What I do want to criticize is the constant claim from some people that they’ve already surpassed Tesla, when in reality the gap is still enormous. FSD v14 lite drives me from Los Angeles to Las Vegas with zero human intervention. No other car on the road you can buy could do this today besides a Tesla. FSD handled all 5 hours of driving including parking, unparking, and charging. I never touched the steering wheel.

Chen Zhen, one of China’s most influential automotive content creators with tens of millions of followers across multiple platforms, claimed two years ago that Tesla FSD was only about 80% as capable as XPeng’s NGP. In 2 scenarios where a tree is in the way, FSD is the only system that successfully drove around to stay the course. Every other system failed to proceed. For context, FSD is the only system that doesn’t use lidars. Looks like vision-based approach is superior and can solve edge cases which lidars may not.

FSD V14 is incredibly hyper-aware. The moment the blinker comes on, it recognizes this isn’t just a normal lane change, but a risky move to cut across for the exit. It starts braking in just 0.25 seconds. No human can match that.

A member in our chat group shared his initial experience with FSD. He just downloaded v13.2.6 after returning back to Shenzhen, China before he took several test drives with FSD engaged and accumulated over 100 km FSD mileage. He is so impressed by the flawless zero-disengagement or zero-intervention drives. He invited his friend, an Xpeng X9 owner, to test it as well. The friend uses XPeng’s latest NGP autonomous driving system all the time. Obviously he is a very savvy ADAS observer in China. After the test drive, his verdict is: FSD is “invincible”. The foundational capabilities of FSD are far better than those of other systems in China. Let that sink in.

Gary is as usual completely out of depth on this subject. For the last 10+ years we've seen automakers working with Nvidia, and we've seen the products they've come out with. They've been total garbage. While non-technical analysts like Gary continue to insist that "the competition is coming", Tesla remains the only product that I can actually buy to automate my day to day drives. Look past the marketing & hype and what investors are not being told is that there is no solution like FSD in the market. There is no competing product I can buy. FSD drives better and more smoothly than any other system, with a cost structure that is a fraction of anyone else. Tesla does more with less, and nobody else comes close. Let's stop trying to pretend this is an equal competition. We've seen Tesla's products and we've seen legacy auto's. Nvidia chips are fantastic, but it is absolutely naive to think that simply buying a car computer is enough to get you safer than human self-driving & autonomous robots.

Tesla FSD V14 truly feels like my Robotaxi experience in Austin. I drive this route often, and V13 would have some issues with merging in certain areas, V14 has corrected all of them. In certain scenarios, the car feels alive — you can feel it thinking. Love how it effortlessly finds a parking spot when arriving to my destination.

It's wild that people post videos of themselves blatantly breaking the law like this. Look, obviously, the idea of being able to do something else, like work, while driving is extremely appealing, but you just can't do it like that. Tesla FSD v14 is extremely impressive, but the best data we have right now points to a critical intervention every ~2,000 miles on average. Human drivers crash about every ~400,000 miles on average. You will hurt yourself, or God forbid, someone else, if you keep doing this, as you won't be able to intervene properly. I know some don't believe because they blindly believe Tesla's claim that "FSD is 10x safer than human drivers", but that's the most misleading claim ever. First off, the data is cherry-picked. I do believe that driving on FSD is safer than driving without, but closer to a factor 3x based on the best, not-Tesla-massaged, data. But more importantly, that's 3x safer than FSD plus human. Not just FSD. It is safer because it is supervised by a human paying attention and correcting the system when needed. If you use it like this guy, you are not safer. Period.

The crash analysis below shows AI3 FSD v12.6.4 biggest safety weakness: late reaction. This video uses official dashcam crash footage synchronized with the vehicle’s official telemetry logs obtained from Tesla and visualized in CamCutApp. The telemetry shows FSD waiting about 0.67 seconds after the lead vehicle’s brake lights illuminate before it begins braking. From the moment the lead vehicle starts braking until Automatic Emergency Braking intervenes is about 1.5 seconds. During that time, the Tesla slows by only 4 mph, from 62 mph to 58 mph. By the time AEB takes over, only 132 feet remain before impact. There simply isn’t enough distance left to avoid the collision. Millions of AI3 vehicles are still running FSD v12.x. Situations like this require the driver to intervene before it becomes obvious that FSD isn’t braking quickly and aggressively enough, and that’s not always easy to judge in real time. Tesla today announced AI3 v14 Lite which includes “significantly improved safety.” When I get a chance to evaluate v14 Lite, this is exactly what I’ll be testing first. In my opinion, it’s the most important and critical improvement the system needs.
