Newton's 2nd Law a=F/m Same force with more mass = less acceleration which in this case = less height. Want to increase acceleration (and its byproduct jump height)? Either going to have to increase the numerator (force) or decrease the denominator (mass). That's not an opinion, it's math and science. And that math/science is on display here as you have two medballs acted upon by the same force traveling different distances due to differing mass. Now let's walk across the hall to anatomy and physiology class...yes, you need body fat. It's critical to be healthy and function. This isn't advocating for just losing weight or being "thin" or whatever. It's for optimizing body composition to where you perform at your best. With that, you need muscle mass to produce FORCE. And many younger volleyball players will benefit tremendously from an increase in muscle mass. This increase in muscle mass stands to increase force production, improve body composition, and create a net positive effect on performance (within reason we all know we're not training linebackers). But an increase in unnecessary fat mass typically has the opposite effect. Hence the statement: fat don't fly. Every athlete has an optimal body composition. Find yours through consistent strength training, adequate fueling, proper hydration and sleep and...planned recovery days.

If diabetes is the joke, what is the punchline? Gracie was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 1, not through eating too many sweets or chocolate but because her body decided to attack the cells of the pancreas. Unfortunately Easter is normally a prime time for jokes from all sorts of people linking indulgence and sweets with the condition. Jokes are often seen as harmless, however they perpetuate the stigma and misunderstanding of serious conditions, in this case diabetes. Diabetes in general is a condition where a person is unable to handle the breakdown products of carbohydrates (sugar) in a way a non-diabetic person would. This is important because the cells in our body rely on sugar to get energy, but this has to be done in a controlled way. People with diabetes have an issue with insulin specifically. There are many different types of diabetes including gestational diabetes, which is seen in pregnancy, and steroid induced diabetes, which is brought on by medications. The two most well-known types however are type 1 and type 2. What doesn’t cause diabetes is eating too much chocolate! It ranges from your genetics to viral loads and even your vitamin D levels! In 2012, diabetes in total was the direct cause of 1.5 million deaths globally. Often, it can be deadly before you’ve even released you are diabetic! What is more worrying when seeing public figures making jokes about diabetes is that there is increasing evidence of significant mental health concerns within children with type 1 diabetes with nearly 40% of type 1 diabetic children seeking assistance from mental health support teams. Gracie has completely owned her condition, playing sports and even going on TV. The idea that lifting weights will stunt a child’s growth is actually a myth that for some reason started and spread after a mid 1900s Chinese study to find out why child laborers on a mine in a remote region of China were on average signifigently shorter than their peers. The hypothesis was that it was due to carrying heavy loads out of the mines. However, the technology at the time could not confirm that as the cause, and the study was deemed inconclusive because they couldn’t tell if the cause was in fact the loads or if it was due to malnourishment due to the remote area in China, and all the time spent in the mines. Fast forward to 1999, Dr Avery Faigenbaum relooked at the issue this time studying a group of pre-pubescent children participating in resistance training vs a control group (Faigenbaum et al. 1999). Using modern technology )I believe he used MRIs) he found that the bone density was actually thicker in the trained group vs the control group, with no damage or negative impact on growth plates. Several hundred follow up studies have been done in the close to 25 years since and have all confirmed Faigenbaum’s findings. Resistance training (which includes weight training) causes bone density increases with no risk to growth plates. As such, even the American Association of Pediatrics as well as many other orgs such as National Strength & Conditioning Association and National Academy of Sports Medicine all encourage youth resistance training under qualified supervision.
