGE DRY - NOW DRINKING FROM ITS OWN WELL "You take the entire internet, all books ever written, all the interesting videos, and you distill that down into tokens, essentially bits of information. We've now exhausted all of that; the cumulative sum of human knowledge has been exhausted in AI training. That happened last year. So the only way to supplement that is with synthetic data, where the AI creates. It'll write an essay, or it'll come up with a thesis, and then it will grade itself. It'll go through this process of self-learning with synthetic data." Source: Elon Musk, Mark Penn, January 9th 2025

Maria Popova on the soul, the self, and what AI will never have: "AI will never have feeling. AI will have the simulacrum of feeling. AI will never write the great American poem, the great French poem, because it hasn't suffered. AI doesn't have the capacity to suffer. Even if you try to make it suffer, meaning write a command that is to execute failure, it'll already be succeeding at executing failure. AI can only ever succeed. And without suffering, what kind of true art can there be? All writing that is truly moving is born of feeling and time. AI has neither; it's an instantaneous, unfeeling delivery of pure information. The function of what we call the soul is real. Whatever it's made of, where it is. And the part that I worry about is that today, most people live on the level of the self and not the level of the soul. Just the costume of personality over the soul." The value of persons does not rest on our "costume of personality," but on the soul beneath it.

I asked Sam Altman: “Will AI kill writing?” He said: “I don’t see any evidence whatsoever that AI seems to be killing writing. Let’s say we have a system that can write better than a human. Do you think the most popular novel of 2027 has a human name on it or not? When I finish a great book, the first thing I go do is I want to know more about the writer. I want to know their life story. And I don’t think I’ll ever have that feeling about AI writing. There’s something about reading an incredible book and connecting to a person. Even though you don’t literally know them, you feel like you do and you feel like you have this important shared human experience, and that’s a significant percentage of the enjoyment of a great book to me. I bet we’ll keep doing that.” Sam Altman
