In one of the richest countries on earth, no child should go hungry while billionaires grow richer. No pensioner should be forced to skip meals. At the fourth International Summit on Food Security, we announced a shift from humanitarian assistance to mutually beneficial partnerships with African countries. Ukraine is no longer only an exporter of grain. We are ready to supply world-class food products and share our agricultural technologies, irrigation practices, and processing expertise with countries of the Global South to strengthen global food security. Despite the war, Ukrainian agricultural producers this season account for 36% of global sunflower oil exports, 38% of sunflower meal, and more than 13% of global corn exports. Our courageous farmers and producers continue their work even under the hardest conditions — shelling, mined fields, and drone attacks in frontline areas. The AGROEXPO exhibition, held as part of the summit, demonstrates that Ukrainian entrepreneurs are developing modern agricultural machinery and processing equipment even during wartime. All of this is Made in Ukraine by our engineers — and it works. I underscored the importance of continued support for humanitarian demining. More than 170,000 km² of Ukrainian territory is potentially contaminated with explosive ordnance — land that could feed tens of millions of people. Demining is therefore not only a Ukrainian priority, but a global one for food security. I thank Ukraine’s international friends who traveled to the summit. We know many guests crossed thousands of kilometers to be here. Your presence and engagement are a strong signal of unity and confidence in the power of our partnership. Norway flew its own chefs and a half-ton of food to the World Cup in America. The headlines told you it was because the team thinks American food is poison. That part is not true. Their head chef said it plainly. They brought salmon, halibut, brown cheese, and pressed their juice from local oranges, for dietary consistency and a taste of home. Not a boycott. But the story put a spotlight on something that is true and documented. The US food supply runs on thousands of additives. A lot of them were never independently tested, and a long list of them are banned or restricted in Europe. Your sandwich bread can contain azodicarbonamide, a dough conditioner that is illegal in the EU and the UK. It is in the buns, the bagels, and the fresh-baked loaves here. Some American oranges are dyed with Citrus Red 2, a petroleum dye allowed on the peel and rated a possible carcinogen. The color you read as ripe can be painted on. Red 40, Yellow 5, and Yellow 6. In Europe, foods with these dyes carry a warning that they may affect activity and attention in children. In America, no warning, no label, just brighter cereal. This is not an accident. It is the law. In Europe a chemical has to be proven safe before it goes in your food. In America it stays in your food until somebody proves it dangerous. Over 50% of the clothing worn by Africans is designed and produced outside the continent. In a region with over 1.5 billion people, the fashion industry remains dominated by external influence — foreign designs, foreign manufacturing, and foreign profit. While there’s growing pride in African fashion, much of it remains limited to high-end markets, inaccessible to the everyday consumer. The challenge isn’t creativity — Africa is rich with talent. The challenge is scale, affordability, and ownership. Unless the continent builds its own infrastructure to produce for itself — at every level — others will continue to fill the gap. China. Europe. Everyone but us. This is a call not just for more African fashion — but for an African fashion economy.
